Neuroendocrine tumors are a spectrum of rare and highly heterogeneous neoplasms with distinct functional and biological behavior in relation to location, tumor size, and histological differentiation. Neuroendocrine tumors arise from the neuroendocrine cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system located in almost every organ. Neuroendocrine tumors in the head and neck district are usually reported in sinonasal cavities and larynx. We present the case of a nasopharyngeal small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, which, as far as we know, is the 16th case reported in literature.

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is a benign tumour with an extremely low incidence in children. We report the case of an 11-year-old Caucasian male presenting with recurrent right-sided epistaxis, nasal obstruction and a mass in the right nasal cavity. An initial diagnosis of a nasopharyngeal angiofibroma was considered; however, on detailed histological examination, the mass was found to be an inverted papilloma. This report aims to increase awareness of IP in the paediatric age group, as well as reinforcing the role of endoscopic surgery in the management of this condition.

A PCR for protein D (hpd#3) was used to differentiate nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) from Haemophilus haemolyticus. While 90% of nasopharyngeal specimens and 100% of lower-airway specimens from 84 Indigenous Australian children with bronchiectasis had phenotypic NTHI isolates confirmed as H. influenzae, only 39% of oropharyngeal specimens with phenotypic NTHI had H. influenzae. The nasopharynx is therefore the preferred site for NTHI colonization studies, and NTHI is confirmed as an important lower-airway pathogen.

A 66-year-old male patient presented with rhinocnesmus and mild epistaxis. More than 100 maggots were found in the right nasal cavity by nasal endoscopy. The affected nasal mucosa was erythematous, edematous, ulcerated, and mild bleeding on probing was present. No nasal septal perforation or destruction of nose was noted. Middle and inferior meatus, nasopharyngeal mucosa, orbit, facial skin, oral cavity, gingiva and external auditory canal were normal. The maggot was identified as larvae of Chrysomyia megacephala.

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common incidental finding in otherwise normal Cavalier King Charles spaniels (CKCS). In this study, measurements made on MRI were used to determine whether there was an association between OME and brachycephalic conformation. The results confirm that association and also demonstrate that, in CKCS, greater thickness of the soft palate and reduced nasopharyngeal aperture are significantly associated with OME. These results suggest that auditory tube dysfunction and OME may represent a previously overlooked consequence of brachycephalic conformation in dogs.

UNLABELLED: A 75-year-old long-term male smoker and poorly controlled hypertensive presented with a 3-month history of intermittent epistaxis refractory to cauterisation with silver nitrate. Nasopharyngeal examination revealed a mass in the post nasal space. An urgent endoscopic biopsy confirmed an extraosseous plasmacytoma. Post operative radiotherapy was scheduled. No evidence of recurrence of disease following completion of treatment has been detected during clinical surveillance.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the commonest benign tumor of the salivary glands. It has rarely been reported arising in the nasopharynx. A pleomorphic adenoma originating from the left lateral wall of the nasopharynx was found in a 61-year-old female who presented with nasal obstruction and intermittent epistaxis. It was successfully removed by combined transnasal and transoral surgery under endoscopic visualization. Endoscope-guided surgery may be helpful for the complete resection of benign nasopharyngeal tumors whilst minimizing injury to the Eustachian tube openings or velopharynx.

A newborn suffered immediate neonatal respiratory distress because of an obstructive, soft-tissue nasal mass. Clinical examination revealed a cleft palate with a protruding polypoid mass. CT and MRI showed a heterogeneous nasopharyngeal mass and associated intracranial abnormalities - duplication of the hypophysis and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum. Duplication of the hypophysis is a very rare malformation, only 13 cases having been previously described. 72 cases (74 tumors) of acoustic neuroma pathologically confirmed after operation were analysed with special regard to the misdiagnosis made in their initial seeking for medical advice from ENT doctors. The average period of misdiagnosis was 5.48 years. The disease entities that the acoustic neuroma had been mistaken for were sensorineural hearing loss of unknown origin, idiopathic sudden deafness, tinnitus of unknown origin, cervical osteophytosis, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, etc. Emphasis was placed on the discussion of various causes of misdiagnosis.

Two patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome had polygraphic recordings demonstrated upper airway obstruction and sleep with extremely short sleep latency, severely disturbed nightsleep resulting in sleep deprivation, and excessive daytime sleepiness. BACKGROUND: Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMCa) is a low-grade malignant tumor that occurs primarily in the salivary glands. Its occurrence in the nasopharynx is exceedingly rare. Due to its scarcity, there is currently a lack of standardized treatment protocols, and robust prognostic data remain limited.
