Poor insight into memory impairment in patients with Huntington disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients suffering from Huntington disease (HD) have been shown to present with poor self-awareness of a variety of symptoms. The study aimed to assess the self-awareness of memory impairment in HD in comparison to advanced Parkinson disease (PD), mild PD and cervical dystonia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Self-awareness was tested in 23 patients with HD by comparing patient and caregiver ratings in reference to clinical control groups (25 patients with advanced PD, 21 with mild PD and 20 with cervical dystonia). Self-awareness was tested using the Self Rating Scale of Memory

Cognitive functions changes among Egyptian sewage network workers.

The current work aimed at investigating the cognitive functions impairment among workers of sewer networks due to exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) and the relation of this impairment, if any, to the level of H(2)S exposure biomarker 'urinary thiosulfate.' Besides, the validity of using Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) as screening test for cognitive impairment among the exposed workers was tested. The work was conducted among 33 sewage network maintenance male workers and a matched unexposed control group (n = 30). The participants were subjected to clinical neurological history, estim

A cognitive and neurophysiological test of change from an individual's baseline.

OBJECTIVE: An automated cognitive neurophysiological test is presented that characterizes how an individual was affected by a drug or treatment. The test calculates sub-scores for working memory task performance, cortical activation, and alertness, and combines the sub-scores into an overall score. METHODS: The test was applied in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of alcohol, caffeine, diphenhydramine, and sleep deprivation in 16 healthy adults. RESULTS: The between- and within-day variability of the sub-scores and overall scores for placebo were all near zero, suggesting that the sco

Early effects of electroconvulsive therapy on cognitive function.

OBJECTIVE: Routine screening of cognitive function during a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is recommended in several guidelines. However, there is little evidence regarding which measures are practical, change early in treatment, and are likely to predict longer term cognitive problems. We aimed to investigate the practicality of early formal cognitive screening in routine clinical practice of ECT. METHODS: Thirty-three patients aged 25 to 84 years were recruited from 2 ECT clinics. Assessment consisted of the Rey Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), The Short Form of the Colombia Univers

Tensor magnetic resonance imaging in a case of mild traumatic brain injury with lowered verbal intelligence quotient.

We report the case of a 31-year-old man who had mild traumatic brain injury as a result of an accident at the age of 24 years. Seven years after the trauma, at the age of 31 years, he had a lower verbal intelligence quotient than performance intelligence quotient by the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale - Revised, and frontal lobe dysfunction, for example, difficulty in maintaining or changing the set as revealed by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test Keio Version. Conventional brain magnetic resonance imaging had not shown any abnormalities. Abnormal brain areas were detected on magnetic resonanc

The impact of progressive semantic loss on reading aloud.

The role of semantics in reading aloud remains controversial. To explore this issue, the current study examined the impact of semantic loss on reading-aloud performance in 7 patients with semantic dementia. The results revealed a heterogenous pattern of reading difficulties. Of the patients, 2 selectively made errors on inconsistent words (i.e., surface dyslexia), 4 had a generalized reading deficit with increased errors on consistent words, inconsistent words, and nonwords, while the remaining patient had relatively intact reading-aloud accuracy. All patients had longer reading latencies on r

Primary and secondary anosognosia for memory impairment in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The neuropsychology of anosognosia for memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) was examined in 92 AD patients and 92 case matched individuals for comparison, using three quantitative methods of assessment: Experimenter Rating Scale (ERS), Objective Judgement Discrepancy (OJD) and Subjective-Rating Discrepancy (SRD). The OJD showed significant domain specific correlations with memory functioning as well as a significant correlation with susceptibility to intrusional errors. Memory or executive dysfunction may affect the immediate ability to judge cognitive performance in a domain specific

A case of unusual autobiographical remembering.

This report describes AJ, a woman whose remembering dominates her life. Her memory is "nonstop, uncontrollable, and automatic." AJ spends an excessive amount of time recalling her personal past with considerable accuracy and reliability. If given a date, she can tell you what she was doing and what day of the week it fell on. She differs from other cases of superior memory who use practiced mnemonics to remember vast amounts of personally irrelevant information. We propose the name hyperthymestic syndrome, from the Greek word thymesis meaning remembering, and that AJ is the first reported case

The Cambridge Behavioral Inventory: validation and application in a memory clinic.

