Mindfulness for heart and mind: Mindfulness-based blood pressure reduction randomized clinical trial for depression symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of the Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) program on depression symptoms in individuals with elevated blood pressure (BP). Exploratory analyses examined whether childhood abuse or neglect moderated these effects. METHOD: Adults with elevated BP (n = 201; ≥120/80 mmHg) were randomized to MB-BP (n = 101) or enhanced usual care (n = 100) and followed for 6 months. MB-BP trained participants in mindful self-regulation skills-self-awareness, attention control, and emotion regulation-and applied these skills to modifiable determinants of B

Understanding Mental Health and Childhood Adversity in Technology-Facilitated Child Sexual Exploitation Perpetrators: A Systematic Review of the Evidence.

This systematic review examined the mental health conditions, emotional characteristics, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) documented among individuals who perpetrate technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse (TF-CSEA). Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, 10 databases and grey literature sources were searched for studies published from 1989 to March 2024. A narrative synthesis of 22 studies, comprising justice-involved, self-referred, and anonymous online samples from predominantly Western, high-income countries (n =

Association between adverse childhood experiences and combat-related PTSD among Israeli conscripts referred for pre-enlistment mental health evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with PTSD in military populations, but most studies assess ACEs retrospectively after trauma exposure, introducing potential recall bias. Few studies examine ACE-PTSD associations using pre-service assessments where temporal ordering is clear. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 288,633 Israeli Defense Forces conscripts who underwent pre-enlistment mental health evaluations between 2009 and 2019. Participants were systematically identified through universal mandatory screening, representing approxima

Associations of Adverse Childhood Experiences With Pregnancy and Infant Health.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences are associated with a host of negative outcomes; however, few have studied cumulative adverse childhood experiences in the context of pregnancy and infant health. This study examines state-level prevalence of adverse childhood experiences and associations with pregnancy- and infant health‒related indicators. METHODS: The study used 2016-2018 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System population-based data from 5 states. Analyses were conducted for individual states and grouped states using similar adverse childhood experience items. Thirteen advers

Economic Empowerment and Tolerance of Domestic Violence Among Married Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

We evaluated whether markers of economic empowerment are associated with a tolerant attitude toward spousal physical violence (SPV) among employed married women in Nigeria. Cross-sectional analyses of responses to the 2013 Nigeria Demographic Health Survey by a nationally representative sample of 3,999 women aged 15 to 49 years who reported being employed and married. Tolerance for SPV was defined as supporting statements with justifications for wife-beating. Logistic regression assessed the associations of reporting tolerance for SPV with educational attainment and interspousal equivalency in

Predisposing Risk Factors for Functional Limb Weakness: A Case-Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: Functional limb weakness is a common symptom of functional neurological disorder. Few controlled studies have examined possible predisposing factors to determine their specificity for this symptom. METHODS: In this prospective case-control study, patients with functional limb weakness (<2 years duration, N=107) were compared with a control group (comprising patients with weakness attributable to neurological disease, N=46, and healthy individuals, N=39). A structured clinical interview and questionnaires assessed potential predisposing factors, including family structure and childh

Adverse childhood experiences in relation to mood and anxiety disorders in a population-based sample of active military personnel.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been posited that exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increases vulnerability to deployment stress, previous literature in this area has demonstrated conflicting results. Using a cross-sectional population-based sample of active military personnel, the present study examined the relationship between ACEs, deployment related stressors and mood and anxiety disorders. METHOD: Data were analyzed from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey-Canadian Forces Supplement (CCHS-CFS; n = 8340, age 18-54 years, response rate 81%). The following ACEs were self-re

A prospective examination of the path from child abuse and neglect to illicit drug use in middle adulthood: the potential mediating role of four risk factors.

This study examines prostitution, homelessness, delinquency and crime, and school problems as potential mediators of the relationship between childhood abuse and neglect (CAN) and illicit drug use in middle adulthood. Children with documented cases of physical and sexual abuse and neglect (ages 0-11) during 1967-1971 were matched with non-maltreated children and followed into middle adulthood (approximate age 39). Mediators were assessed in young adulthood (approximate age 29) through in-person interviews between 1989 and 1995 and official arrest records through 1994 (N = 1,196). Drug use was

Physical and social trauma: Towards an integrative transdiagnostic perspective on psychological trauma that involves threats to status and belonging.

Current theories of psychological trauma assume that posttraumatic symptoms originate from stress reactions caused by extremely adverse life experiences. Since the diagnosis of PTSD is restricted to events that involve threats to the physical or sexual integrity of a person, such as accidents and physical and sexual violence, these theories are not well suited to explain the psychopathological consequences of severe violations of one's social integrity, such as emotional abuse and bullying. However, it is evident that social threats contribute to a broad range of mental disorders and increase

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a common phenomenon which cuts across all work settings. Its prevalence is particularly high in the health sector and adversely affected service delivery. However, in Nigeria there are limited data on the magnitude of the problem. In this study, we aim to describe the prevalence of workplace violence against health workers in a tertiary hospital located in Abia state, Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, data was collected using self-administered questionnaires distributed to 395 health workers of the clinical services division of

Depressive feelings as mediator in the relation between adverse childhood events and lower urinary tract symptoms in males and females.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood events (ACEs) are prevalent and lead to well-established adverse health sequelae in adulthood. Recent literature has claimed that exposure to trauma in early life may worsen lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) because emotion can alter the perception of bodily distress in the brain. Specifically, depressive symptoms might influence the association between ACEs and LUTS. We aimed to describe the associations between ACEs and LUTS among males and females and to determine whether depressive symptoms mediated these associations. METHODS: This study was a secondary an

Perinatal (Re)experiencing of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms for Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: An Integrative Review.

This integrative review aimed to synthesize both qualitative and quantitative research on the (re)experiencing of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms during the perinatal period for childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors. Whittemore and Knafl's framework, which includes problem identification, literature review, data evaluation, data analysis, and results dissemination, was used. A search in four databases (i.e., PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and Thesis Global) yielded an initial sample of 3420 articles. After screening and deduplication, 16 articles met our

Prevalence and Perception of Intimate Partner Violence-Related Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious and often undiagnosed consequence of intimate partner violence (IPV). Data on prevalence of TBI among IPV survivors are emerging, but prevalence of IPV among patients presenting to TBI clinics is unknown. Identification of IPV is important to ensure patients with TBI receive appropriate intervention and referrals. OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of women 18 years and older presenting to an acquired brain injury (ABI) clinic with confirmed or suspected concussion who reported experiencing IPV in the last 12 months or their lifetime.

Nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, preparedness and practice towards intimate partner violence against women: a scoping review and thematic synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students regularly work with women who have experienced intimate partner violence in their clinical placements and subsequently as registered nurses. They have a role in early detection, intervention, onward referral and education of women about intimate partner violence. Therefore, it is necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of their capability to care for abused women and identify learning needs. Nonetheless, the level of preparedness of nursing students to deal with intimate partner violence has not been reviewed. AIM: To search and review the existing evidenc
