Variations in the 24 h temporal patterns and time budgets of grazing, rumination, and idling behaviors in grazing dairy cows in a New Zealand system.

This study investigated the variations in the temporal distributions and the lengths of times utilized for grazing, ruminating, and idling behaviors by grazing dairy cows over 24 h. Spring-calved lactating dairy cows (N = 54) from three breeds, Holstein-Friesian (HFR), Jersey (JE), and KiwiCross (KC) in different lactations (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and with different breeding worth index values (103 < BW > 151) were selected. The cows were managed through a rotational grazing scheme and milked once a day at 0500 hours. The cows grazed mainly pasture and consumed additional feeds (maize silage and turni

Phytogenic actives supplemented in hyperprolific sows: effects on maternal transfer of phytogenic compounds, colostrum and milk features, performance and antioxidant status of sows and their offspring, and piglet intestinal gene expression.

Phytogenic actives (PA) are plant-derived natural bioactive compounds that may promote livestock health and well-being, as well as improve growth performance and production efficiency. The current study aims to evaluate their effects on sows and their offspring. Eighty-one hyperprolific sows (up to parity 7) were assigned to 3 experimental treatments. Control sows were offered a nonsupplemented diet during gestation and lactation, and treated sows were fed the control diet supplemented with 1 g/kg of a blend of PA (BPA) in lactation (L) or during gestation and lactation (GL). An evaluation was

Cow-level risk factors for reproductive tract disease diagnosed by 2 methods in pasture-grazed dairy cattle in Ireland.

The cow-side diagnosis of reproductive tract disease (RTD) involves identifying the presence of purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) and ultrasonographic endometritis (UE). The objectives of our study were to obtain prevalence estimates for RTD diagnosed by 2 methods (PVD and UE scoring) and to investigate the risk factors for increased probability of RTD if these methods are used in isolation or in combination. Our retrospective observational cohort study tested the hypothesis that RTD assessed by 2 methods would have similar risk factors, and that those would be mainly cow- and calving-related f

Effects of oral administration of acidogenic boluses at dry-off on performance and behavior of dairy cattle.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of oral acidogenic mineral boluses (196 g) containing anionic salts to facilitate the transition from lactation to the dry stage by inducing a mild and temporary metabolic acidosis at dry-off. In experiment 1, 84 lactating cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatment groups consisting of an oral administration of 0, 1, or 2 boluses 5 d before dry-off to evaluate the effects on milk production. In experiment 2, 16 lactating cows were involved in a crossover study to evaluate the effects of the administration of 2 boluses on milk production

Morphine pretreatment increases opioid inhibitory effects on maternal behavior.

Ongoing maternal behavior in rats is under the inhibitory influence of opiates. Exposure to drugs of abuse may result in a progressive and enduring enhancement of their reinforcing effects. Little attention has been paid to the possibility that puerperal treatment with morphine may lead to sensitization to this drug, ultimately influencing the effects of opiates on maternal behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the abrupt withdrawal of repeated treatment with morphine chlorhydrate (MC) during late pregnancy and early lactation may influence maternal behavior in lactating

Onset and evolution of stunting in infants and children. Examples from the Human Nutrition Collaborative Research Support Program. Kenya and Egypt studies.

The etiology of the early onset of stunting is diverse among populations of varying biological, environmental and cultural circumstances. This is exemplified within the Nutrition CRSP project, which took place in three different populations and ecological conditions. Within each study area a different mix and varying proportions of causative factors were identified. At least in Kenya, and probably in Mexico, the problem has its antecedents in prepregnancy and pregnancy. Powerful determinants of the infants' size at birth and during the first 6 months of life are maternal size upon entry into p

Evaluation of the perinatal, postnatal and teratogenic effects of cocoa powder and theobromine in Sprague-Dawley/CD rats.

Studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of cocoa powder (CP) and theobromine (TBR) on perinatal and postnatal parameters and to assess their potential teratogenicity in the rat. In the peri/postnatal study, CP was given at 0, 2.5, 5.0 or 7.5% in the diet throughout gestation and lactation (postnatal day 21). In the teratology study, rats were given diets containing 0, 2.5 or 5.0% CP or 0.0675 or 0.135% TBR on days 6-19 of gestation. The CP-treated dams in the peri/postnatal study consumed significantly more food than did the controls during gestation. Weight gain was increased only in t

Electronic Health Record-Embedded Structural Interventions to Improve Sepsis Bundle Quality Measure Performance: A Quality Improvement Initiative at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Though emphasized as a quality metric, sepsis quality measure (SEP-1) compliance remains low nationwide. Electronic health record (EHR)-based interventions show promise, but few have examined EHR laboratory reference value misconfiguration as a distinct driver of noncompliance. LOCAL PROBLEM: The San Francisco Veterans Affairs, a 110-bed tertiary care center, recorded 3 consecutive quarters of SEP-1 composite performance in the lowest national quintile, nadiring at 31.5%. METHODS: A multidisciplinary team applied LEAN-A3 methodology to identify root causes of low SEP-1 performanc

