Risk Factors, Prognosis, Influence on the Offspring, and Genetic Architecture of Perinatal Depression Classified Based on the Depressive Symptom Trajectory.

This study is aimed at revealing the risk factors, prognosis, influence on offspring, and genetic architecture of perinatal depression (PD) classified based on the depressive symptom trajectory. Pregnant women with no history of major depressive disorder (MDD) were recruited and followed up with their offspring from 1 to 5 years postpartum. Using four self-report questionnaires in the perinatal period, PD was classified into four subtypes: pregnancy, early postpartum, late postpartum, and chronic PD. Risk factors, depressive symptom trajectory from 1 to 5 years postpartum, and child behavior p

Atopic dermatitis and its relation to food allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To present the most recent evidence on atopic dermatitis and its relation to food allergy. RECENT FINDINGS: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin characterized by impaired skin barrier because of multifactorial causes including genetic factors, immune dysregulation, and skin microbiome dysbiosis. Infants with temporary skin barrier disruption and/or persistent atopic dermatitis are particularly at risk of developing food allergy (during the so-called atopic march), with up to half of patients demonstrating positive food-specific IgE and one-third

A cohort study of the impact and acquisition of naspharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae during the Hajj.

BACKGROUND: The annual Muslim pilgrimage attracts over two million pilgrims who gather in a limited time and space. The pilgrimage carries the potential risk of increase risk of the acquisition of Streptococcus pneumonia. In this cohort study, we evaluate the effect of the Hajj on the prevalence of pneumococcal serotype nasopharyngeal carriage in the Hajj pilgrim population. The secondary objective is to evaluate the effects of the mass gathering on carriage of invasive pneumococcal serotypes. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study with two data collection periods: at the beginning and a

Effect of prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke on inhibitory control: neuroimaging results from a 25-year prospective study.

IMPORTANCE: There is accumulating evidence relating maternal smoking during pregnancy to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) without elucidating specific mechanisms. Research investigating the neurobiological underpinnings of this disorder has implicated deficits during response inhibition. Attempts to uncover the effect of prenatal exposure to nicotine on inhibitory control may thus be of high clinical importance. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the influence of maternal smoking during pregnancy (hereafter referred to as prenatal smoking) on the neural circuitry of response inhibition and

Maternal dietary intake of nitrates, nitrites and nitrosamines and selected birth defects in offspring: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Dietary intake of nitrates, nitrites, and nitrosamines can increase the endogenous formation of N-nitroso compounds in the stomach. Results from animal studies suggest that these compounds might be teratogenic. We examined the relationship between maternal dietary intake of nitrates, nitrites (including plant and animal sources as separate groups), and nitrosamines and several types of birth defects in offspring. METHODS: For this population-based case-control study, data from a 58-question food frequency questionnaire, adapted from the short Willett Food Frequency Questionnaire a

Choriophobia: a 1-act play.

The management of a newborn born to a mother with chorioamnionitis is controversial. By using data collected on neonates born in the era of routine maternal screening for Group B Streptococcus, we calculate that the risk of early-onset sepsis in a hypothetical infant born at term to a mother with chorioamnionitis, who has a normal physical examination at birth, is likely substantially <1% if the mother's screen for Group B Streptococcus was negative. This low rate of sepsis calls into question current guidelines recommending treatment of all such newborns with intravenous antibiotics for 48 ho

Posterior crossbite in the deciduous dentition period, its relation with sucking habits, irregular orofacial functions, and otolaryngological findings.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess unilateral posterior crossbite, sucking habits, orofacial functions, and otolaryngological findings in the deciduous dentition. These findings would allow us to establish a preventive program for posterior crossbite, based on interceptive treatment at an early stage of dental development. We would determine the predictive value for posterior crossbite development in correlation with the duration of sucking habits. METHODS: Data were collected on 30 children (13 boys, 17 girls) with unilateral posterior crossbite (mean age, 5.5 years; range, 3.

Haploinsufficiency of HDAC4 causes brachydactyly mental retardation syndrome, with brachydactyly type E, developmental delays, and behavioral problems.

Brachydactyly mental retardation syndrome (BDMR) is associated with a deletion involving chromosome 2q37. BDMR presents with a range of features, including intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, behavioral abnormalities, sleep disturbance, craniofacial and skeletal abnormalities (including brachydactyly type E), and autism spectrum disorder. To date, only large deletions of 2q37 have been reported, making delineation of a critical region and subsequent identification of candidate genes difficult. We present clinical and molecular analysis of six individuals with overlapping deletions
