Inhibition of Experimental Tinnitus With High Frequency Stimulation of the Rat Medial Geniculate Body.

BACKGROUND: Neuromodulation is a promising treatment modality for tinnitus, especially in chronic and severe cases. The auditory thalamus plays a key role in the pathophysiology of tinnitus, as it integrates and processes auditory and limbic information. OBJECTIVE: The effect of high frequency stimulation and low frequency stimulation of the medial geniculate bodies on tinnitus in a noise-induced tinnitus rat model is assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Presence of tinnitus was verified using the gap-induced prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response paradigm. Hearing thresholds were

Quantitative analysis of the complete larval settlement process confirms Crisp's model of surface selectivity by barnacles.

For barnacle cypris larvae at the point of settlement, selection of an appropriate surface is critical. Since post-settlement relocation is usually impossible, barnacles have evolved finely tuned surface-sensing capabilities to identify suitable substrata, and a temporary adhesion system for extensive surface exploration. The pattern of exploratory behaviour appears complex and may last for several hours, imposing significant barriers to quantitative measurement. Here, we employ a novel tracking system that enables simultaneous analysis of the larval body movement of multiple individuals over

Instantaneous Detection of Trichlorinated Carbon via Photo-Induced Electron Transfer toward Chemosensor for Toxic Organochlorides.

Despite the usefulness of organochlorides as raw materials for organic synthesis, they cause several issues in the human body, such as hepatic dysfunction, tumor, and heavy damage to the central nervous system. Especially when organochlorides contain three or more chlorinated carbons, they tend to be more toxic to the human body possibly owing to relatively high reactivity. Several electron donors (TPCAs) are designed to devise a novel detection system for toxic organochlorides containing trichlorinated carbons, and the detection mechanism of the devised sensor system is systematically identif

Influence of chromium hyperdoping on the electronic structure of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite: a first-principles insight.

Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites compounds are emerging as new materials with great potential for efficient solar cells. This paper explores the possibility of increasing their photovoltaic efficiency through sub-bandgap absorption by way of the in gap band (IGB) concept. Thus, we assess the formation of an in gap band as well as its effect on the absorption features of Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI). For this task, we use density functional theory (DFT) as well as many-body perturbation methods along to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) to study structural, e

Transcriptome analyses suggest a novel hypothesis for whitefly adaptation to tobacco.

The adaptation of herbivorous insects to various host plants facilitates the spread and outbreak of many important invasive pests, however, the molecular mechanisms that underneath this process are poorly understood. In the past three decades, two species of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci complex, Middle East-Asia Minor 1 and Mediterranean, have invaded many countries. Their rapid and widespread invasions are partially due to their ability to infest a wide range of host plants. In this study, we determined the transcriptome and phenotypic changes of one Mediterranean whitefly population during it

Thermal Modeling for the Next Generation of Radiofrequency Exposure Limits: Commentary.

This commentary evaluates two sets of guidelines for human exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy, focusing on the frequency range above the "transition" frequency at 3-10 GHz where the guidelines change their basic restrictions from specific absorption rate to incident power density, through the end of the RF band at 300 GHz. The analysis is based on a simple thermal model based on Pennes' bioheat equation (BHTE) (Pennes 1948) assuming purely surface heating; an Appendix provides more details about the model and its range of applicability. This analysis suggests that present limits are highly

Sexual isolation promotes divergence between parapatric lake and stream stickleback.

Speciation can be initiated by adaptive divergence between populations in ecologically different habitats, but how sexually based reproductive barriers contribute to this process is less well understood. We here test for sexual isolation between ecotypes of threespine stickleback fish residing in adjacent lake and stream habitats in the Lake Constance basin, Central Europe. Mating trials exposing females to pairings of territorial lake and stream males in outdoor mesocosms allowing for natural reproductive behaviour reveal that mating occurs preferentially between partners of the same ecotype.

A model for allometric scaling of mammalian metabolism with ambient heat loss.

BACKGROUND: Allometric scaling, which represents the dependence of biological traits or processes on body size, is a long-standing subject in biological science. However, there has been no study to consider heat loss to the ambient and an insulation layer representing mammalian skin and fur for the derivation of the scaling law of metabolism. METHODS: A simple heat transfer model is proposed to analyze the allometry of mammalian metabolism. The present model extends existing studies by incorporating various external heat transfer parameters and additional insulation layers. The model equation

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation induces a sustained improvement in body balance in elderly adults.

Vestibular dysfunction causes postural instability, which is prevalent in the elderly. We previously showed that an imperceptible level of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) can improve postural stability in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy during the stimulus, presumably by enhancing vestibular information processing. In this study, we investigated the after-effects of an imperceptible long-duration nGVS on body balance in elderly adults. Thirty elderly participants underwent two nGVS sessions in a randomised order. In Session 1, participants received nGVS for 30 min twice wit

Patient-specific bone geometry and segment inertia from MRI images for model-based analysis of pathological gait.

Patient-specific modeling is a vital component in the translation of computational multibody dynamics into clinical practice. Recent research has focused on ways to derive such models from medical imaging, but the process is usually time consuming and sensitive to operator skill. Here, we present methods to derive kinematic and inertial properties of body segments from MRI images, and condense them into a dynamically consistent patient-specific multibody model (PSM). We develop a semi-automated tool chain to classify bone, muscle and fat in the lower body and use optimization and geometrical m

How electromagnetic fields can influence adult stem cells: positive and negative impacts.

