Temperamental profiles of dysregulated children.

It is crucial to characterize self-regulation in children. We compared the temperamental profiles of children with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) Dysregulation Profile (CBCL-DP) to profiles associated with other CBCL-derived syndromes. 382 children (204 boys; aged 5-18) from a large family study were examined. Temperamental profiles were based on the Juvenile Temperament and Character Inventory. Children with the CBCL-DP had a temperamental profile characterized by high Novelty Seeking, high Harm Avoidance, low Reward Dependence and low Persistence. Linear mixed models and regression-base

[Alcohol and psychiatric disorders].

Alcohol dependence and abuse is one of the most costly health problems in the world from both a social and an economic point of view. It is a widespread problem, focusing attention not only psychiatrists but also doctors of other specialties. Patterns of drinking appear to be changing throughout the world, with more women and young people drinking heavily. Even risky drinking is a potential health risk, while chronic alcohol abuse contribute to the serious physical and mental complications. Alcohol used disorders associated with alcohol-induced brain damage include: withdrawal state, delirium

[Significance of and considerations relating to the diagnosis of dissociation].

Dissociation involves a variety of clinical concepts, and some disorders are also similar to but not the same as dissociation. Dissociative disorder is considered to be a pathological phenomenon based on a psychological mechanism. Accurate diagnosis is very important to ensure that patients receive adequate treatment, although such consideration is not unique to dissociative disorder. Accordingly, there is a need to carefully distinguish dissociation from other disorders. In this article, we outline a number of dissociative and dissociative-like states from the symptoms of amnesia, depersonali

The internalizing and externalizing structure of psychiatric comorbidity in combat veterans.

This study examined the latent structure of psychiatric disorders in a sample with a high prevalence of PTSD. A series of confirmatory factor analyses tested competing models for the covariation between Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R diagnoses among 1,325 Vietnam veterans. The best-fitting solution was a 3-factor model that included two correlated internalizing factors: anxious-misery, defined by PTSD and major depression, and fear, defined by panic disorder/agoraphobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The third factor, externalizing, was defined by antisocial personality disord

Psychosurgery for self-injurious behavior in Tourette's disorder.

One of the most serious and difficult-to-treat conditions in child and adolescent psychiatry is self-injurious behavior (SIB). SIB can be associated with a number of psychiatric disorders, including mental retardation, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, pervasive developmental disorders, stereotypic movement disorder, and Tourette's Disorder. A variety of neurosurgical procedures have been used to treat both intractable SIB and severe Tourette's Disorder. Understandably, there are few reports concerning psychosurgery in children and adolescents for any condition or disorder. This

[Borderline disorders in childhood and adolescence].

Borderline disorders are situated in the area between neurosis and (schizophrenic) psychosis. In psycho-analytical terms, a "borderline personality organization" is characterized by the following criteria: weak sense of identity, poor reality control, permeable ego boundaries, multifarious defense reactions to impulsivity, disturbed object-relatedness with inappropriate relationship to the environment, and the assumption of a disorder/trauma during early childhood. Some 90% of the children have a history of traumatization in the past, e.g. a severe illness or sexual abuse. Various models are u

Gender differences in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder in a general psychiatric practice.

OBJECTIVE: This report examined gender differences in the clinical manifestations of current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in treatment-seeking patients. METHOD: Outpatients with PTSD (N=138) were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. RESULTS: Compared with male patients, female patients experienced more reexperiencing symptoms and were more likely to meet criteria for current PTSD and to report sexual trauma as their index trauma. Men with PTSD were more likely than women with PTSD to meet criteria for a substance use disorder and for antisocial personality d

Psychopathological characteristics of recovered bulimics who have a history of physical or sexual abuse.

We sought to clarify the influence of a history of sexual or physical abuse on a variety of psychopathologies in subjects with bulimia nervosa (BN). To avoid confounding effects, the presence of a history of sexual or physical abuse, lifetime axis I disorders, and personality disorders were assessed through direct structured interviews in 44 subjects recovered from BN for at least 1 year. Twenty abused subjects (45%) were significantly more likely than 24 subjects without abuse to have severe general psychopathology and eating disturbance. Compared with nonabused subjects, abused subjects show

Anxious-bipolar comorbidity. Diagnostic and treatment challenges.

