Ghost Cell Odontogenic Carcinoma Arising in a Previous Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is a rare malignant tumor of odontogenic origin, with only about 50 cases reported in the English literature so far. Histologically, it is characterized by ghost cells, dentinoid deposits, high grade malignant cellular features, and areas of necrosis and invasion. Having common histological features with other odontogenic ghost cell lesions (OGCL) like calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) and dentinogenic ghost cell tumors, it is crucial to recognize GCOC malignant features, as it can be destructive and invasive, sometimes showing distant metastases and hig

Rehabilitation of the Completely Edentulous Mandible by All-on-Four Treatment Concept: A Retrospective Cohort Study with Up to 10 Years Follow-Up.

(1) Background and Objectives. Currently, there are no definitive long-term data about clinically significant difference in the failure of prosthesis and implant or marginal bone loss related to the rehabilitation of the completely edentulous mandible by all-on-four treatment concept. The main aim of present investigation was to report the long-term outcomes (10-years follow-up) of complete-arch mandibular rehabilitations based on the all-on-four concept. (2) Materials and Methods. Patients in need of extractions of teeth due to the occurrence of caries and/or severe periodontal disease and pa

What is a better modality of maxillomandibular fixation: bone-supported arch bars or Erich arch bars? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Any procedure that aims to manage maxillofacial fracture is incomplete without meticulous maxillomandibular fixation (MMF). For decades, Erich arch bars (EABs) have been used for this purpose, but with the advent of bone-supported arch bars (BSABs), more surgeons now prefer them to conventional EABs. The present study was designed to identify which of the two methods is best. An exhaustive literature search was conducted in June 2020 on various electronic databases to select studies that compared EABs and BSABs. Outcomes such as duration of placement, stability, oral hygiene, and complications

Is manual reduction adequate for intraoperative control of occlusion during fixation of mandibular fractures? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this systematic review was to find out if manual intraoperative control of occlusion is adequate for the reduction of mandibular fractures in comparison with intermaxillary fixation (IMF). We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library and Clinical Trials Registry, and the references of included trials. Our primary outcomes of interest were the reduction of fracture anatomically and radiographically, occlusal disturbances, and the incidence of revision procedures due to poor occlusion or reduction. Our secondary outcomes of interest were operating time and infective complications.

Success Rate and Safety of Dental Implantology in Patients Treated With Antiresorptive Medication: A Systematic Review.

There is no agreement of data on the subject of implant failure and the development of osteonecrosis in patients receiving antiresorptive agents. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate whether dental implants placed in patients on antiresorptive medication have an increased failure rate and whether the implant placement or the implant existence are risk factors for developing medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). An electronic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, and all publications fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included. The search was completed by a

Computational Evaluation of Potential Correction Methods for Unicoronal Craniosynostosis.

Unicoronal craniosynostosis is the second most common type of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis: it is characterized by ipsilateral forehead and fronto-parietal region flattening with contralateral compensatory bossing. It is a complex condition; therefore, which is difficult to treat because of the asymmetry in the orbits, cranium, and face. The aim of this study is to understand optimal osteotomy locations, dimensions, and force requirements for surgical operations of unicoronal craniosynostosis using a patient-specific finite element model and - at the same time - to evaluate the potential appl

Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia with a Concurrent Glandular Odontogenic Cyst.

The presence of non-odontogenic cysts associated with benign fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws has been well documented. However, literature is scant when describing benign fibro-osseous lesions with associated odontogenic cysts. This case report highlights the presence of a concurrent developmental odontogenic cyst, glandular odontogenic cyst with extensive squamous metaplasia, in a patient with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). The postulated pathogenesis of these synchronous lesions is discussed along with a review of current literature. Surgical treatment is discouraged for florid CO

Feeding kinematics and morphology of the alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula, Lacépède, 1803).

Living gars are a small clade of seven species that occupy an important position on the actinopterygian phylogenetic tree as members of Holostei, sister-group to teleosts, and exhibit many plesiomorphic traits used to interpret and reconstruct early osteichthyan feeding mechanisms. Previous studies of gar feeding kinematics have focused on the ram-based, lateral-snapping mode of prey capture found in the narrow-snouted Lepisosteus genus, whereas this study focuses on a member of the broad-snouted Atractosteus sister-genus, the alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula, Lacépède, 1803). Radiological Evaluation Key to Diagnosis of Idiopathic Solitary Cyst.

