Objectives: Whether PANS (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome) and PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection) represent true clinical entities is debated and data for a characteristic phenotype are still controversial. In this study, we aim to characterize clinical, neuropsychological, and biochemical aspects in a sample of PANS and PANDAS patients. Methods: Patients fulfilling a clinical diagnosis of PANS or PANDAS from 2014 to 2017 were enrolled. Neurological and psychiatric examination and biochemical and instrumental assessm

IMPORTANCE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects 2-3% of the population with often disabling obsessions and compulsions. Despite its high heritability, genetic studies of OCD have lagged other psychiatric disorders, particularly in understanding the role of rare genetic variants.
OBJECTIVE: To identify rare coding genetic variants contributing to OCD risk and examine genetic overlap with chronic tic disorders (CTD) and other psychiatric conditions.
DESIGN: Family-based and case-control whole-exome sequencing (WES) study.
SETTINGS: WES data were aggregated from 11 independent cohorts

BACKGROUND: Scalp acupuncture and brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial electrical stimulation, have shown promise in the management of mental disorders. However, the identification of precise stimulation targets remains a critical bottleneck. Pinpointing brain regions associated with mental disorders is essential for optimizing the efficacy of these scalp-based therapies.
METHODS: Using Neurosynth Compose, we performed large-scale coordinate-based meta-analyses to identify potential targets for nine mental disorders: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, an

BACKGROUND: Many patients with panic disorder meet criteria for at least one other diagnosis, most commonly other anxiety or mood disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the best empirically supported psychotherapy for panic disorder. There is now evidence indicating that cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder yields positive benefits upon comorbid disorders.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to examine the predictors of broad dimensions of psychopathology in panic disorder after cognitive-behavioral therapy.
METHODS: Two hundred patients affected by panic disorder were treated

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine distribution and diversities of psychiatric comorbidities in children and adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in terms of age groups, sex, and ADHD subtype.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included 6-18 year old children and adolescents from Turkey (N=108; 83 boys, 25 girls) diagnosed with ADHD. All comorbid diagnoses were determined based on the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version assessment.
RESULTS: 96.3% of the cases were found to have at least one ps

This study examined the relationship between sleep disturbance and the course of anxiety disorders in primary care patients. Participants were part of the Primary Care Anxiety Project (PCAP), a naturalistic, longitudinal study of anxiety disorders in primary care. Participants completed an intake evaluation and follow-up assessments at 6 months, 12 months, and annually thereafter. Only participants with sleep data at intake were included in the current study (n=533). The majority (74%) reported experiencing sleep disturbance at intake. Those with a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GA

Previous research has indicated that reports of panic attacks are associated with a different set of symptoms to reports of generalized anxiety. The present two studies attempted to extend these findings to specific (situational) fears. In Study 1, 55 subjects with panic disorder were compared on their symptom profile during their panic attacks to 65 subjects with other anxiety disorders [simple phobia, social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)] during response to their feared cue. The results indicated that, compared to subjects with other anxiety disorders, subjects with panic di

The term 'addiction' was traditionally used in relation to centrally active substances, such as cocaine, alcohol, or nicotine. Addiction is not a unitary construct but rather incorporates a number of features, such as repetitive engagement in behaviours that are rewarding (at least initially), loss of control (spiralling engagement over time), persistence despite untoward functional consequences, and physical dependence (evidenced by withdrawal symptoms when intake of the substance diminishes). It has been suggested that certain psychiatric disorders characterized by maladaptive, repetitive be

BACKGROUND: Mothers with preterm infants are more likely to have perinatal mood disorders than mothers carrying to term, have problems breastfeeding, and may be dissatisfied with the role of being a mother. This study was conducted to investigate and compare the effects of obsessive-compulsive (OCD) behaviour and breastfeeding self-efficacy on satisfaction with the role of motherhood. in the postpartum period in mothers of preterm or term infants.
METHODS: The descriptive, case-control, analytical study was conducted with 175 mothers of late preterm and 175 mothers of term. The descriptive In

Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) is a generalist clinical management approach for borderline personality disorder that incorporates common ingredients of good standard care for any psychiatric diagnosis with what works from prevailing specialist psychotherapies. Similar to all validated therapies for BPD, it relies on a specified formulation of the disorder' symptoms as arising from interpersonal hypersensitivity, to dynamically describe typical patterns of daily self- and interpersonal issues that drive the instability that defines the general personality dysfunction characteristic of the di

Neuroimaging-based approaches have been extensively applied to study mental illness in recent years and have deepened our understanding of both cognitively healthy and disordered brain structure and function. Recent advancements in machine learning techniques have shown promising outcomes for individualized prediction and characterization of patients with psychiatric disorders. Studies have utilized features from a variety of neuroimaging modalities, including structural, functional, and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data, as well as jointly estimated features from multiple modalities,

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders increase risk of future cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, even after controlling for confounds including smoking, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status, and irrespective of a history of medical disorders. While impaired vagal function, indicated by reductions in heart rate variability (HRV), may be one mechanism linking anxiety disorders to CVD, prior studies have reported inconsistent findings highlighting the need for meta-analysis.
METHOD: Studies comparing resting-state HRV recordings in patients with an anxiety disorder as a primary diagnosis and hea

A controversial issue that was debated for DSM-IV is whether body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)--a preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance--can be psychotic. BDD is classified separately from its delusional counterpart (delusional disorder, somatic type) in DSM-IV, but does it have a psychotic variant that overlaps with, and may even be the same diagnostic entity as, its delusional disorder variant? One hundred consecutive patients with DSM-III-R-defined BDD or its delusional variant were assessed with a semistructured interview, the Structured Clinical Inverview for DSM-III-R, and a m

Body dysmorphic disorder is a common psychiatric disease; its respective prevalence is 2% in the general population, 3.3% in tertiary students, 7.4% among adolescent and adult psychiatric in-patients, and above 10% in patients of cosmetic surgery or dermatology. The most important symptom of the disease is the distorted perception of bodily appearance that leads to low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, social isolation and compulsive behaviours. The disease usually begins during adolescence (average age at onset: 16.7 years), the symptoms have a rather deleterious impact on social relationship

AIM: To facilitate the diagnosis of Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) in children, we described the clinical features of a PANS cohort and analyzed whether immunotherapy could shorten the symptom duration.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of children with PANS at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and categorized them into two groups on the basis of whether they received immunotherapy to compare symptom duration.
RESULTS: Forty-two patients were included. Thirty-three children (76.2 %) had infection within 4 weeks before onset

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Repeated checking results in large reductions in metamemory variables (confidence, details, and vividness). It has been suggested that the underlying mechanism is gradual automatization. At the same time, individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are reluctant to automatize routine processes. The aim was to investigate whether high responsibility for potential harm, typical of OCD, would attenuate the effects of repeated checking on metamemory variables and automatization.
METHODS: One hundred seventy-five participants were initially provided with a cover

The oxytocin system has been thought to contribute to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Few studies, only involving adults, have investigated this hypothesis and have found inconsistent results regarding oxytocin system activity and OCD. We investigated whether salivary oxytocin concentrations differed between children and adolescents with and without OCD and qualified our comparative analysis by investigating the possible covariates age, pubertal stage, and sex. Participants included 113 children and adolescents (8-17 years) with OCD and 88 children and adolescents without any previous or
