The lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood and blast transformation were studied on days 0, 3, 7, 11, 15, 20 and 35 after infection in progesterone-treated guinea-pigs which had been experimentally infected with Entamoeba histolytica by intracaecal inoculation. Serum lactate dehydrogenase activity (LDH) was examined in 66 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), 26 with acute non-lymphocytic leukemia (ANLL), and 116 with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Patients with acquired hypogammaglobulinaemia usually have near normal numbers of B cells and normal T cell function. A prospective study was done to determine the incidence of neutrophil storage pool (NSP) depletion in clinically septic neonates with peripheral neutropenia (less than 1500/mm3). Infants with NSP depletion were then randomized in a controlled study of polymorphonuclear leukocyte transfusions. Bone marrow examinations were done in 13 patients, and NSP depletion was noted in 3 (23%) patients. All patients with no NSP depletion had peripheral neutrophil recovery and 8 of 10 survived. Rabbits were injected by subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and intravenous routes with suspensions of motile zoospores of a Pythium sp. isolated from a subcutaneous lesion of a horse in north Queensland. We have developed an experimental model for the quantitative examination of the kinetics of the inflammatory cell response to thermal corneal injury. Using this model, we found a considerable difference in the type of inflammatory cell response to vasculogenic (peripheral) and nonvasculogenic (central) thermal cautery of the cornea. Serum opsonic antibody activity and peripheral neutrophil counts were measured in 41 infants who received an exchange transfusion of fresh whole blood for early onset group B streptococcal septicemia.
