Anatomical observations of the rat cerebellar nodulus after 24 hr of spaceflight.

Exposure to microgravity causes alterations in postural, locomotor and oculomotor functions. The vestibular abnormalities experienced by astronauts entail immediate reflex motor responses, including postural illusions, sensations of rotation, nystagmus, dizziness and vertigo, as well as space motion sickness. Adaptation to the microgravity environment usually occurs within one week, and a subsequent re-adaptation period of several months is often required upon return to Earth. Some astronauts experience recurrences of dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, as well as marked disturbances in postural

Motor and sensory demyelinating mononeuropathy multiplex (multifocal motor and sensory demyelinating neuropathy): a separate entity or a variant of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy?

We report 16 patients with motor and sensory demyelinating mononeuropathy multiplex (MSDMM) or multifocal motor and sensory demyelinating neuropathy (MMSDN). These patients had the clinical pattern of motor and sensory mononeuropathy multiplex, electrophysiological evidence of demyelination including conduction block, and segmental demyelination in the sural nerve biopsy. Sixty per cent of patients had high CSF protein. Eighty per cent of patients showed good responsiveness to steroid treatment. Unlike multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN), MSDMM is characterized by a shorter course, sensory defic

Olivocerebellar axon regeneration and target reinnervation following dissociated Schwann cell grafts in surgically injured cerebella of adult rats.

The ability of Schwann cells to induce the regeneration of severed olivocerebellar and Purkinje cell axons across an injury up to their deafferented targets was tested by transplanting freshly dissociated cells from newborn rat sciatic nerves into surgically lesioned adult cerebella. The grafted glial cells consistently filled the lesion gap and migrated into the host parenchyma. Transected olivocerebellar axons vigorously regenerated into the graft, where their growth pattern and direction followed the arrangement of Schwann cell bundles. Although some of these axons terminated within the tra

Neuropathic implications of prosthodontic treatment.

Associated with prosthodontic procedures, there may be the development of a chronic pain state caused by injury to peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve. Neuropathic pains have not been discussed in the prosthodontic literature and yet are becoming increasingly common, especially in relation to the placement of implant prostheses. This article reviews the pathophysiologic and clinical features associated with neuropathic pain after dental procedures (traumatic neuralgia). The prosthodontist should become aware of neuropathic pain as a possible complication of treatment and informed conse

Plasticity in human somatosensory thalamus as a result of deafferentation.

Experimental studies indicate that deafferentation results in reorganization of the somatosensory map at various levels of the CNS, such that the representation of a body part adjacent to a region that is denervated expands into the deafferented area. Recent data suggest that in the human this occurs at the cortical level, but subcortical structures have not been systematically investigated. To test the hypothesis that the human thalamus is capable of significant reorganization as a result of changes in afferent input, microelectrode recording and stimulating techniques were used to define tha

[Innervation anomalies--mechanism of adaptation or embryonal malformation?].

After injuries innervationanomalies are observest. Are these anomalies mechanismen of adaption or an embryological malformation, is a still mansverst question. This paper tries some contributions to the answer. The use of modern muscleenzymhistochemistry in connection of histological findings of nerves in certain levels gives assertions on anomalies of innervation and mechanisms of reinnervation. After 14, 28, 56 and 112 days tissues of nerves and muscle from 66 female WISTAR-rats were investigated after various lesions. We have found in 15 not operated rats that the so called typegrouping can

Drinking behavior and motor function in rat pups depleted of brain dopamine during development.

The ability of rat pups depleted of brain dopamine (DA) at either 3 or 15 days of age to increase fluid intake in response to intracellular dehydration was studied. Despite near-total depletions of striatal DA, animals depleted at either age ingested normal amounts of fluid even as soon as 3-7 days after incurring the brain damage. The effects of DA receptor blockade on ingestion and motor function were also studied. Haloperidol had markedly different effects as a function of the age at which the depletions were sustained. Weanlings that were depleted of DA at 3 days of age failed to exhibit t

Temporal synchrony promotes motor recovery and ipsilesional cortical reorganization in BCI-based stroke rehabilitation: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic mechanisms of brain-computer interface (BCI) rehabilitation remain partially understood. Specifically, it is unclear whether functional gains are driven primarily by active neural engagement or strictly by the temporal contingency between motor intention and sensory feedback. This study aimed to deconstruct the BCI paradigm to isolate the specific contributions of these core components to functional recovery and cortical reorganization in subacute stroke. METHODS: Seventy-seven subacute stroke patients were randomized into three intervention arms. Group C (synchron

Modulation of human primary motor cortex plasticity during proactive and retroactive interference between motor practice and paired associative stimulation.

Proactive and retroactive interference have been widely demonstrated behaviorally, but their neurophysiological effects have rarely been compared within the same experimental framework. This study compared the primary motor cortex (M1) plasticity responses when motor practice (MP) was performed before or after paired associative stimulation (PAS25) and explored whether these responses were accompanied by changes in intracortical inhibition. A within-subject design was employed. A right-hand precision grip task with real-time electromyographic feedback was used to examine practice-related refin

Advances in neuropharmacology: Innovative drug strategies targeting synaptic plasticity, neuroinflammation, and ion channel regulation for future CNS treatments.

As our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying central nervous system (CNS) disorders expands, neuropharmacology is undergoing a paradigm shift. Despite the increasing burden of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases, challenges such as blood-brain barrier (BBB) impermeability, drug resistance, and complex pathophysiology continue to limit effective therapeutic development. This review highlights key emerging targets, including ion channel regulation, neuroinflammation, and synaptic plasticity, as important entry points for next-generation neurotherapeutics.

Atlas of human cerebellar aging: nonlinear molecular trajectories reveal multidimensional mechanisms underlying cognitive and motor function regulation.