The electromagnetic field (EMF) has a great impact on our body. It has been successfully used in physiotherapy for the treatment of bone disorders and osteoarthritis, as well as for cartilage regeneration or pain reduction. Recently, EMFs have also been applied in in vitro experiments on cell/stem cell cultures. Stem cells reside in almost all tissues within the human body, where they exhibit various potential. These cells are of great importance because they control homeostasis, regeneration, and healing. Nevertheless, stem cells when become cancer stem cells, may influence the pathological c

Why human evolution should be a basic science for medicine and psychology students.

Based on our teaching experience in medicine and psychology degree programs, we examine different aspects of human evolution that can help students to understand how the human body and mind work and why they are vulnerable to certain diseases. Three main issues are discussed: 1) the necessity to consider not only the mechanisms, i.e. the "proximate causations", implicated in biological processes but also why these mechanisms have evolved, i.e. the "ultimate causations" or "adaptive significance", to understand the functioning and malfunctioning of human body and mind; 2) examples of how human

Morphological differences in adipose tissue and changes in BDNF/Trkb expression in brain and gut of a diet induced obese zebrafish model.

Obesity is a multifactorial disease generated by an alteration in balance between energy intake and expenditure, also dependent on genetic and non-genetic factors. Moreover, various nuclei of the hypothalamus receive and process peripheral stimuli from the gastrointestinal tract, controlling food intake and therefore energy balance. Among anorexigenic molecules, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) acts through the tyrosine-kinase receptor TrkB. Numerous data demonstrate that the BDNF/TrkB system has a fundamental role in the control of food intake and body weight. Quantitative PCR and imm

[Language deficits in major forms of dementia and primary progressive aphasias: an update according to new diagnostic criteria].

In this review, we report current data on spoken and written language disorders in the most frequent dementia syndromes, namely Alzheimer' disease, vascular cognitive impairment and dementia with Lewy bodies. Language deficits are also the core features of three variants of primary progressive aphasia, namely the nonfluent/agrammatic, semantic and logopenic variants. This review reveals that, like other cognitive functions, language is highly vulnerable to neurodegenerative diseases. For some, language deficits result from impairment in linguistic processes per se, while for others, they are t

Biocompatibility and potential of decellularized porcine small intestine to support cellular attachment and growth.

The aim of this study was to decellularize a 30 cm long segment of porcine small intestine, determine its in vivo behaviour and assess the type of immunological reaction it induces in a quantitative manner. A segment of porcine ileum up to 30 cm long, together with its attached vasculature, was decellularized via its mesenteric arcade as a single entity. The quality of the acellular scaffold was assessed histologically and using molecular tools. The host response to the scaffold was evaluated in a rodent model. Stereological techniques were incorporated into quantitative analysis of the phenot

Effects of internal rigid fixation on mandibular development in growing rabbits with mandibular fractures.

PURPOSE: The aim of this research was to determine whether rigid internal fixation interferes with mandibular growth and development in growing New Zealand white rabbits with induced mandibular fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten 3-month-old New Zealand white rabbits were included in the study. Surgical fractures were performed in the right mandibular bodies of the 10 rabbits. These fractures were reduced with internal rigid fixation by use of a 1.0-mm titanium system, taking the contralateral left mandibular bodies as the control group. We obtained radiographs preoperatively and at 1, 2, a

The changes of pro-opiomelanocortin neurons in type 2 diabetes mellitus rats after ileal transposition: the role of POMC neurons.

BACKGROUND: Ileal transposition (IT) can effectively resolve obesity and improve type 2 diabetes. IT is associated with increased glucagon-like peptide 1 secretion. The mechanisms mediating the effects of IT on obesity and diabetes remain undefined. Given the role of pro-opiomelanocortin neurons in energy balance, we sought to determine its potential role in these processes. METHODS: Twenty non-obese diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rats underwent either IT or sham operation. Various measures including food intake, body weight, fasting plasma glucose, glucagon-like peptide 1 level, activated pro-opiome

High-density areas on muscle CT in childhood-onset Pompe disease are caused by excess calcium accumulation.

We report two patients with childhood-onset Pompe disease showing striking changes with high-density areas on skeletal muscle CT, not seen in adult- or infantile-onset forms of this disease. While the anterior compartment of the thigh muscles was less affected in the adult-onset form, the rectus femoris and tibial muscles were preferentially involved from the early stage in the childhood-onset form of Pompe disease. The high-density areas became increasingly diffuse with disease progression, producing a marbled pattern and ultimately resulting in homogeneous high density and muscle atrophy. Mu

Strategies for treatment in Alexander disease.

Alexander disease is a rare and generally fatal disorder of the CNS, originally classified among the leukodystrophies because of the prominent myelin deficits found in young patients. The most common form of this disease affects infants, who often have profound mental retardation and a variety of developmental delays, but later onset forms also occur, sometimes with little or no white matter pathology at all. The pathological hallmark of Alexander disease is the inclusion body, known as Rosenthal fiber, within the cell bodies and processes of astrocytes. Recent genetic studies identified heter