Idiopathic solitary cysts have a predilection for long bones and the mandible. Although the origin of these cysts is unclear, the prognosis seems to be good, given proper diagnosis and surgical treatment. A 14-year-old female patient with a bone lesion in the right mandibular ramus was referred to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Medical University of Gdansk, Poland. Due to severe headache lasting two days, the patient had previously undergone magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination of the head. A unilocular bone cyst in the mandible was discovered incidentally. Comparison wit

Dentofacial Considerations in Genioplasty.

Chin augmentation, particularly with implants, has become popular in recent years. For the most part, the focus is on the position of the pogonion. The rest of the mid-face, including the maxilla and mandible, are usually ignored. In this article, different scenarios and deformities in the maxillofacial complex that can affect the chin position and shape of its overlying soft tissue are illustrated. It is the author’s view that a number of genioplasty augmentation procedures should be deferred. Discussion of alternative treatments should take place with patients regarding their underlying skel

Relevance of Bisphosphonate Therapy in Osteoporosis and Cancer--No Cause for Alarm in Dentistry.

This report provides important background information on osteoporosis (OP) and bone complications of cancer for the dental team, and discusses why bisphosphonate (BP) therapy is vital for patients with the two conditions. It also addresses several questions, including in particular: 'Is withholding BP therapy the best way to prevent osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) occurrence?' Also,'Of the two, which is more important: ONJ or OP fracture prevention?' CPD/Clinical Relevance: BP therapy offers OP patients the promise of a fracture-free life and the prevention of fracture-related pain, disability,

Familial Gigantiform Cementoma: Case Report of an Unusual Clinical Manifestation and Possible Mechanism Related To "Calcium Steal Disorder".

Familial gigantiform cementoma is an exceedingly rare but distinct subtype of cemento-osseous-fibrous lesion. Undocumented radiographic changes and related bone metabolism disorder are herein hypothesized and discussed. We present an adolescent case with recurrent familial gigantiform cementoma who received surgical intervention in our hospital. Apart from typical multiquadrant and expansile abnormalies involving both jaws, he also suffered from several times of fractures in lower extremity. Furthermore, radiographic examinations of calvaria, pelvis, femoris, tibia, and fibula all revealed rad

First shark from the Late Devonian (Frasnian) Gogo Formation, Western Australia sheds new light on the development of tessellated calcified cartilage.

BACKGROUND: Living gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates) comprise two divisions, Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes, including euchondrichthyans with prismatic calcified cartilage, and extinct stem chondrichthyans) and Osteichthyes (bony fishes including tetrapods). Most of the early chondrichthyan ('shark') record is based upon isolated teeth, spines, and scales, with the oldest articulated sharks that exhibit major diagnostic characters of the group--prismatic calcified cartilage and pelvic claspers in males--being from the latest Devonian, c. 360 Mya. This paucity of information about early ch

Occlusal stability.

Occlusion is the foundation for clinical success in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontic treatment. Understanding those principles is critical when restoring a patient's occlusion. Many philosophies, devices, and theories of occlusion have evolved based on anecdotal clinical observations and applied geometric perceptions. The literature has reported these classic and contemporary occlusal concepts. As evidence-based dentistry emerged, it championed scrutiny of previously held beliefs, resulting in the abandonment of many pragmatic, yet beneficial occlusal procedures. The impetus toward

Morphometric characteristics of cortical and trabecular bone in atrophic edentulous mandibles.

OBJECTIVES: Adaptations of the alveolar ridge after tooth loss have been well described. However, studies on the morphometric characteristics of cortical bone are rare; hence, this study of human atrophic edentulous mandibles was undertaken. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Total cortical area, porosity, and thickness, and the percentage of cortical area in the complete mandibular area as well as in an area (height, 10 mm) starting at the most caudal point of the trabecular compartment and extending in the coronal direction were determined in 185 thin ground sections of edentulous mandibles (incisor reg

Scoring systems of cleft-related facial deformities: a review of literature.

Objective :  There is a need for an internationally agreed objective method of assessing cleft-related deformities in order to compare the results of individual surgeons and different surgical techniques or to determine the optimal timing for primary lip closure. To assess the current methods, an overview of the recent developments in postoperative scoring systems of cleft-related deformities was made. Methods :  A Medline search from June 2003 through July 2011 was conducted, and references in the selected articles were checked. This search yielded 428 articles, and after application of the i
