Trends in Substance Use Disorder Among Hospitalized Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: An 11-Year Nationwide Study.

GOALS: We described the temporal trend of substance use disorder (SUD) and SUD subtypes among patients hospitalized with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), accounting for readmissions within the calendar year. BACKGROUND: One in six patients with IBD is estimated to have a concomitant SUD. SUD has had mounting morbidity and mortality rates since 2010 and has been shown to adversely affect IBD activity. STUDY: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients hospitalized at least once with IBD from 2010 through 2020 using the Nationwide Readmissions Database. Multivariable logistic regression

Socioeconomic Vulnerability as a Predictor of Burn Severity: Development of a Multidimensional Risk Model.

BACKGROUND: Burn severity assessment traditionally relies on clinical and injury-related factors. However, the influence of social determinants of health on burn outcomes remains poorly understood. We aimed to develop a multidimensional prediction model of burn severity, defined as intensive care unit (ICU) admission, incorporating both clinical and social factors. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of burn patients aged ≥ 15 years admitted to a specialized burn center in Cali-Colombia between January 2023 and December 2024. Sociodemographic, clinical, and injury-related variables were col

Prevalence of dual sensory impairment in Australia: a nationally representative population-based survey of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of co-occurring vision and hearing impairment (Dual Sensory Impairment, DSI) is expected to increase with the global ageing population. This national survey aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors for objectively measured DSI in adults. METHODS: Stratified, multi-stage random cluster sampling of 30 sites was conducted. DSI cases included persons with bilateral vision impairment (presenting distance visual acuity <6/12 in the better eye) and either, any (>25 dB hearing level, dB HL, in the unaided better ear) or moderate to worse bilateral hearing impairment

Global mammographic asymmetry and short-term breast cancer risk by breast density: a nationwide screening cohort of 5.5 million women.

Global mammographic asymmetry (GA) is generally considered benign, and its association with subsequent breast cancer risk is unclear. We examined whether GA on screening mammography predicts short-term and long-term breast cancer and whether this varies by Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) breast density. In this retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service screening programme, we included women aged ≥40 years who underwent screening mammography in 2009-2010 and had no prior breast cancer. GA and BI-RADS density were recorded on baseline mammog

Early detection of female-specific cancers using longitudinal healthcare records with a multichannel convolutional neural network.

OBJECTIVES: Female-specific cancers, including breast, ovarian, cervical and uterine malignancies, lack comprehensive early detection approaches, particularly for ovarian and endometrial cancers where effective population-level screening remains limited. This study aimed to develop and validate a computational method for early detection of female-specific cancers using longitudinal healthcare records. METHODS: We developed a multichannel convolutional neural network (MCNN) to analyse 36-month pre-diagnostic healthcare records from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. The stud

Financial Toxicity in Patients With Breast Cancer Treated at Private Medicine Institutions in Brazil.

Financial toxicity (FT) refers to the negative impact of the financial burden of cancer diagnosis and treatment on patients' well-being. With rising global costs of oncologic therapies, diagnostics, and supportive care, FT has become a key concern in cancer care, influencing adherence, quality of life, and outcomes. Breast cancer, given its high prevalence and socioeconomic implications, is notably associated with FT. Beyond direct medical expenses, patients often face income loss and out-of-pocket costs for supportive care, which can significantly affect their therapeutic trajectory. Addressi

Incidence and Predictors of Vertebral Fractures in U.S. Postmenopausal Women: A Nationwide Analysis.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Vertebral fractures are the most prevalent osteoporotic fractures worldwide and are particularly prevalent in postmenopausal women. The last major population-based study assessing the prevalence of vertebral fractures in the United States was the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (1999). Since then, studies have been limited by sample size and population generalizability. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The PearlDiver M165 database was used to obtain a randomized sample of 500,000 women over age 55. Women with a diagnosed vertebral fracture were identified via International Class

Fragility fracture site is associated with frailty in older adults: a population-based cohort study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Fragility fractures cause disability in older adults. Although frailty determines adverse outcomes, the relationship between anatomical fracture site and functional status remains unclear. Clarifying these associations may improve geriatric assessment and secondary prevention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using the Shizuoka Kokuho Database, which integrates medical and long-term care insurance claims in Japan.
