Improving access to care through Advanced Practice Registered Nurses: Focus on perinatal patients with Opioid Use Disorder.

Perinatal substance use disorders, and all of the associated sequelae, continue to be a national health crisis that is further impacted by shifts in access to obstetrical care, particularly in rural areas. Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) specifically presents as a medical condition for which evidence-based guidelines support the use of medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the form of Methadone or Buprenorphine for both non-pregnant and pregnant women. However, the overall rates of access for those treatment modalities remain sparse. There is a public call to increase access to MOUD

Autonomic Nervous System Trial: Control and Resolve for Sleep-Breathing Disorders.

Conventional approaches to sleep dentistry concentrate on apneas/ hypopneas that cause periodic desaturations and fragmentations, a strategy that may be leading healthcare professionals to overlook many patients in dental practices with breathing-disturbed sleep. Recent studies have explored a new chronic "stress" paradigm rather than the apnea/hypopnea model to explain damage from sleep-breathing disorders and the progressive nature of this problem. This article will discuss the shortcomings of traditional approaches for dealing with obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep-breathing condition

Update on management of genitourinary syndrome of menopause: A practical guide.

The term genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) emerged following a consensus conference held in May 2013. GSM is a more descriptive term than vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) and does not imply pathology. However there are concerns that GSM is all encompassing and includes not only symptoms resulting from estrogen deficiency, but also those arising from the effects of ageing and other processes on the bladder and pelvic floor. Focusing on symptoms related to estrogen deficiency, the update provides a practical guide for health and allied health professionals on the impact of GSM on women and the

Patients with anorexia nervosa who self-injure: a phenomenological study.

PURPOSE: This study investigates self-injury from the perspective of patients with anorexia nervosa. DESIGN AND METHODS: A phenomenological design was used. Twelve patients participated. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide. FINDINGS: Participants display self-injurious behavior predominantly in situations when they are forced to eat. They are terrified of gaining weight and use self-injurious behavior to cope with their anxiety. Self-injury is envisioned as a technique to regain control of their own eating pattern without bothering anyone. They feel shame for not cont

Social service professionals' perceptions of nonoffending caregivers in child sexual abuse cases.

This study was designed to assess social service workers' perceptions of nonoffending caregivers in cases of child sexual abuse. Attributions of blame were examined by administering questionnaires to staff at local social service agencies. It was hypothesized that social service workers who worked in the field longer, were male, or had less education would attribute more blame to the nonoffending caregivers. The findings revealed that respondent gender was the only significant predictor of blame attribution toward nonoffending caregivers, with level of education approaching significance as a p

"Caution! Contents should be cold": developing a whole-body hypothermia program.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is characterized as brain injury that results from lack of oxygen or blood flow to the brain in the perinatal period. Neonatal whole-body hypothermia and selective head cooling are becoming increasingly common care practices across the U.S. and Canada for infants with moderate-to-severe HIE because of the demonstrated ability of these approaches to reduce reperfusion injury to the brain. Health care professionals must develop a clinical care path for these fragile infants. For best results, induced hypothermia should be initiated within six hours of birth;

Prosthodontic management of older severe hypodontia patients in general dental practice: a case series.

Although a detailed understanding of the etiology of hypodontia is lacking, there is a need for awareness among dental professionals of the social and psychological consequences of severe hypodontia, as well as knowledge of those affected by hypodontia have ongoing dental treatment needs. Although, there may be a need for immediate referral of children to different specialists for optimal multidisciplinary treatment planning, most older patients with severe hypodontia can be treated by general practitioners. Practitioners therefore need to be aware of the ramifications of the condition and be

Regional and international integrated telemedicine network for organ transplant (HC 4028 & IN 4028 European Commission DGXIII).

A substantial portion of future medical practice will depend greatly on improved collaboration between the providers throughout the healthcare sector, and effective sharing of data and expertise by different healthcare professionals. In organ transplant it is a rule, donor organs are matched to recipients via national or multinational organ-sharing organizations. Only through close co-operation between transplant surgeons, immunologists, nephrologists, pathologists, radiologists and other physicians could one increase the efficiency of organ transplantation. From Risk Determinants to Clinical Action: Understanding and Implementing the Cardiovascular‑Kidney‑Metabolic Syndrome Framework.

The cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome is a major and growing global health burden, with disproportionate impact among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. It reflects the interconnectedness of cardiovascular disease, CKD, and metabolic dysfunction, driven by excess adiposity (particularly visceral obesity and ectopic fat deposition), insulin resistance, inflammation, vascular dysfunction, and other metabolic perturbations. The American Heart Association introduced the CKM syndrome framework, defining a five-stage (0-4) continuum that captures progressive risk of cardiovasc

Establishment of Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography Fellowship Using a Nominal Group Technique.

BACKGROUND: Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography (AEMUS) has become a recognized subspecialty within Emergency Medicine, yet no unified national curriculum or assessment framework exists for fellowship training. As competency-based medical education develops, entrustable professional activities (EPAs) offer a structured approach to defining essential tasks, guiding curriculum design, and standardizing assessment. To support high-quality, equitable AEMUS fellowship training, the Education Committee of the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships (SCUF) convened a diverse expert panel t

User experiences and perceptions on the use of digital health technologies in the management of type 2 diabetes: an integrative systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a global public health problem. In Ecuador, it is the second leading cause of death among women and the third among men. Digital health technologies, including mobile applications, messaging platforms, and web-based tools, have emerged as promising interventions for managing this condition, although a gap remains between their theoretical potential and their effective implementation in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: To explore and synthesize the available evidence on the experiences, perceptions, barriers, and facilitators reported by ad

Non-prescription antibiotic dispensing in community pharmacies in LMICs: a systematic review of prevalence, drivers, and policy implications.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacists dispensing antibiotics without a prescription (DAwP) remain a contributing factor to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Multiple structural, behavioral, and systemic factors influence this practice, yet the diversity and interaction of these drivers remain insufficiently explored. OBJECTIVE: This systematic literature review aims to identify and synthesize the internal and external factors contributing to DAwP among community pharmacists in LMICs, integrating evidence from both qualitative and mixed-method studies to of

Resource allocation decisions faced by health care providers during the COVID-19 pandemic in a community intensive care unit in Ontario, Canada: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Insufficient resources and dynamic infection control policies during the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated that frontline health care providers (HCPs) make frequent ethical decisions about the allocation of scarce supplies, space, and clinician time to patient care activities. We aimed to understand the process, nature, and impact of these resource allocation decisions. METHODS: Using a qualitative case study approach, we developed an understanding of the decision-making of frontline intensive care unit (ICU) HCPs during the pandemic. We conducted 25 semistructured interviews with multi

Re-imagining poppers regulation in Canada: Perspectives from pharmacists, pharmacy students and public health practitioners.

Alkyl nitrites, commonly known as poppers, remain widely used in Canada despite regulatory prohibitions that restrict their sale as prescription-only substances. This incongruence between policy and practice has contributed to unregulated supply chains, product contamination, and missed opportunities for harm reduction - particularly among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, who use poppers at higher rates. This commentary examines the implications of reclassifying poppers as Schedule II drugs, permitting pharmacist-mediated, non-prescription access, drawing on perspectives fro
