Prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors among public school teachers in Obuasi East Municipality, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major global public health concern, with its burden steadily increasing in developing countries, including Ghana. School teachers are at increased risk due to occupational stress, sedentary behaviour, and lifestyle factors, yet their hypertension status remains understudied. This study investigated the prevalence of hypertension and associated factors among public school teachers in Obuasi East Municipality, Ghana. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 419 teachers from 47 public schools in the municipality, recruited between January 27,

Connecting People to Food: A Network Approach to Alleviating Food Deserts.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, 13.8 million people in the United States struggled with food security. This means they were uncertain whether their food needs would be met. Where someone lives can influence struggles with food security. Food deserts are census tracts that experience high rates of poverty (20 percent of residents at/below poverty thresholds) and low access to grocery stores with nutritious foods. Food deserts and insecurity disproportionately affect disadvantaged communities and may contribute to health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Public policies can be utili

Operational demonstration and process evaluation of non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) introduction to the public health system of Northern Province, Zambia.

BACKGROUND: A disproportionate burden of maternal deaths occurs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and obstetric hemorrhage (OH) is a leading cause of excess mortality. In Zambia, most of maternal deaths are directly caused by OH. The Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (NASG) is a first aid tool that uses compression to the abdomen and lower body to stop and reverse hypovolemic shock secondary to OH. We describe the process and experiences introducing the NASG into the Zambia public health system to encourage the development of national policies, clinical guidelines, and implementation

Quantifying the effect of Wakefield et al. (1998) on skepticism about MMR vaccine safety in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to trace the rise of childhood vaccine safety concerns in the US often suggest Andrew Wakefield and colleagues' retracted 1998 Lancet study (AW98)-which alleged that the MMR vaccine can cause children to develop autism-as a primary cause of US vaccine skepticism. However, a lack of public opinion data on MMR safety collected before/after AW98's publication obscures whether anecdotal accounts are indicative of a potentially-causal effect. METHODS: We address this problem using a regression discontinuity framework to study change in monthly MMR injury claims (N = 74,850; fro

Global financing of strabismus surgery: a literature review supported by an international survey.

PURPOSE: Strabismus surgery is a well-established intervention with demonstrated functional and psychosocial benefits, supported by extensive clinical and economic literature. Despite this evidence, reimbursement policies remain highly heterogeneous worldwide, often influenced by the persistent ambiguity between functional and cosmetic indications. A comprehensive synthesis of existing cost data, combined with real-world reimbursement practices, is required to better understand barriers to equitable access to care. METHODS: We conducted a targeted literature review to identify published data

Case-control and genomic epidemiology characterization of SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infections during the Delta-to-Omicron transition.

UNLABELLED: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines reduced severe coronavirus disease 2019, but variants like Delta and Omicron caused widespread breakthrough infections (BIs). Mexico, offering diverse vaccines, and its Yucatán region, a major travel hub, provide a unique setting to study BIs. We characterized SARS-CoV-2 BIs in Yucatán during the Delta-to-Omicron transition (September 2021-January 2022), assessing disease severity, symptoms, and viral transmission dynamics using epidemiological and genomic data. A case-control study using health system data (n =

Tested but unprotected? Uncovering missed opportunities in hepatitis B prevention among health professionals in Sierra Leone.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a major occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs), particularly in low-resource settings like Sierra Leone, where systemic challenges hinder effective prevention efforts. Despite the availability of an effective vaccine since 1982 and widespread screening initiatives, HBV vaccination uptake among HCWs remains alarmingly low. This study investigates the disconnect between HBV screening and subsequent vaccination among HCWs in Sierra Leone, examining individual, institutional, and systemic factors. METHODS: we employed a mixed-methods cross-

A comprehensive study of hip dislocation: global health burden from 1990 to 2021 and its predictions to 2030.

OBJECTIVES: Hip dislocation is a critical clinical emergency that demands immediate intervention to prevent complications such as avascular necrosis, nerve damage, and long-term joint dysfunction. As population demographics evolve-with aging populations and increasing urbanization-and injury patterns shift due to factors such as road traffic accidents, sports-related injuries, and occupational hazards, the need to update our understanding of the epidemiology of hip dislocation becomes ever more pressing. These changes highlight the importance of identifying high-risk groups and tailoring preve

Interventions to Maintain HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Service Delivery During Public Health Emergencies in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Although existing disease preparedness and response frameworks provide guidance about strengthening emergency response capacity, little attention is paid to health service continuity during emergency responses. During the 2014 Ebola outbreak, there were 11,325 reported deaths due to the Ebola virus and yet disruption in access to care caused more than 10,000 additional deaths due to measles, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Low- and middle-income countries account for the largest disease burden due to HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria and yet previous responses to health emergenci

Advancing Vaccination Strategies for Older Adults: Insights of the Adult Immunization Board Meeting.

As Europe's population ages, optimizing vaccination strategies for older adults is an increasing public health priority. Vaccine-preventable infections pose significant risks, including increased morbidity and mortality, reduced quality of life, and substantial healthcare costs. Prevention, particularly adult vaccination, plays a vital role in mitigating these outcomes and supporting healthy ageing. While childhood immunization remains essential, a life-course approach including routine older adult vaccination is needed. Coverage among older adults across Europe remains suboptimal owing to fac

Advancing equity and value in United States healthcare: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: The United States (U.S.) healthcare system consistently underperforms in equity and value compared to peer countries. Socially disadvantaged groups, such as racial and ethnic minorities, refugees, and low-income populations, experience worse access to healthcare and poorer health outcomes. This issue highlights the need for targeted interventions to reduce disparities and improve healthcare quality in both public health and clinical practice. This scoping review aims to map existing literature on interventions that promote healthcare equity and value in the US, focusing on access t

Medication Adherence Measurement in Southeast Europe: A Comparative Analysis of Assessment Methods, Digital Health Implementation, and Regulatory Frameworks.

Medication adherence is a critical determinant of treatment effectiveness; however, its measurement and integration into routine healthcare practice remain challenging in many healthcare systems. This study aimed to compare medication adherence measurement methods and examine the legal and regulatory frameworks governing adherence-related tools in North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and Bulgaria. A structured comparative, two-phase document review was conducted between January and April 2026. The first phase identified and compared medication adherence measurement methods reported in research an

Thematic Evolution in Medical Education Research (2000-2024): A Large-Scale BERTopic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Few large-scale, semantically informed mappings of medical education research exist: traditional methods such as keyword co-occurrence and Latent Dirichlet Allocation cannot capture the contextual meaning of scientific abstracts. This study aimed to identify major research topics in medical education, classify their temporal trends, explore temporal associations with major policy and technology developments, and characterize their structural positioning. METHODS: We applied BERTopic, a transformer-based topic modeling framework, to 276,253 English-language publications from PubMed
