Time course and magnitude of the calcium release induced by bright light in salamander rods.

Changes in fluorescence were measured with an argon ion laser from the outer segments of isolated salamander rods containing the Ca(2+)-sensitive fluorescent dye fluo-5F. When the outer segments were exposed to a 0Ca(2+)/0Na(+) solution designed to minimise surface membrane Ca(2+) fluxes, exposure to intense light from the laser evoked a slow increase in fluorescence, reflecting a light-induced rise in outer segment [Ca(2+)](i). The time course of this slow fluorescence rise could be fitted with the sum of two asymptotic exponential functions of approximately equal amplitude, having time const

Designing green-emissive Cu,N-codoped carbon dots by pyrolysis of aromatic precursors and application in sensing of Fe(iii) and Cr(vi).

Detecting toxic transition metal ions using carbon dots (CDs) as fluorescent probes is efficient and sensitive, yet the rational design of CDs with controlled composition and tunable sensing selectivity remains a key challenge. Herein, we report the one-step, solvent-free pyrolysis synthesis of novel fluorescent Cu,N-co-doped carbon dots (Cu,N-CDs) from two aromatic precursors, p-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) and copper(ii) acetylacetonate (Cu(acac)2), under mild conditions (170 °C, 3 h). The resultant Cu,N-CDs exhibited strong green fluorescence with a maximum emission at 495 nm under excitation

Copper-nickel interaction effects on bioaccumulation and physiological responses of the acid-tolerant microalga Trebouxiophyceae sp. MA-1.

Copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) coexist widely in industrial and municipal wastewater, especially acid mine drainage (AMD). However, research concerning the toxic effects and ecological risks of combined Cu/Ni stress on microalgae is scant, and a systematic comparison of microalgal responses between single and co-exposure conditions has yet to be systematically conducted. An indigenous acid-tolerant AMD microalga, Trebouxiophyceae sp. MA-1, was isolated and examined for its Cu and Ni tolerance and removal in this study. The algal growth was inhibited more severely by Cu than Ni. Co-exposure caused

MXenes@MOFs Hybrid Heterointerfaces for Electrochemical Sensing: Interface Engineering, Progress, Challenges and Opportunities.

MXenes are fascinating 2D-materials with great potential for electrochemical sensing interfaces owing to their high metallic conductivity, rich surface chemistry, and redox activity. MOFs are unique crystalline structures with ultra-large surface areas and rich adsorption and tunable porous active sites, yet their poor electrical conductivity, charge transport efficiency and chemical and mechanical robustness hinder their practical electrochemical sensing feasibility. Recently, integrating MXenes with MOFs enables designing novel hybrid materials with unique interfacial and synergized properti

Biochar and urea enhance phytoremediation of PAH-Pb co-contaminated karst soil: bacterial and metabolic insights.

The remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and lead co-contaminated soils in karst regions remains challenging because of strong soil buffering capacity, complex metal speciation, and the distinct transformation mechanisms of organic pollutants and heavy metals. Although urea and biochar are widely used as soil amendments, their interactive effects on plant-assisted remediation and the associated rhizosphere microbial and metabolic mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, urea and biochar were co-applied in a ryegrass pot experiment to evaluate their synergistic effects on the remedia

Next-generation fluorescent and electrochemical sensors using biomass-derived CQDs.

Ensuring food safety across complex supply chains requires rapid, sensitive, and field-deployable methods for detecting chemical contaminants, microbial hazards, and spoilage indicators in real food matrices. Biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (B-CQDs) offer a sustainable sensing platform because of their tunable photoluminescence, abundant surface functionalities, biocompatibility, and compatibility with low-cost synthesis. Distinct from reviews focused primarily on synthesis or fluorescent detection, this review establishes an integrated structure-property-performance framework linking biom

Enhanced antimony removal in microbial electrolysis cells via modified bio-electrodes: performance and underlying microbial mechanisms.

