This case report describes a middle-aged male who presented with symptoms of dementia. During a routine screening in a lumbar puncture, a total of 209 × 109 leukocytes was found in his cerebrospinal fluid, 208 of which were mononuclear. The patient was admitted to an infectious disease ward, and serum analyses showed a positive Wassermann reaction and a rapid plasma reagin of 128. The man was diagnosed with neurosyphilis and started on penicillin treatment. This lasted 14 days, and the symptoms of dementia decreased substantially.

We present the case of a 64-year-old male with a history of chronic liver disease due to hepatitis C virus, with a sustained viral response after oral antiviral treatment and without follow-up for 5 years. He was admitted after a one-month history of constitutional symptoms, low-grade fever, abdominal pain and a palpable epigastric tumor. Analysis showed marked elevation of acute phase reactants (48,000 leukocytes and C-reactive protein of 19mg/dl) and dissociated cholestasis. Two lesions were identified by abdominal CT.

Trisomy 13 syndrome is a rare disorder that carries a high mortality rate due to abnormal prenatal development resulting in serious birth defects. Although genitourinary malformations are commonly seen in trisomy 13 syndrome, to our knowledge, the association of cloacal exstrophy with trisomy 13 has been extremely rarely reported. Herein, a newborn with trisomy 13 syndrome having multiple congenital anomalies, including cloacal exstrophy, is presented, and the importance of structural anomalies of the neutrophilic leukocytes on a blood smear in supporting diagnosis of trisomy 13 is discussed.

We report the case of a cord blood haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipient who was vaccinated for Yellow Fever (YF) 7 days before initiating chemotherapy and had persistent YF antibodies more than 3 years after vaccination. Since the stem cell donor was never exposed to wild YF or to the YF vaccine, and our patient was not exposed to YF or revaccinated, this finding strongly suggests the persistence of recipient immunity. We briefly discuss potential consequences of incomplete elimination of recipient's leukocytes following existing haematopoietic cancer treatments.

The hydrosoluble fraction of Euphorbia royleana latex (AER), administered by gavage at doses of 50-200 mg/kg, showed dose-dependent anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects in different acute and chronic test models in rats and mice. It reduced the exudate volume and the migration of leukocytes and showed a poor inhibitory effect on the granuloma formation induced by cotton pellets, while it had a low ulcerogenic score. To analyze the diagnostic value of various laboratory tests for the confirmation of adult-onset glycogen storage disease type II (GSD II), we performed a clinical, biochemical, and genetic study of 18 patients with this disease. Measurement of acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) activity in muscle and histopathologic analysis of muscle tissue appeared to have no additional value when GAA activity in leukocytes was clearly deficient. Our study showed that creatine kinase elevation is a sensitive marker of GSD II. A diagnostic protocol is formulated.

Cyclic neutropenia is a rare hematologic disorder of unknown origin. Periodic decreases in blood leukocytes with relative neutropenia and lymphocytosis are typical. These episodes appear in regular intervals of 15-35 days and last three to seven days. They are associated with physical weakness, fever, septic complications and necrosis of mucous membranes. Between the episodes, the patients are in complete clinical and laboratory remission. We report the case of a 34 year-old patient suffering from cyclic neutropenia with ulcerous lesions of the oral mucosa.
