Intestinal candidiasis in a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta): an immunohistochemical study.

Post mortem examination of a juvenile loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) stranded in the Canary Islands revealed a fishing-line in the small intestine. Histologically, severe necrotic enteritis, multiple haemorrhages, and marked oedema of the intestinal submucosa were observed. Yeast cells and fungal hyphae were seen in the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa and in the connective tissue of the submucosa. Because fungal cultures were not taken at the time of necropsy, an immunohistochemical study was performed in order to identify the fungus involved. Specific monoclonal and heterolog

FOXL2 inactivation by a translocation 171 kb away: analysis of 500 kb of chromosome 3 for candidate long-range regulatory sequences.

A translocation breakpoint 171 kb 5' of the transcription start of FOXL2 causes blepharophimosis/ptosis/epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) and associated premature ovarian failure. The breakpoint falls within another gene, MRPS22, that has been sequenced in 500 kb of continuous DNA. MRPS22 encodes 20 exons and a number of alternative transcripts. Three CpG islands (>91% identical) are followed by noncoding exons 4-12 and coding exons 13-20. The 3'UTR extends into the 3'UTR of COPB2. Based on the sequence, three reported translocations that cause BPES all fall within intron 6 of MRPS22. Compar

Simultaneous diffuse sclerosis variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma and diffuse toxic hyperplasia (Graves' disease).

Diffuse sclerosis variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (DSVPTC) is an unusual malignant neoplasm that typically permeates the entire gland resulting in diffuse thyroid enlargement. In the absence of a dominant nodule, DSVPTC can be histologically deceiving because of exuberant inflammation and the scattered distribution of the microscopic tumor islands. The difficulty in diagnosing this tumor is compounded by its rarity and unusual clinical and histologic features. Herein, we describe a unique case of DSVPTC that was clinically masked by a co-existing second diffuse thyroid process--Graves'

Transcriptional silencing of zinc finger protein 185 identified by expression profiling is associated with prostate cancer progression.

We profiled the expression of genes in benign and untreated human prostate cancer tissues using oligonucleotide microarrays. We report here 50 genes with distinct expression patterns in metastatic and confined tumors (Gleason score 6 and 9; lymph node invasive and noninvasive). Validation of expression profiles of 6 genes by quantitative PCR revealed a strong inverse correlation in the expression of zinc finger protein 185 (ZNF185), bullous pemphigoid antigen gene (BPAG1), and prostate secretory protein (PSP94) with progression of prostate cancer. Treatment of prostate cancer cell lines with 5

Extraskeletal chondroma of the fallopian tube.

Extraskeletal chondroma can occur in the hands, feet, head and neck. This tumor usually presents as a small solitary nodule. The histogenesis of the tumor is controversial, but some have suggested a metaplastic origin. Chondroma of the fallopian tube is very rare. There is only one report in English literature. The origin of this tumor can be subcoelomic mesenchyme of the tubal serosa or mesenchyme of the myosalpinx. We describe a case of chondroma arising from the serosal surface of the fallopian tube with a review of literature. A 30-yr-old woman visited hospital due to left adnexal mass. On

Reverse line blot hybridization used to identify hemoprotozoa in Minorcan cattle.

Piroplasmosis, a tick-borne protozoal disease, is an important disease affecting domestic and wild animals. We performed PCR-based reverse line blot hybridization (RLB) assays on blood samples obtained from 133 cattle exposed to ticks in field conditions in Minorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) in three different seasons. The oligonucleotides used were those for Theileria annulata, T. buffeli, T. taurotragi, T. velifera, Babesia bigemina, B. bovis, B. divergens, and B. major. The RLB technique allowed the simultaneous identification of T. annulata, T. buffeli, B. bigemina, and B. bovis as the piro

Blindsight after optic nerve injury indicates functionality of spared fibers.

