Advancing Head and Neck Cancer Therapies: From Conventional Treatments to Emerging Strategies.

Head and neck cancers (HNCs), particularly head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), are among the most aggressive and prevalent malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract. As the incidence of HNCs continues to rise, this cancer type presents a significant public health challenge. Despite conventional treatment options, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the five-year survival rates remain relatively low due to resistance to these therapies, local recurrence, local lymph node metastasis, and in some advanced cases also distant metastasis. Consequently, patients with HNCs

Ectopic cervical thymus in a child: A rare neck mass case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ectopic cervical thymus is a rare congenital anomaly caused by aberrant thymic migration. It commonly presents in the pediatric population as a neck mass and is often misdiagnosed due to its nonspecific clinical features. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a 12-year-old female presenting with a progressively enlarging, painful mass in the left lower cervical region over four months. Clinical examination revealed a firm, mildly tender mass inferior to the left thyroid lobe and medial to the carotid sheath. Laboratory investigations, including complete blood c

Cetuximab and Paclitaxel Drug Response in Head and Neck Tumor Stem Cells.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is one of the most common types of cancer in the world, characterized by resistance to conventional therapies and an unfavorable prognosis due to the presence of tumor stem cells (TSCs). TSCs are cell subpopulations with high potential for invasion, migration, and metastasis, being responsible for the initiation and dissemination of cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of treatments with cetuximab and paclitaxel, alone and in combination, in TSCs from oral cavity (SCC-28) and hypopharynx (FADU) cancer cell lines. In addition, the influence of the gene an

Deep Neck Infection Following Transesophageal Echocardiography: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Deep neck infections (DNIs) are rare but potentially life-threatening complications of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). DNIs can lead to severe outcomes if not promptly diagnosed and treated. This case report describes a 70-year-old male who developed a DNI 3 days after undergoing TEE. He presented with fever, sore throat, and chills. The initial chest X-ray (CXR) in the emergency department was interpreted as negative. However, a computed tomography (CT) scan performed after admission due to persistent neck symptoms confirmed the presence of a retropharyngeal abscess and emphysema. A r

Competing endogenous RNAs in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: a review.

Our understanding of RNA biology has evolved with recent advances in research from it being a non-functional product to molecules of the genome with specific regulatory functions. Competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), which has gained prominence over time as an essential part of post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism, is one such example. The ceRNA biology hypothesis states that coding RNA and non-coding RNA co-regulate each other using microRNA (miRNA) response elements. The ceRNA components include long non-coding RNAs, pseudogene and circular RNAs that exert their effect by interacting wit

Cumulative sum analysis for evaluating learning curve of endoscopic lateral neck dissection.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic lateral neck dissection (LND) can be a scarless procedure if a surgeon has performed a sufficient number of operations to become skilled at the techniques involved. Here, we examine the learning curve for a surgeon who performed 53 endoscopic LND procedures via chest approach. METHODS: Surgical outcomes for 53 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma who underwent endoscopic LND via chest approach between February 2017 and November 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. The surgeon's learning curve was evaluated using a cumulative sum graphic model (CUSUM). RESULTS: A CU

Superselective Versus Selective Neck Dissection in the Treatment of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Superselective lateral neck dissection (SSND), defined as dissection of 2 or less contiguous lateral cervical nodal levels, has emerged as a treatment option for metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), in place of a selective neck dissection (SND). There are few studies exploring outcomes of SSND compared to SND in this context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single institution retrospective study. All patients who were diagnosed with PTC and had a lateral neck dissection from 2019 to 2022 were reviewed. Patient demographics and outcomes were compared. RESULTS: A total o

Retrospective analysis of radiological investigation of surgically excised head and neck lipomas.

PURPOSE: Differentiating benign lipomas from malignant causes is challenging and preoperative investigative guidelines are not well-defined. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively identify cases of head and neck lipomas that were surgically resected over a 5-year period and to identify the radiological modality chosen and features discussed in the final report. Multidisciplinary outcomes and pathology reports were examined with a view to identifying high risk features of a lipoma to aid in future risk stratification. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of pathology characteristics,

Interdisciplinary plastic and reconstructive surgery of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Squamous cell carcinomas are the most common malignancies in the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Even in the age of the most modern drug treatment methods, radical resection of these tumors is and currently remains the therapeutic gold standard. The loss of anatomical structures associated with surgery inevitably increases the functional deficits caused by the tumor itself. In this context, the extent of functional deficits is largely determined by the extent of resection. Complete organ resections, such as glossectomy, complete palate resection, laryngectomy, or transverse pharyngo-laryngec

Identification of new head and neck squamous cell carcinoma molecular imaging targets.

OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative fluorescence imaging (FI) of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is performed to identify tumour-positive surgical margins, currently using epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) as imaging target. EGFR, not exclusively present in HNSCC, may result in non-specific tracer accumulation in normal tissues. We aimed to identify new potential HNSCC FI targets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Publicly available transcriptomic data were collected, and a biostatistical method (Transcriptional Adaptation to Copy Number Alterations (TACNA)-profiling) was applied. Role of elective neck dissection in cT2N0 maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma.

Our objective was to examine the impact of elective neck dissection (END) on the prognosis of patients with cT2N0 maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma (MS-SCC) and to determine factors that predict the occurrence of occult metastasis in this patient population. A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from the SEER database. Patients with cT2N0 MS-SCC were included in the study and divided into two groups: those who received END and those who did not. The impact of END on disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) was assessed using propensity score matching. Multiva

Immune Escape Strategies in Head and Neck Cancer: Evade, Resist, Inhibit, Recruit.

Head and neck cancers (HNCs) arise from the mucosal lining of the aerodigestive tract and are often associated with alcohol use, tobacco use, and/or human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Over 600,000 new cases of HNC are diagnosed each year, making it the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Historically, treatments have included surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, and while these treatments are still the backbone of current therapy, several immunotherapies have recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in HNC. The role of the immune system in tumorigenesis and