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) utilizing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) present a promising strategy for remediating antimony (Sb) pollution. Modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) may further improve Sb sequestration. However, the combined removal performance and the underlying metabolic mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, three bio-electrodes-SRB (unmodified control), ZIF-67, and ZIF-67/graphene oxide (ZIF-67/GO)-were constructed and systematically evaluated in MECs for Sb removal, with electrochemical, morphological, and metatranscriptomic analyses of the electrode microbiomes. Mechanistic insights into the molecular selectivity and cotransport dynamics of biodegradable microplastic-derived DOM with cadmium in saturated porous media.

The widespread use of biodegradable plastics (BDPs) results in the release of biodegradable microplastics-derived dissolved organic matter (BMP-DOM) during environmental weathering. The role of its molecular characteristics in regulating the subsurface transport of coexisting heavy metals, however, remains unclear. Here we investigated the cotransport of cadmium (Cd) with DOM derived from three representative BDPs (polybutylene adipate terephthalate, PBAT; polybutylene succinate, PBS; and polylactide, PLA) at two aging stages in saturated porous media. Molecular characterization revealed clear

Root endophytic bacteria from Indocalamus decorus exhibit contrasting patterns in assisted phytoremediation under Pb-Zn contamination.

Heavy metal contamination in lead-zinc tailing areas poses severe environmental risks. Microbe-assisted phytoremediation is a promising eco-friendly strategy, yet the root endophytic bacterial resources of the tolerant bamboo Indocalamus decorus remain largely unexplored. We recovered culturable root endophytic bacteria from I. decorus established for nearly three years in a tailing area, screened isolates for Pb tolerance and plant growth-promoting (PGP)-associated traits, and compared selected isolates in a controlled pot experiment. Of 73 isolates, 28 tolerated Pb across 300-1000 mg L-1, an

Comparative Responses of Invasive and Native Plant Species to Combined Cd and Microplastic Pollution.

The co-occurrence of heavy metal contamination and biodegradable microplastic (polylactic acid, PLA) pollution poses increasing risks to terrestrial plant communities and soil functioning, yet species-specific responses to combined stress remain poorly understood. Cd and microplastics frequently co-occur in agricultural soils, where microplastics can alter cadmium mobility, bioavailability, and transport pathways, potentially modifying metal toxicity and plant stress responses compared with single-pollutant exposure. We investigated the responses of the invasive Bidens pilosa and the native So

Dual-mode fluorescence and electrochemiluminescence sensor based on functionalized EDTA-HOFs for ultrasensitive detection of Hg2.

Leveraging the unique properties of functionalized hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (EDTA-HOFs), this study develops a dual-mode sensor platform-combining fluorescence and electrochemiluminescence-for the swift and sensitive detection of mercury ions (Hg2⁺) in homogeneous solutions. We use tris(4,4'-dicarboxy-2, 2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) [Ru(dcbpy)₃2⁺] as the signal emitter, introducing a heavy metal ion chelator (EDTA) into its structure and synthesizing the hydrogen-bonded organic framework compound EDTA-HOFs through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Thiol-functionalized MOF modified 3D printed monolithic microextraction array for analysis of trace Cd and Pb in human urine.

Controlling the position, size, and shape of pores is a limitation of traditional monolithic preparation methods. The application of 3D printing technology offers high customizability, allowing the precise printing of pore positions, sizes, and shapes according to the designer's 3D model. Herein, by using Projection Microstereolithography (PμSL), we prepared a 3D-printed monolithic array with post-modification of thiol-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF), and combined it with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the online analysis of trace Cd and Pb in human urin

Oryza glumaepatula and calcium oxide nanoparticles enhanced Cr stress tolerance by maintaining antioxidant defense, chlorophyll and gene expression levels in rice.

Chromium (Cr), a potent heavy metal, threatens rice cultivation due to its escalating presence in soil from human activities. Wild rice contains useful genes for phytoremediation; however, it is difficult to use directly for metal mitigation. Here, a single segment substitution line (SSSL), SG001, was developed by crossing O. glumaepatula and Huajingxian74 (HJX) to evaluate the survival ability of plants against Cr. Further, we explored the potential effect of calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO-NPs) (50 μM) to minimize the toxic effect of Cr (100 μM) in rice cultivars, SG001 and HJX. The finding
