Maternal-fetal relationships in the parathyroidectomized rat. Intestinal calcium transport, serum calcium, immunoreactive parathyroid hormone and calcitonin.

We studied the role of the parathyroids in the adaptation of intestinal Ca transport that occurs during pregnancy, and whether maternal hypoparathyroidism causes fetal hyperparathyroidism. Serum Ca of pregnant parathyroidectomized (PTX) rats was significantly greater than nonpregnant, PTX animals. Intestinal active Ca transport was increased 2.1- and 2.2-fold by pregnancy in intact and PTX rats, respectively. Serum levels of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (PTH) were nondetectable in PTX-pregnant rats. Fetuses from PTX rats appeared grossly normal. The serum PTH was not different in fetuses

Anti-beta adrenoreceptor blockade activity of plasma ultrafiltrate in two uraemic patients: effect of parathyroidectomy.

A possible interaction between d-1 propranolol and hyperparathyroid plasma ultrafiltrate on guinea pig auricles has been studied in "in vitro" experiments. Plasma ultrafiltrates have been samples in two patients on chronci haemodialysis before (pre-PTx) and after (post-PTx) parathyroidectomy. A significant inhibition of propranolol depressant activity on cardiac contractile strength has been observed in the presence of pre-PTx plasma ultrafiltrates. On the contrary, no such inhibition was noted in the presence of post-PTx plasma ultrafiltrates.

The Circadian Clock Is Sustained in the Thyroid Gland of VIP Receptor 2 Deficient Mice.

VIP/VPAC2-receptor signaling is crucial for functioning of the circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) since the lack results in disrupted synchrony between SCN cells and altered locomotor activity, body temperature, hormone secretion and heart rhythm. Endocrine glands, including the thyroid, show daily oscillations in clock gene expression and hormone secretion, and SCN projections target neurosecretory hypothalamic thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)-releasing hormone cells. The aim of the study was to gain knowledge of mechanisms important for regulation of the thyroid clock by e

p21(WAF1) and transforming growth factor-alpha mediate dietary phosphate regulation of parathyroid cell growth.

BACKGROUND: The parathyroid (PT) hyperplasia induced by renal failure can be further enhanced by high dietary phosphate (P) or completely abolished by P restriction. To identify potential mechanisms mediating these opposing effects of dietary P on PT growth, this study first focused on p21(WAF1) (p21) because high P reduces while low P enhances serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, whose potent antiproliferative properties result from the induction of p21. In addition to reducing p21, high P-induced PT growth could result from increased PT expression of the growth promoter transforming growth factor-

Primary Pituitary Carcinoids Do Not Exist: A Reappraisal in the Era of Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumours.

The World Health Organization classification of pituitary tumours, published in 2022, supported a change in the terminology from "pituitary adenoma" to "pituitary neuroendocrine tumour" (PitNET). The neuroendocrine cells represent an integral part of the diffuse neuroendocrine system, including, among others, thyroid C cells, the parathyroid chief cells, and the anterior pituitary. Normal and neoplastic adenohypophyseal neuroendocrine cells have light microscopic, ultrastructural features and an immunoprofile compatible with the neuroendocrine cells and neuroendocrine tumours from other organs

Evaluating a shortened interpretation criterion for intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism: 5-minutes criterion in primary hyperparathyroidism and intraoperative algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Most criteria require a parathyroid hormone (PTH) decline of ≥50% within 10 minutes after excision of the gland during surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism. The aim was to evaluate a model allowing earlier prediction of cure. METHODS: One thousand eighteen patients with primary hyperparathyroidism were included. A ≥50% decline from baseline within 10 minutes after excision intraoperatively predicted complete removal of hypersecreting tissue. The data were reanalyzed regarding a criterion, requiring a ≥50% decline after 5 minutes. Based on the data and the present literature, an

[Zuckerkandl's tubercle. Location, shape and dimensions].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Although Zuckerkandl's tubercle is not known by many head and neck surgeons, it is a fundamental surgical anatomical detail, already described in the nineteenth century. Its detection is of great importance as the reference in the search for the recurrent nerve and superior parathyroid gland. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We designed a prospective study to analyse the posterolateral border of thyroid lobes, looking for this tubercle. We included 107 thyroidectomies performed by the same surgeon; 88 were total thyroidectomies (82.24%) and 19 hemithyroidectomies (17.75%), wit

Beta-catenin deficiency causes DiGeorge syndrome-like phenotypes through regulation of Tbx1.

DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) is a common genetic disease characterized by pharyngeal apparatus malformations and defects in cardiovascular, craniofacial and glandular development. TBX1 is the most likely candidate disease-causing gene and is located within a 22q11.2 chromosomal deletion that is associated with most cases of DGS. Here, we show that canonical Wnt-beta-catenin signaling negatively regulates Tbx1 expression and that mesenchymal inactivation of beta-catenin (Ctnnb1) in mice caused abnormalities within the DGS phenotypic spectrum, including great vessel malformations, hypoplastic pulmona

Therapeutic use of calcimimetics.

It has long been recognized that the secretion of PTH by chief cells in the parathyroid gland is regulated by extracellular ionized calcium. The molecular mechanism by which extracellular Ca2+ performs this feat was deduced by the cloning of the extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) in 1993 in the laboratories of Brown and Hebert. The CaSR is a G protein-coupled cell surface receptor that belongs to family 3 of the GPCR superfamily. The CaSR senses the extracellular ionic activity of the divalent minerals Ca2+ and Mg2+ and translates this information, via a complex array of cellular si

Facio-auriculo-vertebral sequence in association with DiGeorge sequence, Rokitansky sequence, and Dandy-Walker malformation: case report.

Extreme variability of expression is characteristic of the facio-auriculo-vertebral sequence. Sporadic and familial cases have been reported with obvious etiologic heterogeneity. Most reports in the literature are of clinical cases. The purpose of this paper is to present a fetal autopsy case report of the facio-auriculo-vertebral sequence in association with DiGeorge sequence, Rokitansky sequence, and Dandy-Walker malformation. A standard neonatal autopsy was performed on a macerated female fetus, gestational age 29 wk. External examination of the fetus revealed hypoplastic right face, low-se

Prevalence of monoclonal gammopathy in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The association between primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and monoclonal gammopathy has been reported, but whether it is fortuitous remains unsettled. We conducted a prospective study to determine the prevalence of monoclonal gammopathies in patients with surgically proved PHPT. METHODS: In 101 consecutive patients with PHPT, serum immunoglobulins were systematically studied using agarose gel electrophoresis and immunofixation before and, when appropriate, after parathyroid surgery. The PHPT population was compared with a control series of patients with other diseases requiring s

Primary hyperparathyroidism--an Indian study.

Twenty eight patients of sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism seen over a period of 10 years were studied. There were 18 females and 10 males with a mean age of 35.9 years. Bone involvement was the commonest clinical presentation (90%) followed by renal involvement (65%) and more than half the patients (54%) had involvement of both the skeletal and renal systems. The tumor was clinically palapable in six patients. Thalliumtechnetium subtraction scan had a sensitivity of 87% followed by computerised tomography (70%), and ultrasound (65%) in diagnosing parathyroid pathology. All the patients und

Effects of age and estrogen on renal vitamin D metabolism in the female rat.

Young and adult, intact and ovariectomized female rats were used to study the effects of increasing age and estrogen loss on the conversion of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25(OH)D] to 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D] and 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [24,25(OH)2D]. The recovery level of radioactivity in plasma as 1,25(OH)2D after [3H]25(OH)D administration was lower in older animals; ovariectomy reduced [3H]1,25(OH)2D recovery in both young and adult animals. 1,25(OH)2D synthesis by kidney slices was reduced in all adult animals and in ovariectomized young animals. Mineral metabolism and immobilization osteopenia in ponies treated with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol.

The left thoracic limb was immobilized in a plaster cast in 6 grade weanling ponies for 6 weeks. Two ponies were injected intramuscularly each day with 2.4 micrograms of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25(OH)D3] per kg bodyweight, two with 1.2 micrograms and two received no injections. Immobilization of 25(OH)D3 treatment had no significant effect on mineral metabolism. Immobilization resulted in significantly decreased weight and specific gravity of metacarpus III (MCIII). Histologic examination and triple fluorochrome incorporation showed that the osteopenia was caused by atrophy of osteoblasts w
