The relationship of Theory of Mind with symptoms and cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder: a prospective study.

Previous studies in bipolar disorder suggest patients' deficient performance in Theory of Mind tasks, both during manic or depressive episodes and in remission. However, most of the extant studies were cross-sectional and did not control for potential confounders such as residual symptoms or co-existent deficits in other cognitive functions. The present study is the first prospective study that assessed the effect of remission on Theory of Mind (ToM) in patients with Bipolar Disorder (BD) controlling for other cognitive deficits. ToM was assessed in 29 patients with BD type I during an episode

Hyperintense MRI lesions in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis and review.

BACKGROUND: Cortical and subcortical hyperintensities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are thought to represent areas of ischemic damage to brain tissue. Researchers have focused on the possible role these lesions may have in psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder. In 1997, the proposed 'vascular mania' diagnosis suggested utilizing not only the presence of strokes, but also confluent hyperintensities in its diagnostic criteria. This study was conducted to use meta-analytic techniques to investigate the association of hyperintensities and bipolar illness and to evaluate the

Omega-3 fatty acids for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is a complex psychiatric disorder and is amongst the top thirty causes of worldwide disability. Mood stabilisers are the primary pharmacological intervention, both in the treatment of acute episodes and in prophylaxis. There is, however, mounting evidence that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids may be beneficial in psychiatric conditions, particularly those involving disturbances of mood. OBJECTIVES: To review the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids as either a monotherapy or an adjunctive treatment for bipolar disorder. SEARCH STRATEGY: Electronic sear

Gender, suicidality and bipolar mixed states in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between mixed states and suicidality among adolescent outpatients presenting with a DSM-IV defined major depressive episode (MDE). METHODS: Two-hundred and forty-seven adolescents meeting the criteria for MDE were screened for the presence of concurrent, intra-MDE hypomania/mania (i.e., mixed states). All patients were asked whether they had current suicidal ideation or had recently attempted any self-destructive physical act associated with the thought of dying (i.e., a suicide attempt). The data were subjected to analys

Acoustic and Natural Language Markers for Bipolar Disorder: A Pilot, mHealth Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring symptoms of bipolar disorder (BD) is a challenge faced by mental health services. Speech patterns are crucial in assessing the current experiences, emotions, and thought patterns of people with BD. Natural language processing (NLP) and acoustic signal processing may support ongoing BD assessment within a mobile health (mHealth) framework. OBJECTIVE: Using both acoustic and NLP-based features from the speech of people with BD, we built an app-based tool and tested its feasibility and performance to remotely assess the individual clinical status. METHODS: We carried out

Sex differences in pediatric major depressive episodes: a cross-sectional study on psychiatric symptoms in early-onset mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in psychiatric symptoms among children and adolescents with a major depressive episode (MDE) are less studied than among adults. Previous non-recent studies reported a greater severity in adolescent girls and small differences between sexes in specific symptoms. We aim to explore the differences between male and female patients in the diagnoses, comorbidities, and psychiatric symptoms in a large cohort of pediatric patients referred to a tertiary center for child and adolescent psychiatry. METHODS: We collected cross-sectional data on 382 consecutively referred pat

A pilot investigation of differential hydroxymethylation levels in patient-derived neural stem cells implicates altered cortical development in bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mental illness characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression and associated with social and cognitive disturbances. Environmental factors, such as maternal smoking and childhood trauma, are believed to modulate risk genotypes and contribute to the pathogenesis of BD, suggesting a key role in epigenetic regulation during neurodevelopment. 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) is an epigenetic variant of particular interest, as it is highly expressed in the brain and is implicated in neurodevelopment, and psychiatric and neurological disord

Efficacy of Adjunctive D-Cycloserine to Intermittent Theta-Burst Stimulation for Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The antidepressant effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation protocols for major depressive disorder (MDD) are thought to depend on synaptic plasticity. The theta-burst stimulation (TBS) protocol synaptic plasticity is known to be N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-receptor dependent, yet it is unknown whether enhancing NMDA-receptor signaling improves treatment outcomes in MDD. OBJECTIVE: To test whether low doses of the NMDA-receptor partial-agonist, D-cycloserine, would enhance intermittent TBS (iTBS) treatment outcomes in MDD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a single-

A Prospective Study of Ultrasonographic and FNAC Correlation of Thyroid Swellings with Histopathology.

Recombinant preparations of the cytokine interferon (IFN)-alpha are increasingly used to treat a number of medical conditions, including chronic viral hepatitis and several malignancies. Although frequently effective, IFN alpha induces a variety of neuropsychiatric adverse effects, including an acute confusional state that develops rapidly after initiation of high-dose IFN alpha, a depressive syndrome that develops more slowly over weeks to months of treatment, and manic conditions most often characterised by extreme irritability and agitation, but also occasionally by euphoria. Acute IFN alph

Genetic validation of bipolar disorder identified by automated phenotyping using electronic health records.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heritable mood disorder characterized by episodes of mania and depression. Although genomewide association studies (GWAS) have successfully identified genetic loci contributing to BD risk, sample size has become a rate-limiting obstacle to genetic discovery. Electronic health records (EHRs) represent a vast but relatively untapped resource for high-throughput phenotyping. As part of the International Cohort Collection for Bipolar Disorder (ICCBD), we previously validated automated EHR-based phenotyping algorithms for BD against in-person diagnostic interviews (Castro