This article describes multiple anxiety comorbidity in the setting of unstable bipolar syndromes, associated with alcohol and substance abuse. Also described are panic attacks during mania, social phobia followed by hypomania as well as bipolar disorder manifesting as episodic obsessive-compulsive disorder. The use of psychotropic combinations is necessary because of the syndromic complexity and the contrasting effects of pharmacologic treatments. The identification of differential patterns of comorbidity may provide important information in distinguishing more homogeneous clinical subtypes of

Hopelessness and suicidal behavior.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) with suicidal behavior and other clinical variables in 212 hospitalized suicide attempters. Another purpose was to analyze the usefulness of BHS in this particular context. Those who later committed suicide (N = 13) had significantly higher median scores than those who did not. Even though the median BHS score for the total population was above the cut-off score for future suicide risk, suggested by Beck et al., the relative ratio of correctly positive/false positive was low. Therefore the B

[Clinical picture of the late stages of sluggishly-progressing schizophrenia in advanced age].

Under examination there were 190 patients over 60 years of the age suffering from sluggishly progressing schizophrenia and observed at dispensaries for the long time. The course of the psychopathological disorders characteristic of that disease was followed in them for many decades. At the late age a tendency to a regression of most productive symptoms, a certain enlivening of the emotional-volitional sphere, and exaggeration of the signs of the personality structure deformity was revealed. Two types of the negative disorders are specified: one with prevalence of intellectual-volitional impair

Childhood trauma and suicide ideation and attempts: Examining the mediating role of psychosocial, personality, lifestyle and biological factors.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) is robustly associated with suicide ideation (SI) and attempts (SA) in individuals with depressive and/or anxiety disorders. However, pathways underlying these associations and whether they differ between suicide ideation only (SI+SA-) and suicide ideation with attempt (SI+SA+) remain unclear. Variables that may statistically account for CT-SI+SA- and CT-SI+SA+ associations were examined. METHODS: Data from 1572 respondents with a 12-month depressive and/or anxiety disorder from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety were used. The NEMESIS childhood

Personality Traits and Depression in Infertile Couples during the COVID-19.

Background/Objectives: The study presented in this paper seeks to examine how personality traits and depressive symptoms, influenced by the fear of COVID-19, interact in infertile couples, who are on the verge of commencing treatments with assisted reproductive technology (ART). The purpose of this observational study was to explore the relationship between personality traits in infertile couples and the occurrence of depressive symptoms, taking into account the mediating effect of COVID-19 fear. Methods: The study sample consisted of 108 women and 71 men (N = 179), all of whom had received an

Psychiatric risks for worsened mental health after psychedelic use.

BACKGROUND: Resurgent psychedelic research has largely supported the safety and efficacy of psychedelic therapy for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders. As psychedelic use and therapy increase in prevalence, so does the importance of understanding associated risks. Cases of prolonged negative psychological responses to psychedelic therapy seem to be rare; however, studies are limited by biases and small sample sizes. The current analytical approach was motivated by the question of whether rare but significant adverse effects have been under-sampled in psychedelic research studies.

[Implications on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Narcissistic Personality Pathology in Adolescents Based on the Sequelae of the Covid-19 Pandemic].

The COVID-19 pandemic caused more adolescents with a pathological narcissistic personality to seek clinical as well as psychotherapeutic treatment due to suicidal crises, breakdown of social functioning and inability to continue school attendance. Recent study results show that youth with personality disorders (pd) had more trouble returning to school and to everyday life following pandemic related closures of schools. In a sample of adolescent patients with pd who were treated with transference focused psychotherapy (TFP-A) in a day-clinic programsignificantlymore juveniles remained absent fr

Rorschach inkblot test and psychopathology among patients suffering from schizophrenia: A correlational study.

BACKGROUND: Rorschach test has been considered a well-known and most widely used projective test for the assessment of personality and diagnostic evaluation in various psychiatric disorders. Schizophrenia is considered to be the major psychiatric illness characterized by gross distortion of reality, the disorganization and fragmentation of perception, thought, emotion, and withdrawal from social interaction. Rorschach provides both specific and general knowledge about the different areas of personality functioning, such as coping style, emotions, managing stress, mediation, ideation, self-perc
