Randomized controlled trial of false safety behavior elimination therapy: a unified cognitive behavioral treatment for anxiety psychopathology.

We tested the efficacy of a unified cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol for anxiety disorders. This group treatment protocol, termed false safety behavior elimination therapy (F-SET), is a cognitive-behavioral approach designed for use across various anxiety disorders such as panic disorder (PD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). F-SET simplifies, as well as broadens, key therapeutic elements of empirically validated treatments for anxiety disorders to allow for easier delivery to heterogeneous groups of patients with anxiety psychopathology. Patients wit

Transdiagnostic versus diagnosis-specific cbt for anxiety disorders: a preliminary randomized controlled noninferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral treatments for anxiety disorders have been gaining increased attention and empirical study in recent years. Despite this, research on transdiagnostic anxiety treatments has, to date, relied on open trials, or comparisons to waitlist conditions, published benchmarks, or relaxation-based interventions. METHODS: The current study was a randomized clinical trial examining the efficacy of a 12-week transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral group treatment in comparison to 12-week diagnosis-specific group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) protocols for p

Commentary on the treatment of gender variant and gender dysphoric children and adolescents: common themes and ethical reflections.

This commentary offers preliminary ethical reflections on the range of treatments for gender variant and gender dysphoric children, adolescents, and young adults described in the preceding five clinical articles. After clarifying the terminology used to discuss these issues, this commentary reviews several common themes of the clinical articles. Focusing on ethical values of informed consent, full disclosure, the minimization or avoidance of harm, and the maximization of life options, the commentary expresses concerns about various treatment options endorsed by some of the articles. In particu

A synthesis of the evidence for managing stress at work: a review of the reviews reporting on anxiety, depression, and absenteeism.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stressors in the workplace are a cause of anxiety and depressive illnesses, suicide and family disruption. METHODS: The present review synthesizes the evidence from existing systematic reviews published between 1990 and July 2011. We assessed the effectiveness of individual, organisational and mixed interventions on two outcomes: mental health and absenteeism. RESULTS: In total, 23 systematic reviews included 499 primary studies; there were 11 meta-analyses and 12 narrative reviews. Meta-analytic studies found a greater effect size of individual interventions on indi

[Mania in late life: bipolar disorder as diagnosis by exclusion].

BACKGROUND: The underlying cause of mania in later life can be an early- or late-onset bipolar disorder or it can be a mood disorder arising from a physical illness, also known as 'a secondary mania'. Thorough diagnostic tests are needed to differentiate between the two types of mania. AIM: To discuss the epidemiology, presentation, diagnostic considerations and treatment options when a mania develops in later life. METHOD: The literature was studied systematically with the help of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, specialist manuals, Dutch guidelines and references. RESULTS: So far, research i

A randomized controlled trial of a single session motivational intervention for concerned gamblers.

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a promising brief intervention for people who wish to cut down or quit gambling. The study was a randomized clinical trial that tested the efficacy of a single face-to-face MI compared with a control interview (CI) for reducing gambling behaviours in individuals who expressed concerns about their gambling. Eighty-one media recruited gamblers were followed at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post-intervention. At 12 months post-intervention participants in the MI condition spent significantly less money on gambling per month, gambled fewer days per month, and reported sig

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of psycho-behavior therapy for premature ejaculation (PE). METHODS: A total of 58 PE patients that met the study criteria were treated by psycho-behavior therapy, 2-3 times a week, for a 6-time course. After the treatment, the therapeutic effect was assessed by observation of the changes in the patients' CIPE-5 scores. RESULTS: The rates of cure, effectiveness, ineffectiveness and overall effectiveness were 46.55% (27/58), 32.76% (19/58), 20.69% (12/58) and 79.31%, respectively. The CIPE-5 scores of the patients were elevated from 7.97 +/- 2.30

Technology and innovation in the psychosocial treatment of methamphetamine use, risk and dependence.

ISSUES: The dramatic increase in methamphetamine use has led to the urgent need for high-quality, effective treatments and management strategies for methamphetamine use problems to be developed and disseminated. Although some evidence exists for the use of psychological, pharmacological and other approaches to treatment for problematic methamphetamine use, other evidence suggests that many methamphetamine users do not access these treatment options due to a range of individual and service-level barriers. APPROACH: A review of available research literature was undertaken to identify treatment

Imagery rescripting versus in vivo exposure in the treatment of snake fear.

This study compared imagery rescripting, in vivo exposure therapy and their combination in the treatment of snake fear. Imaginal ability was assessed pre-treatment, and was correlated with baseline avoidance. Snake fearful individuals were randomly assigned to cognitive therapy involving imagery rescripting, in vivo exposure, a combination of the two, or a relaxation control. All active treatment groups improved significantly more than the control group in both fearfulness and behavioral approach. There were no significant differences between the active treatment groups, although the combined

Psychological trauma and PTSD symptoms as predictors of substance dependence treatment outcomes.

Psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may complicate and reduce the effectiveness of treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs). This study assessed trauma history and symptoms of simple and complex PTSD at baseline in a randomized trial of contingency management (CM) compared to standard treatment (ST) with 142 cocaine- or heroin-dependent outpatients. History of exposure to each of eight types of psychological trauma was unrelated to treatment outcome, except for witnessed assaults and emotional abuse. Complex PTSD symptoms were inversely associated with short-term

Musical alexia with recovery: a personal account.

I describe the experience of an acute loss of ability to read music and play the piano accurately and expressively following an embolic infarct of the right angular and supramarginal gyri in a setting of chronic migraine. Other parietal deficits included a small visual field defect, visual hallucinations, prosopagnosia, topographical disorientation, disturbance of perception of velocity of moving objects and dyscalculia. Recovery began within a month of the ictus after instituting a regular practice routine. The ability to read and play polyphony recovered before the ability to read homophonic

Bipolar II disorder: a review.

OBJECTIVES: To review the current knowledge of bipolar II disorder. METHODS: Literature was reviewed after conducting a Medline search and a hand search of relevant literature. RESULTS: Bipolar II disorder is a common disorder, with a prevalence of approximately 3-5%. Distinct clinical features of bipolar II disorder have been described. The key to diagnosis is the recognition of past hypomania, while depression is the typical presenting feature of the illness. This is responsible for a significant rate of missed diagnosis, and consequent management according to unipolar guidelines. It is un

Recent advances in the treatment of opiate addiction.

Although addiction to heroin and other opiates is a major public health issue in the United States and many other countries, advances in pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment have been made. Some of these advances represent a major shift from traditional treatment philosophies, whereas others are characterized by more subtle, though important, improvements. This review discusses recent advances in opiate-addiction treatment in the context of three main domains: the use of buprenorphine and buprenorphine/naloxone in an office-based paradigm, psychosocial treatment and the addressing of m
