Shock wave therapy (SWT) stimulates angiogenesis and osteogenesis. SWT is commonly used to treat soft tissue musculoskeletal conditions such as fasciopathies and tendinopathies. Recent basic science and clinical data suggest that SWT can also be used to treat disorders of bone. Nonunions, avascular necrosis, and delayed healing of stress fractures have all been successfully treated with SWT. OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of avascular necrosis of the maxilla secondary to oral bisphosphonates.
METHODS: Case report and review of the world literature concerning avascular necrosis as a result of bisphosphonate therapy.
CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman presented with unilateral nasal obstruction, swelling of the cheek and an ulcerating lesion of the upper alveolus. She had a past medical history of osteoporosis, for which she took oral bisphosphonates. Investigation revealed necrosis of the maxilla, and avascular necrosis secondary to oral bisphosphonates was diagnosed.

We describe a patient with spontaneous multiple extensor tendon ruptures that were caused by a displaced fragment of the lunate in advanced Kienböck's disease. Avascular necrosis, which most commonly affects the femoral head, is a well-recognized entity in orthopedic surgery. Maxillofacial surgeons have recently recognized that a similar process may also be at work in the temporomandibular joint because of the involvement of the mandibular condyle. Avascular necrosis of the mandibular condyle in association with sickle cell anemia is an infrequent finding. In this report, a patient with avascular necrosis of the mandibular condyle in the late stage causing fibrous ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint in sickle cell anemia is presented.

Twenty-one patients with advanced Kienböck's disease were treated by implantation of a tendon roll and temporary partial fixation of the wrist. There were 13 women and eight men. Their ages at the time of operation ranged from 24 to 72 years. According to Alexander and Lichtman's classification, 12 patients were stage IIIb and nine stage IV.
