Association between bullying victimization and mental health problems among Chinese left-behind children: a cross-sectional study from the adolescence mental health promotion cohort.

BACKGROUND: Left-behind children (LBC) refer to those who have been separated from at least one parent for six months or more due to parental migration for work. This phenomenon poses a significant threat to the mental health of over 61 million LBC in China. This study aims to compare the prevalence of mental health symptoms between LBC and non-left-behind children (non-LBC) and to explore the predictive effect of bullying victimization on adolescent mental health problems. METHODS: In 2019, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis involving 28,036 children and adolescents in Mianyang City, Si

Parental anxiety and depression are associated with adverse mental health in children with special needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to restrictions in various areas of life, including social life, work, leisure, health, and education. Vulnerable groups, such as children with special needs and their parents, may be at increased risk of experiencing exacerbated mental health problems during stressful periods such as the COVID-19 lockdowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Telephone interviews were conducted with 954 parents of children with special needs. We assessed parental levels of generalized anxiety and depression using the validated GAD-7 and PHQ-8 scales.

Toxoplasma gondii IgG associations with sleep-wake problems, sleep duration and timing.

BACKGROUND: Evidence links Toxoplasmagondii (T. gondii), a neurotropic parasite, with schizophrenia, mood disorders and suicidal behavior, all of which are associated and exacerbated by disrupted sleep. Moreover, low-grade immune activation and dopaminergic overstimulation, which are consequences of T. gondii infection, could alter sleep patterns and duration. METHODS: Sleep data on 833 Amish participants [mean age (SD) = 44.28 (16.99) years; 59.06% women] were obtained via self-reported questionnaires that assessed sleep problems, duration and timing. T. gondii IgG was measured with ELISA. D

Validity Aspects of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) Adolescent Self-Report and Parent-Report Versions Among Dutch Adolescents.

In this study, validity aspects of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) self-report and parent-report versions were assessed among Dutch adolescents aged 12 to 17 years (community sample: n = 962, clinical sample: n = 4,053). The findings mostly support the continued use of both SDQ versions in screening for psychosocial problems as (a) exploratory structural equation analyses partially supported the grouping of items into five scales; (b) investigation of associations between scales of the SDQ and the Child Behavior Checklist, Youth Self-Report, and Intelligence Development Scal

Sleep-related problems in neurologic diseases.

There is a strong association between sleep-related problems and neurologic diseases. Neurologic diseases of the CNS can directly cause sleep problems when sleep-wake mechanisms associated with the ascending reticular activating system are involved. The major sleep disorders associated with neurologic problems are outlined in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, 2nd edition, as hypersomnias of central origin, sleep-related breathing disorders, the insomnias, circadian rhythm sleep disorders, sleep-related movement disorders, parasomnias, and sleep-related epilepsy. In a patient

Education of psychiatry in Japan.

This paper discusses the problems of Japanese under- and postgraduate education of psychiatry, and indicates several important points for psychiatric education. Most medical schools give lectures on psychiatry to fourth and fifth graders. Lecturing hours average 2.3% of the total lecture time for medical students. However, the hours have tended to decrease recently, and lectures by the Department of Psychiatry are spreading to the first and second graders. These lectures include behavioral science, psychology and science for human relationships. The following problems should be solved urgently

[Pediatric dysphasia. 1. The concept and clinical aspects].

This survey deals with the early diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental dysphasia, which may prevent the progression of learning and behavior disorders. In the pre-verbal and early verbal stage, the severity of the clinical picture is primarily determined by concomitant motor pathology (motor dysfunction, dysarthria, general and oral dyspraxia) and by receptive pathology (hearing and auditory perception). In the verbal period, linguistic problems start to play a role, and often combine with oral motor symptoms to present a mixed picture. Various language syndromes do not become

Sleep disorders in children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome - a neurodevelopmental disorder with sleep-wake-rhythm-dysfunction - recommendations for pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders in children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) are common. They affect not only the child but also the entire family. Disturbed sleep in SMS is caused by a sleep-wake rhythm dysfunction. SMS patients mostly have an inverted melatonin secretion rhythm with a peak in melatonin levels during the day. Therefore, children with SMS are often awake at night and sleepy during the day, followed by extremely severe behavioral problems. There are many recent scientific studies with treatment recommendations. PURPOSE: Since SMS is a rare disorder, many doctors are not familiar w

Symptomatic Vitamin and Nutrient Deficiencies of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the Potential for Treatment.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurobehavioral disorder. Children with ASD often have restrictive diets that can be due to food aversion, sensory sensitivities, ritualistic behavior, or comorbid gastrointestinal issues. Diet and nutritional status play a critical role in the health of neurodevelopment, and the microbiome, and can affect cognition, motor and sensory status, behavior, and sleep. Children with ASD are 5 times more likely to develop eating problems and secondary vitamin and nutritional deficiencies. Such dietary restriction has been causative of vitamin and nutr