The authors examined the validity of the Cambridge Behavioral Inventory (CBI), a questionnaire investigating broad neuropsychiatric symptoms and everyday functional ability in dementia. Test-retest reliability of the CBI was acceptable. Cross-validation with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory showed good concurrent validity of the CBI. The CBI reliably demonstrated that disinhibition, stereotypic behavior, elation, anxiety, poor self-care, and changes in eating habits occurred more commonly in patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration than those with Alzheimer's disease. The authors conclude

The Maudsley Bipolar Disorder Project: executive dysfunction in bipolar disorder I and its clinical correlates.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive abnormalities are increasingly recognized as a feature of bipolar I disorder (BDI,) but there is limited information regarding the pattern and severity of cognitive impairment during remission and its relationship with clinical variables. METHODS: Forty-four remitted BDI patients recruited from a representative treatment sample and an equal number of matched healthy volunteers underwent comprehensive clinical and cognitive assessments. Cognitive evaluation covered the domains of IQ, memory, and executive function. The profile of cognitive deficits in patients was examine

Cerebral hypoperfusion and amyloid-induced synergistic impairment of hippocampal CA1 synaptic efficacy and spatial memory in young adult rats.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, cerebral hypoperfusion/hypometabolism, and amyloid angiopathy. The former two and cell loss occur late in the disease and are probably not the leading causes for the initial memory decline. Cerebral hypoperfusion is a pre-clinical event in AD and represents the most accurate indicator predicting the probable AD patients to develop AD in a future time. However, in young animals, cerebral hypoperfusion as those matching the reduction in AD has no significant effects on learning and memory. Here, w

Penetrating brain injury with nasal entry by a plastic stick. Case report.

A case of a 52-year-old male presented with an unusual penetrating brain injury with nasal entry. At admission he had erythema of periorbital soft tissue in the left eye and epistaxis. His neurological condition was lethargic (Glasgow Coma Scale of 13) with nonfluent aphasia. Computed tomography scan revealed intracranial contusion hematoma in the left frontal lobe and fracture of the left frontal base, which were treated surgically. At the 6-month follow-up he still showed nonfluent aphasia. Disturbances, mostly cognitive, were noted on his psychological tests. A survey of the literature reve

Effects of idebenone on memory impairment induced in ischemic and embolization models of cerebrovascular disturbance in rats.

Two rat models of memory impairment in passive avoidance learning induced by cerebrovascular disturbance, were established to estimate the effects of a cerebral metabolic enhancer, idebenone. Transient and global cerebral ischemia in rats, produced by 4-vessel occlusion for 200 s immediately after the acquisition trial of passive avoidance learning, shortened the latencies in the retention test trial performed 24 h later. This retrograde amnesia was reversed significantly by idebenone administered orally or intraperitoneally at the doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg before the retention test trial. Ideb

Tracking difficulties and paranoid ideation during hashish and alcohol intoxication.

In a double-blind study using each subject as his own control, 6 normal subjects smoked 20 mg of THC within 10- and 45-minute periods ("fast" and "slow" conditions, respectively). Each subject also received placebo and doses of alcohol calculated to be as intoxicating as the THC doses. In fast conditions, THC induced greater difficulties with tracking information over time, greater disruptions of self-other interpersonal perceptions, and more persecutory ideation that did alcohol or placebo. Similar but less marked differences were found in the slow conditions. As hypothesized, changes in trac

K739 is preferentially targeted over K725 in the deSUMOylation process of neuronal nitric oxide synthase.

INTRODUCTION: Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) produces nitric oxide (NO) in neurons, essential for learning and memory, but excessive activity causes oxidative/nitrosative stress, contributing to neuropsychiatric disorders. nNOS activation is regulated by calcium-activated calmodulin (CaM) binding and SUMO1 modification at the CaM-binding domain (CaMBD). Our prior studies showed modified CaMBD peptides can modulate NO production in mouse neurons, but their in vivo efficacy, particularly in the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, remains untested. The overlap between SUMO1 and

Qizhi Tongluo capsule improves vascular dementia in rats via integrated metabolomics and molecular mechanism research.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: QiZhi Tongluo (QZTL) capsule is a Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) designed to treat cerebral apoplexy sequelae. TCM considers vascular dementia (VD) as a syndrome secondary to stroke, with memory disorders as the primary manifestation. Therefore, it falls under the category of "stroke" and "dementia" in TCM. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant potential for the QZTL capsule in the treatment of ischemic stroke, as well as in enhancing cognitive function among VD patients. Nevertheless, it mechanism remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The research focu

Profiling fear-extinction learning induced small ncRNAs landscape and identifying miR-29b-3p as a promising biomarker for PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: The pivotal role of small non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in gene expression highlights their potential as therapeutic targets and biomarkers in neuropsychiatric disorders. However, their transcriptional dynamics during fear extinction (EXT) remain poorly understood, limiting insights into disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: We profiled the small ncRNAs transcriptome in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) following EXT training using small RNA array and explored the potential biological functions of differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs. Effects of genetics and sex on adolescent behaviors following neonatal ethanol exposure in BXD recombinant inbred strains.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are the leading preventable neurodevelopmental disorders and two hallmark symptoms of FASD are abnormal behavior, and cognitive and learning deficits. The severity of alcohol's teratogenic effects on the developing brain is influenced by genetics and sex. We previously identified recombinant inbred BXD mouse strains that show differential vulnerability to ethanol-induced cell death in the developing hippocampus, a brain region important in learning and memory. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that strains with increased vulner
