Chemical Polishing of Additively Manufactured, Porous, Nickel-Titanium Skeletal Fixation Plates.

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys have shown promise for a variety of biomedical applications because of their unique properties of shape memory, superelasticity, and low modulus of elasticity (Young's modulus). Nevertheless, NiTi bulk components cannot be easily machined (e.g., CNC, rolling, grinding, casting, or press molding) due to their thermomechanical sensitivity as well as inherent superelasticity and shape memory. Thus, powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing has been used to successfully fabricate NiTi medical devices that match the geometric and mechanical needs of a particular p

3D connectomes of reactive and neoplastic CD30 positive lymphoid cells and surrounding cell types.

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is one of the most common malignant lymphomas in Western Europe. It is diagnosed on the basis of histological sections by pathologists using a light microscope. The tumor cells, the Hodgkin- and Reed Sternberg cells (HRS), are visualized by morphology and positive response for the CD30-antigen. The same antigen can also be detected by immunohistochemistry on a reactive counterpart, showing CD30+ cells in special immunoreactions, such as inflammations of lymph nodes (lymphadenitis). CD30+ cells in reactive and neoplastic conditions are surrounded by lymphocytes

Automaticity of lexical access in deaf and hearing bilinguals: Cross-linguistic evidence from the color Stroop task across five languages.

The well-known Stroop interference effect has been instrumental in revealing the highly automated nature of lexical processing as well as providing new insights to the underlying lexical organization of first and second languages within proficient bilinguals. The present cross-linguistic study had two goals: 1) to examine Stroop interference for dynamic signs and printed words in deaf ASL-English bilinguals who report no reliance on speech or audiological aids; 2) to compare Stroop interference effects in several groups of bilinguals whose two languages range from very distinct to very similar

Flexible, high-resolution thin-film electrodes for human and animal neural research.

Objective.Brain functions such as perception, motor control, learning, and memory arise from the coordinated activity of neuronal assemblies distributed across multiple brain regions. While major progress has been made in understanding the function of individual neurons, circuit interactions remain poorly understood. A fundamental obstacle to deciphering circuit interactions is the limited availability of research tools to observe and manipulate the activity of large, distributed neuronal populations in humans. Here we describe the development, validation, and dissemination of flexible, high-r

Electrochemistry provides a point-of-care approach for the marker indicative of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection of cystic fibrosis patients.

It has recently been demonstrated that 2-aminoacetophenone (2-AA) is a chemical indicator in exhaled air/breath of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection associated with progressive life threatening decline of lung function in cystic fibrosis sufferers [Scott-Thomas et al., BMC Pulm. Med., 2010, 10, 56]. Currently the detection of 2-AA involves laboratory based instrumentation such as mass spectrometry and a hand-held point-of-care type breath device would be ideal in providing real-time results within seconds to accelerate patient care decision-making processes. To this end, we demonstrate proof-of

Gait analysis of C57BL/6 mice with complete Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis using the CatWalk system.

BACKGROUND: The CatWalk system, a video based automated gait analysis system developed to evaluate footfall and gait changes in rodents, has been used for studying rodent models of arthritis, mainly the rat model. However, it has not been used to study static and dynamic gait parameters in mice with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). CFA is used extensively to induce arthritis in rodents including mice. METHODS: The CatWalk system was used to study gait of freely moving mice with CFA-induced monoarthritis and evaluate pharmacological pain relief in this model of arthritis. CFA (20 μl) was inje

A modular low-cost and open source device for combined axial-torsion testing of soft materials.

Mechanical characterization of soft materials is essential for understanding their response to external loading and informing functional performance. Soft biological tissues are structurally organized systems whose mechanical behavior depends on cells, the extracellular matrix, and biological processes, including disease. Their experimental characterization requires systems capable of reproducing physiologically relevant loading modes. However, most experimental approaches rely on simplified loading conditions. Moreover, commercial multiaxial platforms are often costly and lack flexibility for

Fabrication of a hybrid cellularized cardiac patch via 3D bioprinting of alginate-gelatin-PEOz patterns on electrospun PLCL-PEOz nanofibers.

Cellular cardiac patches for treating myocardial infarction (MI) need to exhibit both structural fidelity and functional features for their effective regeneration. To achieve a biomimetic patch, we report the development of a hybrid cellular cardiac patch by integrating electrospinning and extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting. A thermoresponsive bioink composed of sodium alginate-gelatin-polyethyl oxazoline (AGP) was optimized for direct printing onto an electrospun nanofiber support matrix. Electrospun-aligned B73 (a 7 : 3 blend of poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) and po

Aqueous Two-Phase Bioinks for Discrete Packing and Compartmentalization of 3D Bioprinted Cells.

The unparalleled ability of aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) to reproduce microscale cellular and biomaterial compartmentalization to selectively modulate cell behavior and functionality is ideal for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM) purposes. Herein, we introduce new ATPS biomaterial inks for 3D bioprinting of water-in-water (W/W) emulsions, enabling precise cellular crowding for tissue regeneration in vitro and ex vivo. Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) was dispersed in an alginic acid phase depending on sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration (0-36 g/L). Emulsion droplet size (12.

Fibrotic-like collagen matrices as 3D in vitro models for investigating the impact of pathological extracellular matrix on skeletal muscle cell behavior.

Skeletal muscle fibrosis is a hallmark of muscular dystrophies, aging or severe muscle injuries. It is characterized by the extensive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM), primarily composed of type I collagen, which disrupts muscle architecture, impairs contractile function, and compromises muscle regenerative abilities. Despite its clinical relevance, to date, no animal or in vitro models recapitulate the main features of muscle fibrosis. In this study, we designed both healthy and fibrotic 3D matrices to investigate the impact of fibrotic environment on myoblast behavior. Fibrotic mat

Bioelectric ink bridge: An electroactive casein bioink for cartilage regeneration by actively restoring the electrophysiological niche.

The development of bioinks that recapitulate key physiological cues remains a central challenge in 3D bioprinting. Although endogenous bioelectric signals are crucial regulators of cell migration, proliferation, and matrix assembly, they are rarely incorporated into bioink design. Here we present a filler-free electroactive bioink, quaternized-methacrylated casein (QCMA), that integrates intrinsic ionic conductivity with high-resolution digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting. Quaternization markedly improves casein solubility and optical clarity (>90% solubility) while introducing permanen

Development and optical characterization of a multilayered head phantom for optical brain monitoring.

SIGNIFICANCE: Optical techniques are promising tools for non-invasive cerebral monitoring; however, optical measurements acquired from the forehead can be influenced by extracranial tissues and skin pigmentation, potentially complicating interpretation of cerebral signals. Tissue-mimicking phantoms provide controlled platforms for studying these effects; however, existing head phantoms employ simplified geometries and lack the features required for cerebral photoplethysmography (PPG) investigations. Innovative applications and future challenges of shape memory scaffolds for functional reconstruction in diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as osteoporosis, cartilage degeneration, and tendon injuries, are common worldwide and have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. These conditions are frequently associated with aging, trauma, or chronic diseases. They are typically characterized by slow and limited self-repair, particularly in tissues like cartilage and tendons, which exhibit low regenerative potential. Traditional treatment methods, such as implantable scaffolds, often face challenges related to incomplete tissue integration and inadequate adaptation to dynamic biomechanica
