Use of complementary and alternative medicine in inner-city persons with or at risk for HIV infection.

Previous studies have shown that use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is prevalent among HIV-infected persons, but have focused primarily on men who have sex with men. To determine factors associated with CAM use in an inner city population, individuals (n = 93) recruited from two established cohort studies were interviewed between October and November 2004. The interview assessed the use of dietary supplements and other CAM therapies, reasons for CAM use, and use of prescription medications. Study participants were 52% male and 47% HIV infected. Median age was 50 years, and 60%

Persons with acquired profound hearing loss (APHL): how do they and their families adapt to the challenge?

The study examined the impact of acquired profound hearing loss (APHL) on the relationship between the hearing impaired person and their normally hearing close family member, usually a partner, and identified the kinds of adjustment leading to maintenance or deterioration of the relationship. The participants were 25 people with APHL and 25 family members, interviewed separately in their own home. Analysis of the interview transcripts adopted a grounded theory methodology. The different levels of analysis were linked in terms of a core category based on the social construction of a committed r

Functional electrical stimulation cycling improves body composition, metabolic and neural factors in persons with spinal cord injury.

Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at a heightened risk of developing type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this investigation was to conduct an analysis of metabolic, body composition, and neurological factors before and after 10 weeks of functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling in persons with SCI. Eighteen individuals with SCI received FES cycling 2-3 times per week for 10 weeks. Body composition was analyzed by dual X-ray absorptiometry. The American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) neurological classification of SCI test battery was used to assess motor

Tonguing behaviours in persons with Down syndrome: moderator of the effects of negative mood on behaviour problems.

BACKGROUND: There is concern that tongue protrusion may be maladaptive in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). However, tonguing and other self-manipulatory behaviours have been shown to contribute to emotion regulation in children without disabilities. METHOD: Sixty individuals with intellectual disability (40 with DS, 20 of mixed aetiology) and their parents were videotaped during a puzzle-book task. Empirical relationships between observed tongue protrusion, other observed nonverbal behaviours, and reported negative mood, maladaptive behaviours, and stress-inducing characteristics were ass

Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 and hemoglobin concentration in older persons living in the community.

A decreased hemoglobin concentration is a common clinical condition in elderly subjects, and in at least 20% of the cases it is not possible to directly attribute the anemia to specific factors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship of different levels of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) with the blood concentration of hemoglobin in persons aged 80 years and older. Data are from a baseline evaluation of the Aging and Longevity in the Sirente Geographic Area (ilSIRENTE) study (n=253). Analysis of covariance was used to examine the effect of differen

Experiences of use of the cerebral palsy hemiplegic hand in young persons treated with upper extremity surgery.

The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of young persons using their hemiplegic hand in daily life activities following upper extremity surgery (UES). Ten persons, aged 12-24 years, were interviewed individually five to seven years after surgery. The analysis was guided by a comparative method. The findings show that the participants during this period had experienced changes which they related both to the treatment and to development. Data resolved into three main themes. Functional improvements are interwoven into daily life, the hand is easier to use and is used mor

Awareness of hepatitis C diagnosis is associated with less alcohol use among persons co-infected with HIV.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It is unknown whether testing HIV-infected individuals for hepatitis C virus (HCV) and informing them of their HCV status impacts subsequent alcohol use. We hypothesized that HIV-infected individuals with current or past alcohol problems who reported being told they had HCV were more likely to 1) abstain from alcohol and 2) not drink unhealthy amounts compared to individuals who had not been told. DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS, AND MEASUREMENTS: Data from a prospective, observational cohort study (HIV-Longitudinal Interrelationships of Viruses and Ethanol) were used to assess

Episodic homelessness and health care utilization in a prospective cohort of HIV-infected persons with alcohol problems.

BACKGROUND: Because individuals with HIV/AIDS often have complex medical and social needs, the impact of housing status on medical service utilization is difficult to isolate from the impact of conditions that may worsen during periods of homelessness such as depression and substance abuse. We examine whether episodes of homelessness are independently associated with suboptimal medical utilization even when accounting for concurrent addiction severity and depression. METHODS: We used data from a 30-month cohort of patients with HIV/AIDS and alcohol problems. Housing status, utilization (ambul

Cost-effectiveness of including tuberculin skin testing in an IPT program for HIV-infected persons in Uganda.

SETTING: Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection among persons with human immunodeficiency virus or the acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) effectively treats latent TB infection (LTBI) and prevents progression to active TB. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the costs and cost-effectiveness of tuberculin skin testing (TST) prior to offering IPT. DESIGN: We implemented a program for LTBI screening and IPT using TST for persons with HIV at a voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) center in Kampala, Uganda. Cost-effectiveness analyses usin

[HIV infection and modification of social relationships: study of 188 HIV-infected persons in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)].

HIV infection creates diverse representations among sick people, their families, the community and healthcare workers, representations that modify social relationships. To analyze the interpersonal relationships in families of people living with HIV, we began a cross-sectional descriptive study in 2001 of a population of HIV patients treated at an outpatient center in Ouagadougou. Our objectives were to: 1 degree) describe the changes in the social relationships between the subjects and members of their families; 2 degrees) itemize the difficulties they met within their families and identify t

Lower extremity disease among persons aged > or =40 years with and without diabetes--United States, 1999-2002.

Lower extremity disease (LED), including peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and peripheral insensate neuropathy (PN), is a chronic condition that disproportionately affects older persons and persons with diabetes. LED can result in disabling foot complications (e.g., ulcers, infection, gangrene, or amputation). PAD has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. For this report, CDC analyzed data collected during 1999-2002 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to update previously published estimates of the prevalence of LED among

Prevalence of conditions associated with human immunodeficiency and hepatitis virus infections among persons with haemophilia, 2001-2003.

Before the mid-1980s, haemophilia often was unknowingly treated with contaminated plasma products, resulting in high rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. To estimate the impact of these infections, a new cohort was established. All HCV-seropositive patients, age 13-88 years, at 52 comprehensive haemophilia treatment centres were eligible. Cross-sectional data collected during April 2001 to January 2004 (median June 2002) were analysed. Plasma HIV-1 and HCV RNA were quantified by polymerase chain reaction. Highly active a

The effect of a repeat bout of exercise on muscle injury in persons with spinal cord injury.

Following an initial bout of damaging exercise, a successive bout of similar exercise typically results in less injury, known as the "protective effect". Unloading due to spinal cord injury (SCI) increases the susceptibility to contraction-induced muscle injury. We tested the hypothesis that two bouts of isometric actions would evoke the same damage in the quadriceps femoris (QF) of patients with SCI. Six male subjects [32 (5) years old, 182 (9) cm, 81 (21) kg, injury level C6-T7, 6 (2) years post-injury, mean (SD)] were tested at two time points (Time1, Time2), separated by 8 weeks. Magnetic

Common carotid and common femoral arterial dynamics during head-up tilt in persons with spinal cord injury.

We examined the effect of the level and completeness of spinal cord injury (SCI), tetraplegia and paraplegia, on common carotid arterial (CCA) and common femoral arterial (CFA) functions supine and during head-up tilt (HUT), compared with able-bodied controls. Subjects (tetraplegia [n = 7], paraplegia [n = 8], and controls [n = 8]) were healthy males between the ages of 19 and 60 years. We used Doppler ultrasound to determine vessel diastolic diameters and flow velocities while supine and at 45 HUT. The results indicated that supine CCA diameter and flow were augmented in the tetraplegia group
