Novel type of references for BMI aligned for onset of puberty - using the QEPS growth model.

OBJECTIVES: Despite inter-individual variations in pubertal timing, growth references are conventionally constructed relative to chronological age (C-age). Thus, they are based on reference populations containing a mix of prepubertal and pubertal individuals, making them of limited use for detecting abnormal growth during adolescence. Recently we developed new types of height and weight references, with growth aligned to age at onset of the pubertal growth spurt (P-age). Here, we aim to develop a corresponding reference for pubertal BMI. METHODS: The QEPS-height and weight models were used to

The Influence of Adolescent Sport Participation on Body Mass Index Tracking and the Association between Body Mass Index and Self-Esteem over a Three-Year Period.

This study aimed to (1) investigate gender-specific characteristics associated with low sport participation among UK adolescents, and (2) assess gender-specific BMI tracking, and gender-specific associations between BMI and self-esteem based on different levels of adolescent sport participation. Participants were 9046 (4523 female) UK adolescents. At 11- and 14 years self-esteem was self-reported and BMI was calculated from objectively measured height and weight. At 11- years sport participation was parent-reported. Gender-specific sport participation quartile cut-off values categorised boys a

Screening for hypertension in young people with obesity: Feasibility in the real life.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Screening for pediatric hypertension (HTN) is based on several measurements of blood pressure (BP) in different visits. We aimed to assess its feasibility in outpatient youths with overweight/obesity (OW/OB) in terms of adherence to two-repeated measurements of BP and to show the features of youths who missed the follow-up and the predictive role of clinical and/or anamnestic features on confirmed HTN. METHODS AND RESULTS: Six hundred, eighty-eight youths (9-17 years) with OW/OB, consecutively recruited, underwent a first measurement of BP. Those exhibiting BP levels withi

Change in weight category among youth early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remote learning and shelter-in-place orders during the COVID-19 pandemic are associated with obesity risk factors such as decreased physical activity, altered routines and sleep schedules, increased screen time, and non-nutritious food choices. The objective of this brief report is to describe change in weight category 3-6 months after the onset of the pandemic in a cohort of 4509 low-income youth. Inclusion criteria were youth aged 2-17 years with weight and height measure in a large primary care network between 1 January and 30 March 2020 (Q1), designated as pre-COVID period; and 1 June-30 S

Postnatal Serum Total Thyroxine Level Associated with Short- and Long-Term Anthropometric Outcomes in Very Preterm Infants.

Thyroxine (T4) importantly regulates the growth of newborns. Compared to fetuses with equivalent gestational ages, very preterm infants (VPIs) often experience relatively low thyroxinemia, with a normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration < 10 μIU/mL. However, there is continued debate regarding postnatal thyroxine supplementation for VPIs with normal TSH and transitionally low thyroxinemia. Little research has explored the role of the postnatal total T4 (TT4) serum concentration on the growth of VPIs. In this study, we aim to clarify whether the postnatal thyroxine concentration i

Contribution of modifiable risk factors on the burden of diabetes among women in reproductive age-group in India: a population based cross-sectional study.

The diabetes burden is rapidly accelerating in India, particularly since the 2000s. We explore the burden and contribution of modifiable risk factors in diabetes among reproductive women across geographic regions of India. The study uses data from the National Family Health Survey in India 2015-2016, Census of India 2011, and World Population Prospects 2015. We computed Population Attributable Fractions and the number of total and estimated avoidable diabetic cases across regions. The prevalence of diabetic cases in India were 24.4 per 1000 women, varying across geographic regions. Diabetes af

Exercise During Pregnancy—Effects on Birth Weight and on the Risks of Gestational Diabetes and Preterm Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a good time to motivate women to implement health-promoting behaviors in their everyday lives. There is no official German-language guideline for the counseling of pregnant women by professionals involved in their care. The goal of this review is, therefore, to discuss the links between exercise and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), low birth weight, and prematurity. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a systematic search of PubMed and the Web of Science. The articles included in the evaluation were reports of randomized controlled tria

Screening for diabetes in asymptomatic children: A simple and efficient method.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Type 2 diabetes has become an important cause of diabetes in children. Since most children with type 2 diabetes are asymptomatic, a screening method is needed. However, physicians are required in the screening methods recommended by professional associations. We aimed to develop a simple and efficient screening method for children with diabetes. METHODS: A nationwide survey was conducted, which included 2,270,496 seventh-grade students. Students with two abnormal results in sequential urinalyses were given a fasting blood test. Three screening methods were developed. RESU

[Slipped capital femoral epiphysis in children].

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is among the most common causes of hip problems in childhood and adolescence. Its incidence is increasing due to rising childhood obesity. There are three different types of SCFE, the rarest of which is the acute traumatic slip. Early identification and urgent surgical treatment are necessary to minimise the risk of complications such as avascular necrosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: An overweight 12-year-old boy visited the emergency department complaining of pain in the left hip after falling from his scooter. The patient was unable to bear weight

Serum BDNF as an integrative neuro-immunometabolic marker in adolescent polycystic ovary syndrome: divergent dietary and inflammatory associations across weight phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adolescence is characterized by hormonal imbalance, low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) regulates energy homeostasis and neuroimmune signaling and may act as a neuroimmunometabolic integrator in PCOS. METHODS: Forty adolescent females with PCOS (26 normal weight and 14 with overweight and obesity) were evaluated. Serum BDNF, omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA), uric acid, metabolic and hormonal indices, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were measured. Dietary intake and ph

Classification and Severity Assessment of Obesity in Clinical Risk Prediction of Multimorbidity Trajectories.

Obesity is a key risk factor for chronic disease and multimorbidity, yet variation in how obesity is defined may influence risk estimation in clinical practise. Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) are better at capturing fat distribution than body mass index (BMI) and may have a role in obesity related multimorbidity prediction. To examine multimorbidity risk across obesity groups classified using BMI in combination with WHR/WHtR. A UK Biobank cohort free of comorbidity at baseline (n = 179 876) was followed for incident first long-term condition and multimorbidity (≥ 2 o

Changes in appetitive traits and binge-eating following lifestyle intervention in 7-14-year-olds: a 3-year follow-up.

Lifestyle interventions tend to reduce disordered eating short-term in children, but little is known about long-term changes. This study aimed to investigate changes in appetitive traits and episodes of overeating and binge-eating up to three years after a 10-week multicomponent lifestyle camp in 7-14-year-olds. Participants were referred to the lifestyle camp due to overweight/obesity, and/or psychosocial challenges. The Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) and selected items from the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) were completed at baseline, after camp, and at o