Some patients with lesions in the geniculostriate pathway (GSP) can respond to visual stimuli in the blind field without conscious acknowledgement. The substrate for this "blindsight" is controversial: whether it is the uninjured extrastriate pathway (EXP), which bypasses the lesion site, or residual fibers within damaged visual cortex ("islands of vision"). Using stimulus detection, localization, and spatial summation tasks, we have found blindsight in patients with damage both in the optic nerve (ON) and EXP. The prevalence and functional characteristics of their blindsight are indistinguish

Heat shock protein 27 expression in the epithelium of periapical lesions.

Heat shock protein (HSP) 27 is a member of the small HSP family that plays a part in the regulation of epithelial cell growth and differentiation, wound healing, apoptosis and cell protection against inflammatory cytotoxicity mediators. Thus the expression of HSP27 was investigated immunohistochemically in periapical granulomas with epithelial rests of Malassez and in radicular cysts. Anti-HSP27 mouse monoclonal antibody and peroxidase-labeled streptavidin-biotin standard technique were used to study the expression of HSP27. Proliferating epithelial cell rests, and islands of epithelium and ep

Highlights of human toxocariasis.

Human toxocariasis is a helminthozoonosis due to the migration of Toxocara species larvae through human organism. Humans become infected by ingesting either embryonated eggs from soil (geophagia, pica), dirty hands or raw vegetables, or larvae from undercooked giblets. The diagnosis relies upon sensitive immunological methods (ELISA or western-blot) which use Toxocara excretory-secretory antigens. Seroprevalence is high in developed countries, especially in rural areas, and also in some tropical islands. The clinical spectrum of the disease comprises four syndromes, namely visceral larva migra

Two cases of ectopic hamartomatous thymoma.

Ectopic hamartomatous thymoma (EHT) is a rare benign neoplasm. Since it was named by Rosai et al. in 1984, 24 cases have been reported. We herein report two cases of EHT, one of which presented with massive myoid cells, and review the literature related to EHT. Both of our cases displayed the typical features of EHT: (1) nests of epithelial cells, including solid, cystic, or glandular epithelial islands; (2) spindle cells dominating the microscopic picture; and (3) adipose cells which intermingle haphazardly to impart a hamartomatous quality to the tumor. In this paper, we observed massive myo

Isolation of Japanese encephalitis virus from mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) collected in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, 1997-1998.

After Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus emerged in the Torres Strait in Australia in 1995, investigations were initiated into the origin of the incursion. New Guinea was considered the most likely source, given its proximity to islands of the Torres Strait. Almost 400,000 adult mosquitoes were processed for virus isolation from 26 locations in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) between February 1996 and February 1998, yielding three isolates of JE virus. Two isolates of Murray Valley encephalitis, 17 isolates of Sindbis, and 1 each of Sepik and Ross River viruses were also obtained.

Subadult health and disease in prehistoric Tonga, Polynesia.

This article focuses on the differential diagnosis of pathologic lesions recorded on the limbs and crania of 17 subadults from two pre-European burial mounds in Tonga, western Polynesia. All affected subadults were between the ages of 6 months and 3 years at death. The lesions described consist primarily of subperiosteal new bone deposition on the limbs and endocranial surface. However, the presence of cribra orbitalia in a number of individuals indicates concurrent iron-deficiency anaemia. A differential diagnosis of haematogenous osteomyelitis, congenital syphilis, yaws, scurvy, hypervitamin

[Epithelial tumors with thymus differentiation of the thyroid gland and the neck].

Epithelial tumors with thymus-like differentiation occurring in the thyroid gland and the neck, delineate four entities with distinct histological features and different behaviour. The spindle epithelial tumors with thymus-like differentiation are potentially malignant tumors occurring in the thyroid gland of young patients. They are highly cellular with pattern of spindle cells and tubulopapillary formations and mucinous glands. Carcinomas showing thymus-like differentiation of the thyroid gland are histologically identical to some thymic carcinomas. The ectopic hamartomatous thymoma is stric

[Eosinophilic meningitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis].

