The association between lifestyle factors and the composition of the vaginal microbiota: a review.

PURPOSE: The vaginal microbiota offers valuable insights into women's sexual health and the risk of developing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and bacterial vaginosis. Despite the public health implications of changes in the vaginal environment, existing data on this topic remain sparse. METHODS: Following the PRISMA statement guidelines, we consulted five bibliographic databases, focusing on five main daily habits and behaviors. We included only studies published up to October 2023, investigating the influence of personal hygiene, sexual behaviors, hormonal contraception, smoking, alc

Rheumatic Heart Disease Burden in Africa and the Need to Build Robust Infrastructure.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is an important public health problem in Africa. Mapping the epidemiology of RHD involves elucidating its geographic distribution, temporal trends, and demographic characteristics. The prevalence of RHD in Africa varies widely, with estimates ranging from 2.9 to 30.4 per 1,000 population. Factors contributing to this burden include limited access to health care, poverty, lack of research interest, and genetic fragility. Studies have highlighted differences in group A Streptococcus (GAS) incidence among different African countries, emphasizing the importance of eff

A case study: temporal trends of environmental stressors and reproductive health of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) from a site in the Potomac River Watershed, Maryland, USA.

Decades of poor reproductive success and young-of-the-year survival, combined with adult mortality events, have led to a decline in the smallmouth bass (SMB; Micropterus dolomieu) population in sections of the Potomac River. Previous studies have identified numerous biologic and environmental stressors associated with negative effects on SMB health. To better understand the impact of these stressors, this study was conducted at the confluence of Antietam Creek and the Potomac River from 2013 to 2019 to identify temporal changes associated with SMB reproductive health. Surface water samples wer

Environmental and occupational exposure of metals and female reproductive health.

Untainted environment promotes health, but the last few decades experienced steep upsurge in environmental contaminants posing detrimental physiological impact. The responsible factors mainly include the exponential growth of human population, havoc rise in industrialization, poorly planned urbanization, and slapdash environment management. Environmental degradation can increase the likelihood of human exposure to heavy metals, resulting in health consequences such as reproductive problems. As a result, research into metal-induced causes of reproductive impairment at the genetic, epigenetic, a

Trends of Opioid Use Disorder and Associated Factors in Hospitalized Patients With Arthritis.

Introduction Opioid use was primarily limited to acute pain, postsurgical care, and end of life care setting but now is the most prescribed medication for chronic pain. Arthritis is a chronic disease associated with chronic pain. Given limited options for pain relief in the patient population, these patients are often prescribed opioids and are at increased risk of opioid use disorder (OUD). Therefore, our study aimed to identify factors associated with OUD in patients with arthritis. Methods We analyzed hospitalized adult patients with arthritis with and without OUD using discharge data from

Can tuberculosis be controlled?

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is nearly 100% curable. However, the ability of medical and public health interventions to control TB, particularly in developing countries, is often doubted. METHODS: We reviewed data for the amenability of TB to control. We considered separately control of deaths, prevalence, rate of infection and incidence. RESULTS: Tuberculosis mortality can be reduced by more than 80% in less than 5 years. The prevalence of TB can be reduced by 30% or more annually; sustained annual decreases of 17% have been documented in a developing country. The TB infection rate can be
