Health outcomes of neonates with osteogenesis imperfecta: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess at-birth health outcomes of neonates with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). STUDY DESIGN: A total of 53 women who self-reported having had at least one child with OI completed the survey. We evaluated pregnancy length, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) usage, at-birth complications, and the child's clinical information including OI type, height and weight. RESULTS: Information was gathered on a total of 77 children (60 type I, 4 type III and 13 type IV). Health conditions reported at birth included breech presentation (24%), prematurity (27%), fracture (18%), bone deformit

The Effect of Expressive Writing on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Hopelessness in Mothers with Premature Neonates Hospitalized in NICU.

BACKGROUND: Premature birth and hospitalization of infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can contribute to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in mothers who also experience high levels of hopelessness. It is essential that a proper strategy be used for managing these challenges. This study aims to determine the effect of Expressive Writing (EW) on PTSD and hopelessness in mothers with premature neonates who were hospitalized in NICU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This clinical trial involved 65 mothers with premature neonates admitted to an NICU in Esfahan (Iran) in 2023. Samples wer

Target product profile: aerosolized surfactant for neonatal respiratory distress.

Treatment with surfactant has been found to improve the survival rate of neonates with respiratory distress syndrome, particularly preterm infants. However, surfactant is usually administered by endotracheal intubation and generally only in level-3 neonatal intensive care units. Recent improvements in aerosolization technology have raised the possibility that aerosolized surfactant could now be given in wider range of settings, including resource-poor settings. Consequently, the World Health Organization has developed a target product profile for product developers that describes the optimal a

Birth Weight Reference Percentiles by Gestational Age for Turkish Twin Neonates.

AIMS: In clinical practice, birth weight reference percentiles for singletons are used to evaluate twin births. The utilization of singleton reference percentiles for twins is not appropriate as they experience different growth trajectories. However, Turkey still lacks such references. Our aim was to create gestational age-specific birth weight references for female and male Turkish twins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a hospital-based, multi-centered, retrospective study. In total, 2544 live-born twins between 2010 and 2019 were included in the study. Gestational age, birth weight, mode of

Algorithm for Airway Management in Patients With Pierre Robin Sequence.

PURPOSE: Airway management in neonates with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) can be challenging. The goal was to describe the algorithm developed by the authors over the past 8 years. METHODS: A retrospective case series analyzing airway management in neonates with PRS admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at a tertiary care pediatric hospital was performed. The utility of the proposed algorithm for airway management incorporating more consistent use of polysomnography (PSG), and airway assessment was assessed. RESULTS: A total of 31 neonates with PRS (12 men, 19 women) with a mean gestati

Liquid ventilation: clinical experiences.

Liquid breathing has been in the medical literature for nearly 80 years and has been proposed as a means of improving gas exchange in patients with acute respiratory failure since the 1970s. There are many potential clinical applications of perfluorochemical (PFC) liquids that span many specialties in medicine. The ability to lower surface tension directed the initial clinical focus on neonatal therapy in the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome. The first clinical trial of PFC ventilation was performed in neonates in 1989. Additional trials using LiquiVent, a medical-grade PFC liquid, w

Differential determinants of patent ductus arteriosus closure for prematurity of varying birth body weight: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) remains a critical issue in prematurity care. To predict the PDA closure early, we aimed to clarify the association of PDA closure with the initial postnatal 24-hour clinical characteristics and maternal and gestational histories of preterm neonates. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in a pediatric-neonatal-intensive-care-unit from 2008 to 2013. Data relating to birth histories, maternal histories, and clinical data from the first 24 h of life were analyzed according to three types of PDA closure-non-treated, medically-responsive, a

Maternal Oxygen Supplementation Compared With Room Air for Intrauterine Resuscitation: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Supplemental oxygen is commonly administered to pregnant women at the time of delivery to prevent fetal hypoxia and acidemia. There is mixed evidence on the utility of this practice. OBJECTIVE: To compare the association of peripartum maternal oxygen administration with room air on umbilical artery (UA) gas measures and neonatal outcomes. DATA SOURCES: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from February 18 to April 3, 2020. Search terms included labor or obstetric delivery and oxygen therapy and fetal bl

Reducing Blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in Argentina Through Collaboration, Advocacy and Policy Implementation.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a largely avoidable cause of blindness in children worldwide, requiring high-quality neonatal care, early detection and treatment. In middle-income countries throughout Latin America, Eastern Europe and South Asia, there has been a rise in ROP blindness due to a combination of increased survival of preterm infants, resource-scarce medical environments and lack of policies, training and human resources. However, Argentina is an example of country where rates of ROP blindness have declined and ROP programmes have been successfully and effectively embedded with

Mothers' perspectives on the perinatal loss of a co-twin: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing body of literature exploring the emotional impact of perinatal loss upon parents but only limited research focussing specifically on the views and experiences of parents who have experienced a loss from a twin or higher order pregnancy. We undertook a qualitative study to provide an in-depth understanding of the experiences of mothers who have had a loss from a twin pregnancy and subsequently continued visiting hospital whilst their surviving twin was cared for. METHODS: A qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews. Mothers were recruited from a Neon