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the most common etiological agent of eosinophilic meningitis. Adults are harbored in the pulmonary arteries of rats. Larvae develop within various natural (mollusks) and paratenic (snails...) hosts. After ingestion, larvae reach the human central nervous system where they cannot complete their life cycle. This zoonosis is usually seen in Southeast Asia and South Pacific islands. Nevertheless, a few imported cases have been reported in Western countries, possible because of the incubation delay. Mild meningeal irritation signs, paresthesia, cranial nerve abnormali

[Lipoleiomyoma of the uterus].

The presence of fatty tissue in the myometrium is anomalous; this alteration has been interpreted either as a lipomatous degeneration or as a metaplasia of smooth muscle cells or, still, as a real neoplasm, frequently associated with a leiomyoma, the so-called lipoleiomyoma. The observation of a case of lipoleiomyoma stimulated us to ascertain the real incidence of this lesion which is commonly considered to be rare. We examined 620 single or multiple uterine leiomyomas with extensive sampling of all the areas suspected to contain fatty tissue islands. Five times out of seven the presence of f

Atypical parkinsonism in a family of Portuguese ancestry: absence of CAG repeat expansion in the MJD1 gene.

We studied the clinical features and molecular genetics of a family, afflicted with a form of atypical parkinsonism, originating from the Madeira Islands of Portugal. We examined four affected individuals and reviewed clinical information on one other affected family member. Mean age at onset was 31 years. Parkinsonism (akinesia, rigidity, gait disturbance) was the most prominent feature in advanced disease. Levodopa responsiveness with peak-dose dyskinesia was present in one individual. Initial symptoms and other clinical features were variable and included other extrapyramidal signs (dystoni

Ultrasonography in schistosomiasis in Africa.

Approximately 50 publications have become available in the international literature on ultrasonography in schistosomiasis in Africa. Geographically these cover Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania and East African Islands as well as Zimbabwe. Further studies are ongoing in many countries, such as Burundi, Ghana, Madagaskar and Uganda. It was shown that ultrasonography is useful in the detection of morbidity induced by schistosomiasis on an individual basis and on the community level. There is indication for varying morbidity patterns in different African foci.

Increased incidence of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid in rural regions in Greece.

A role of environmental factors for the development of Medullary Carcinoma of the Thyroid (MTC) has been shown for animals, but has only been speculated for humans. In the present study we analyzed our registry of 58 sporadic MTCs for the place of origin and place of residence and compared these with 408 other thyroid carcinomas of different histology who are attending the same Endocrine Clinics in the Athens area. Clustering of sporadic MTCs was observed in the Ionian islands, where an increased incidence of familial cases has previously been observed. Patients with sporadic MTCs originated m

Vaccine-preventable disease susceptibility in a young adult Micronesian population.

Current US military recruit vaccination policy presumes that recruits have had a complete childhood immunization series. This assumption may not be appropriate for recruits from Micronesia, who may have had limited access to modern health care, including immunization programs. During 1988 and 1990, a cross-sectional serosurvey was conducted among 66 US military recruits, 56 from the Federated States of Micronesia and 10 from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, collectively referred to as Micronesia. Antibody seronegativity levels for 12 vaccine-preventable (or potentially so) diseases were:

Burst suppression and impairment of neocortical ontogenesis: electroclinical and neuropathologic findings in two infants with early myoclonic encephalopathy.

We report the electroclinical and neuropathologic correlations in 2 children aged 2.5 months affected by early myoclonic encephalopathy characterized by epileptic seizures, erratic myoclonus, and an EEG pattern of burst suppression. Despite different etiologies, the neuropathologic findings showed similar abnormalities in both cases, with no substantial impairment of the myelination processes. Islands of matrix tissue scattered in the periventricular region and neurons aligned marginally in the bulbar olives were detected. The presence of numerous large spiny neurons dispersed in the white mat