The cerebellum, traditionally recognized for motor coordination, may also contribute to cognitive and emotional regulation, as recent evidence indicates. However, the molecular and structural changes in the human cerebellum during healthy aging remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the molecular trajectories and structural alterations in the human cerebellum across the adult lifespan (20-80 years) by integrating cerebella transcriptomic data from 456 non-disease brains and MRI structural neuroimaging data from 264 disease-free subjects. Fuzzy clustering analyses unco

Effects of strength and balance training on the structure of the aging brain.

BACKGROUND: While it is established that motor training induces structural changes in the brains of young adults, structural adaptations in aging brains are less studied. METHODS: This randomized controlled study investigated the impact of long-term strength and balance training on the structural plasticity in 60 elderly adults (64 - 82 years old, 70.6 ± 4.7) using multi-modal neuroimaging. We compared the effects of three months of strength training to balance training of the same duration and to a passive control group. Neuroplasticity after stroke: Adaptive and maladaptive mechanisms in evidence-based rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability and persistent motor deficits. While neuroplasticity drives post-stroke recovery, clinical rehabilitation does not always effectively utilize this mechanism. Importantly, adaptive plasticity promotes restitution through the reorganization of affected neural networks, thereby restoring original motor patterns. In contrast, maladaptive plasticity may reinforce compensatory strategies and limit recovery of normal motor control. This review examines physiotherapy strategies that stimulate neuroplasticity after

The Astrocyte Clock Controls Circadian Perineuronal Net Remodeling, Synapse Strength and Learning Behavior.

The circadian clock controls a vast array of cellular and organismal functions, from the molecular scale to behavior. While each cell is regimented by a cell-autonomous clock, few studies in the brain have dissected the circuit and behavioral contributions of cell-specific clocks. Relatedly, astrocytes are now known to play key roles in regulating synaptic function, circuit activity and behavior, but whether these functions are guided by astrocyte-autonomous clocks is unknown. Here, we report that post-natal deletion of the critical circadian clock gene Bmal1 in astrocytes, which abrogates cor

Emerging Roles of Postbiotics in Gut-Brain-Microbiome Axis Modulation and Neurobiological Pathways of Chronic Stress-Related Brain Dysfunction.

Chronic psychological stress disrupts the gut-brain-microbiome axis (GBMA) through gut dysbiosis, intestinal and blood-brain barrier disruption, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation, and neuroinflammation, collectively impairing neurotransmitter signaling and neuroplasticity. Addressing these interconnected pathological processes requires therapeutic strategies capable of acting across multiple nodes of the GBMA simultaneously. Postbiotics, defined as preparations of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confer a health benefit on the host, have emerged as pr

Ecdysterone and High-Intensity Interval Training Mitigate Alzheimer's Pathology in Rats: Impacts on Depression, Synaptic Plasticity, and Neuroinflammation.

The study focuses on the role of neuroinflammation and impaired synaptic plasticity in the progression of Alzheimer's disease caused by amyloid-beta accumulation. It examines the potential therapeutic effects of Ecdysterone, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and high-intensity interval training, which may also support brain health. The primary goal is to assess how Ecdy and HIIT, alone or combined, influence depressive-like behavior, synaptic function, inflammation, and Aβ buildup in a rat model of AD. Ten days after Aβ administration, treatments began with Ecdy (10 m

Modulation of netrin-1/DCC signaling pathway by Jiawei Kongsheng Zhenzhong Pill improves synaptic structural plasticity in PSD rats.

Jiawei Kongsheng Zhenzhong Pill(JKZP) is based on Kongsheng Zhenzhong Pill contained in the Tang Dynasty's "Thousand Golden Prescriptions," which exhibited good anti-ischemic and antidepressant effects in the previous study. However, its specific effects on post-stroke depression (PSD) and the mechanism are not clear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of JKZP in the treatment of PSD and related mechanisms. The decoction of JKZP was first analyzed for its medicinal chemical composition and screened for representative components of JKZP. The Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) meth

Neural mechanisms underlying the after-effects of repetitive paired-pulse TMS with Β tACS on the human primary motor cortex.

We previously reported that repetitive paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS; rPPS) synchronized to the peak phase of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at the β frequency induced long-lasting after-effects on primary motor cortex (M1) with less inter-individual variability compared with rPPS alone. Here, we investigated the plasticity mechanisms underlying combined stimulation effects using paired-pulse TMS paradigms. rPPS was applied to the peak phase of β tACS (rPPS-tACS-peak) or sham tACS (rPPS alone), or tACS was delivered without rPPS (tACS alone). μ-Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Induces Phasic Entrainment and Plastic Facilitation of Corticospinal Excitability.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been proposed to modulate neural activity through two primary mechanisms: entrainment and neuroplasticity. The current study aimed to probe both of these mechanisms in the context of the sensorimotor μ-rhythm using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG) to assess entrainment of corticospinal excitability (CSE) during stimulation (i.e., online) and immediately following stimulation, as well as neuroplastic aftereffects on CSE and μ EEG power. Thirteen participants received three sessions of stimulation. Ea

Hippocampal microstructural changes following electroconvulsive therapy in severe depression.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) induces hippocampal volume increases in depressed patients, potentially reflecting neuroplasticity. We hypothesized that Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI) could provide in vivo evidence of hippocampal neuroplasticity following ECT. This longitudinal study evaluated 43 depressed patients undergoing ECT and 24 controls. MRI and clinical assessments were performed at baseline (V1), after 5 sessions (V2), and post-treatment (V3). Evaluations included a 3 T MR-scan with 3DT1-weighted and multi-shell diffusion (b = 200/1500/2500 s/mm², 30/45/6
