To study the late health effects of nasopharyngeal radium irradiation, a nonconcurrent prospective study was conducted in The Netherlands. Exposed subjects (n = 2510) were treated unilaterally with nasopharyngeal radium irradiation at five ear, nose, and throat clinics between 1945 and 1965 and followed up through February 1, 1985. Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) was assayed in nasopharyngeal secretion (NPS) and serum from 42 infants, hospitalized with acute lower respiratory infection, in El Salvador and the results analyzed in relation to etiology of the infection. In 34 subjects undergoing topical anaesthesia with lidocaine gel (2% xylocaine gel), the concentrations of lidocaine base were measured in repeated venous blood samples. Twenty-three patients (Group I) were given 20 ml of 2% lidocaine gel (400 mg of lidocaine) and six subjects (Group II) 40 ml of 2% lidocaine gel (800 mg of lidocaine) nasopharyngeally, the gel reaching the pharynx being swallowed. Five minutes after administration of the gel, a gastric tube was introduced via the nasal cavity. In six patients (Group III), the bladder was catheterised in addition to insertion of a gastric tube.

Guidelines for the medical therapy of obstructive sleep apnea are difficult to define precisely. While some elegant investigations have been completed, most study populations have been small. A 28-month prospective study of 54 leukemic children was carried out to determine the incidence and type of infection associated with febrile episodes. Fever was caused by infections in 84 of 199 episodes (71%). Two-thirds of the febrile episodes and 57% of the documented infections occurred when leukemic activity was demonstrable.
