The devastating effects of humeral nonunion on health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Humeral nonunion is estimated to occur at a rate of 1.1%-25% depending on the fracture location and pattern, mechanism of injury, patient compliance with the immobilization protocol and patient's nutritional status and medical comorbidities. Fracture nonunion can cause chronic pain and limited range of motion and may hinder normal function. There is very little data from the patients' perspective regarding their experience with a humeral nonunion. The aim of this study was to establish health-related quality of life (HRQoL) norms for patients diagnosed with a humeral nonunion. MAT

Caffeine intake is linked to depressive symptoms in patients with heart failure: An analysis based on NHANES, 2005 to 2018.

The impact of caffeine intake on depression remains controversial, and research investigating the effect of caffeine on depression in patients with heart failure (HF) is limited. Depression and HF interact with each other, as depression exacerbates HF symptoms. Therefore, this research evaluated the link between caffeine consumption and depression in HF patients by reviewing clinical evidence and possible effects on patient management. Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2018. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionna

Status of mental and social activities of young and middle-aged patients after papillary thyroid cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is prevalent among younger populations and has a favorable survival rate. However, a significant number of patients experience psychosocial stress and a reduced quality of life (QoL) after surgical treatment. Therefore, comprehensive evaluations of the patients are essential to improve their recovery. METHODS: The present study enrolled 512 young and middle-aged patients diagnosed with PTC who underwent surgery at our institution between September 2020 and August 2021. Long-term quality of life in patients with Crohn's disease and perianal fistulas: influence of fecal diversion.

PURPOSE: Symptomatic perianal fistulas impair quality of life in patients with Crohn's disease. Fecal diversion improves symptoms but may impair quality of life. This study was designed to compare long-term quality of life in patients with Crohn's disease with symptomatic perianal fistulas who were treated with or without fecal diversion. METHODS: From 1996 to 2002, perianal fistulas were treated in 116 patients with Crohn's disease. A questionnaire, including four quality of life instruments, was mailed to each patient (Short-Form General Health Survey, Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index

Non-physical violence: a risk factor for physical violence in health care settings.

This research study assessed the extent to which non-physical violence is a risk factor for physical violence against workers in health care settings. More than 600 nursing staff, other clinical providers, and non-clinical staff in two health care settings completed a cross-sectional survey. For the preceding 12-month period, 72.8% of workers reported at least one incident of non-physical violence and 21.3% reported at least one incident of physical violence. Workers who had experienced non-physical violence were 7.17 times more likely to experience physical violence than those who had not. Bo

Views on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health in people with Down syndrome from diverse backgrounds.

Down syndrome (DS) has a unique medical and psychological profile. To date, few studies have asked individuals with DS about their views of health, and fewer have explored the impact of COVID-19 on the health of individuals with DS and their families. We used a mixed methods approach including two studies on the health of individuals with DS and their parents conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) eight virtual focus groups, comprised of 20 parents and 8 individuals with DS to obtain participants' views of health, and (2) a 20-item questionnaire on health care experience of patients with

Psychometric validation and meaningful change thresholds of the Skindex-10 questionnaire and 5-D Itch scale for assessing itch in patients with chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus.

BACKGROUND: The Skindex-10 questionnaire and 5-D Itch scale are patient-reported outcome measures used to evaluate the itch intensity and impact of chronic pruritus on patients’ quality of life (QoL). These measures may be appropriate for evaluating the efficacy of anti-pruritic treatment in patients with chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP). This study evaluated the psychometric validity and meaningful within-patient change (MWPC) thresholds of these two measures in patients with moderate-to-severe CKD-aP undergoing hemodialysis. METHODOLOGY: Content validity interviews for the

Predicting health-utility scores from the Cervical Spine Outcomes Questionnaire in a multicenter nationwide study of anterior cervical spine surgery.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of the Cervical Spine Research Society Outcomes Study, a longitudinal multicenter cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To provide a statistical model for estimating health utility from the Cervical Spine Outcomes Questionnaire (CSOQ) domain scores. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There is consensus among health-policy researchers that the results of economic evaluations of health can be reported in quality-adjusted life-years (QALY). The CSOQ is a condition-specific instrument that assesses individuals across several domains, including neck and arm/shoulder pain and ps

Health-related quality of life in obstructive sleep apnea patients treated with maxillomandibular advancement surgery: A cross-sectional pilot study (PILOT-QOMAS).

BACKGROUND: Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA) have a lower Health-Related Quality of Life(HRQoL) than individuals without OSA. Maxillomandibular Advancement(MMA) surgery effectively reduces OSA severity, which is often the focus of research. However, evaluating HRQoL seems essential to understand the treatments overall impact. STUDY DESIGN: The primary objective of this cross-sectional pilot study is to evaluate the post-operative HRQoL of patients who had MMA surgery for OSA, compared to a control group of patients who had bimaxillary surgery for facial skeletal deformity.