Predictors of invasive mechanical ventilation requirement and mortality in hypercapnic respiratory failure: A retrospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: While hypercapnic respiratory failure (HRF) has been widely studied in emergency department (ED) populations, the prognostic significance of metabolic compensation and lactate levels remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association of creatinine, bicarbonate (HCO3), chloride, and lactate levels with the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and inhospital mortality in patients with HRF. METHODS: This single-center, cross-sectional study included adult patients who presented to the ED with respiratory distress and arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide

Umbilical cord arterial and venous gases, ionogram, and glucose level for predicting neonatal morbidity at term.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which parameter of umbilical arterial cord gas analysis, pH, base deficit, lactate concentration, ionogram values, or glucose level index is the best predictor of neonatal morbidity at term. DESIGN: We conducted a 15-month retrospective cohort study that included all nonanomalous, singleton, term births at a single center. The predictive ability of lactate concentration, base deficit, pH, ionogram values, and glucose level were compared using receiver-operating characteristic curves for global and neurological composite morbidity. Optimal cutoff values for lactate conc

Low-dose prostacyclin in treatment of severe brain trauma evaluated with microdialysis and jugular bulb oxygen measurements.

BACKGROUND: The endogenous substance prostacyclin is a substance with the potential to improve microcirculation and oxygenation around contusions in the brain following a head trauma by its vasodilatory, antiaggregatory and antiadhesive effects. Microdialysis measurements of local concentrations of selected interstitial substances in the brain, and measurements of venous jugular bulb oxygenation reflecting overall brain oxygenation, might be useful to evaluate possible therapeutic effects of a specific therapy, such as treatment with prostacyclin. METHODS: This case report study on six patien

Postpartum Care for Patients With Diabetes: A Comprehensive and Whole-Life Approach.

Diabetes in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic syndrome, mood disorders, intimate partner violence, and additional sequelae. These risks may persist beyond the pregnancy into the postpartum period. Comprehensive management and counseling require an understanding of the physiology of the puerperium, types of potential complications, and evidence behind management options. This review will discuss evidence-based immediate postpartum management, the impact of lactation on diabetes, and the long-term and transgenerational impact of diabetes in pregnancy.

Maternal and Early-Life Nutrition and Health.

Nutritional challenges prior to and during gestation, lactation, and early life are known to influence the lifelong health of the infant. In this editorial, I briefly discuss the 13 articles published in this Special Issue, "Maternal and Early-Life Nutrition and Health". This Special Issue discusses topics including maternal nutrition behaviors, maternal overnutrition/obesity, maternal iron deficiency, breastfeeding, and others. This issue paves the way to better understand perinatal nutrition and how it can impact maternal and offspring health.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding in hidradenitis suppurativa: A review of medication safety.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that disproportionately affects women of childbearing age. Pregnancy influences HS severity for many women, thus diligent continued management throughout pregnancy and postpartum may be required. Herein, we provide an updated review of pregnancy and lactation safety data for HS medications, including topical antiseptic washes, topical and systemic antibiotics, biologic and nonbiologic immunomodulators, immunosuppressants, adjunct medical therapies, and pain medications, to help guide risk-benefit discussions between providers and

Continuous heart murmur in a 26-year-old woman.

In this report, we describe a continuous murmur heard in a young woman at the beginning of her lactation period, which illustrates a typical example of 'Mammary Souffle', described one century ago. Colour Doppler and pulsed-wave mode echocardiogram allowed to precise, for the first time, the arterial nature of increased systolic and diastolic blood flow in tortuous branches of internal mammary artery, most probably responsible of the murmur, after ruling out any other origin of continuous murmur.

Breastfeeding in the woman with a compromised nervous system.

An increasing number of women with physical limitations are choosing to conceive and are entering the health care system for the care of their pregnancies. These women are faced with the choice of how to feed the child. Although research specific to lactation and nervous system disorders could not be found, this paper reviews selected articles from the literature on three central nervous system disorders: spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. Potential effects on breastfeeding are discussed.

Epidemiology of metabolic disorders in the periparturient dairy cow.

The descriptive epidemiology and risk factors were reviewed for six clinical disorders: milk fever, downer cow syndrome, hypomagnesemic tetany, udder edema, left displaced abomasum, and ketosis. Data were included also from preliminary analyses of a data set from approximately 61,000 Finnish Ayrshire cows. A web of postulated associations among the metabolic disorders and other risks factors (previous lactation diseases and milk yield, calf factors, certain dry period nutritional factors, dystocia, retained placenta, and metritis) was diagrammed.

Malnutrition and behavior: the performance versus learning problem revisited.

At 100 days of age rats, whose dams suffered severe zinc deficiency and/or undernutrition throughout lactation, were tested in two learning tasks. One test was an original discrimination learning task and the other test was a more difficult reverse discrimination learning task. In the reverse learning test, performance differed significantly between rehabilitated malnourished rats and normal rats. Difference in motivation, and not learning ability, was the explanation for the differences in performance between the malnourished and normal rats.
