In western Europe there has been a striking decline in the incidence of hepatitis B virus infection during the second half of the 1980s. Only a minor part of this decrease is the effect of vaccination, since rather limited vaccination programmes have been introduced in most west European countries. The policies for recommendation of hepatitis B vaccination have differed from north to south in Europe due to different risks of exposure to hepatitis B virus. We compared two digital-image feature-extraction methods for the analysis of microsialograms of the mouse parotid gland following either overfilling, experimentally induced acute sialoadenitis or irradiation. Over the last three decades some American Indian tribes in North America have received attention in the literature as a minority group with unique visual characteristics. Studies on the refractive status of Indians have shown an increase of refractive errors and particularly an abnormally high prevalence, and amount of, with-the-rule astigmatism. Twenty-eight patients with Bartter's syndrome diagnosed during the years 1964-86 and followed for an average of 9.9 years have been reviewed. Their mean age at the time of diagnosis was 32.9 years. The efficacy of antibiotic treatment of 117 patients with erythema chronicum migrans of Lyme disease was evaluated in terms of the necessity for retreatment and the prevention of the late manifestations of Lyme disease. Triazolam 0.25 mg, diazepam 10 mg and placebo were compared in a randomized double-blind trial of oral premedication in 90 patients undergoing minor gynaecological surgery. In a clinical examination of 174 15-year old pupils approximately 62 per cent showed some degree of gingival recession on the labial surfaces of maxillary teeth. A retrospective study was carried out on repeated audio-vestibular examinations in 53 patients with unilateral Meniere's disease, between the vertiginous spells. Most patients showed no change in the caloric response reduction of the afflicted ear in the subsequent tests compared with the first one. The prevalence of contact allergic dermatitis and nonallergic irritant reactions to neomycin sulfate was determined in a large group of young adults who had a noteworthy exposure to topical antibiotics.
