[Myocardial perfusion in mitral valve prolapse with arrhythmic syndrome].

Myocardial perfusion was studied in 12 patients with mitral valve prolapse concurrent with cardiac arrhythmias by using two-dimensional 201Tl myocardial scintigraphy at rest and during exercise test. Signs of myocardial ischemia were revealed only in one case. Five patients were found to have steady-state perfusion defects whose extent correlated with the depth of mitral valve prolapse. There was an irregular distribution of myocardial blood flow, which ceased on exercise in 10 out of 12 patients. Patients with ventricular premature contraction displayed a decreased reserve of myocardial blood

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS. PHYSICAL MEASURES IN TREATMENT OF CHILDREN.

Prognosis in rheumatic arthritis in children is good, provided total care is given, deformity prevented and function maintained. Bed rest is desirable until active inflammation of the joints has subsided. During convalescence a balance between rest and exercise must be maintained to avoid recurrence of inflammation of the joints. When there is progressive deformity or disabling pain in the wrist, a molded leather wrist-cuff splint can control the deformity, decrease or abolish pain and lessen swelling. If there is valgus deformity of the knee or external rotation of the tibia, with no more tha

The physiological cost of coping: a systematic review and meta-analysis on discrimination and heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects parasympathetic regulation and is typically associated with better health outcomes. However, minoritized populations, particularly African Americans, show a paradoxical pattern of higher resting HRV despite greater cardiovascular risk, a phenomenon known as the Cardiovascular Conundrum. Discrimination has been proposed as a key mechanism, but evidence remains fragmented. METHODS: The present meta-analysis quantified HRV in relation to discrimination across 3 domains: (1) resting HRV differences between minoritized and majority groups, (2) HRV

A meta-analysis of heart rate variability and psychopathology: An investigation guided by the hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology framework.

Although low resting heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with various forms of psychopathology, patterns of specificity and nonspecificity in the apparent transdiagnostic nature of resting HRV have not been systematically investigated. Existing research is dominated by disorder-specific studies, limiting conclusions about whether HRV reductions reflect mechanisms unique to particular diagnoses or a broader transdiagnostic vulnerability. Using the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology framework, this Stage 2 Registered Report synthesized evidence from 430 studies and 732 effect sizes

Diagnostic value of heart rate-based methods for assessing cardiac autonomic neuropathy in prediabetes and diabetes.

This study tested the ability of simple heart rate (HR)-based measures-namely, resting HR variability (HRV), post-exercise HRV, and HR recovery (HRR)-to identify cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Fifty subjects with T2D or prediabetes participated in the study. CAN was diagnosed using five cardiovascular reflex tests: HR response to Valsalva, deep breathing, and standing; and blood pressure response to sustained handgrip and standing. Resting HRV was evaluated using time- (SDNN, RMSSD) and frequency-domain analysis (total power

Enhancing Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus Surveillance in New Jersey: Optimized Collection of Culiseta melanura.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) causes the most clinically severe neuroinvasive arboviral disease in the United States. The virus is endemic in eastern and Gulf Coast states and the Great Lakes region, causing cases annually. To detect EEEV circulation in its enzootic cycle before the virus infects humans and other mammals, mosquito control agencies in New Jersey have conducted mosquito surveillance using a series of permanent wooden resting box sites since 1975. We conducted 2 field studies, 1 evaluating resting traps and 1 evaluating efficacy of CO2 lures, to optimize collection of

Barrier screens: a method to sample blood-fed and host-seeking exophilic mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Determining the proportion of blood meals on humans by outdoor-feeding and resting mosquitoes is challenging. This is largely due to the difficulty of finding an adequate and unbiased sample of resting, engorged mosquitoes to enable the identification of host blood meal sources. This is particularly difficult in the south-west Pacific countries of Indonesia, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea where thick vegetation constitutes the primary resting sites for the exophilic mosquitoes that are the primary malaria and filariasis vectors. METHODS: Barrier screens of shade-cloth ne

[Endosonographic and manometric assessment of the internal anal sphincter in patients with chronic anal fissure].

INTRODUCTION: High anal resting pressures have been implicated in the pathophysiology of chronic anal fissure. It is not known, however, whether altered function is associated with any morphological abnormalities of the internal anal sphincter (IAS). The aims of the present study were to determine IAS thickness in patients with chronic anal fissure and to investigate the correlation between IAS thickness and anal resting pressure. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Patients with chronic anal fissure were prospectively included between November 1999 and December 2002. Patients with a history of inflammatory

Furosemide attenuates the exercise-induced increase in pulmonary artery wedge pressure in horses.

Right atrial (RA), right ventricular (RV), pulmonary artery (PA), and pulmonary artery wedge (PAW) pressures were examined, using catheter-mounted micromanometers, in 8 healthy horses at rest and during galloping on a treadmill at belt speeds of 8, 10, and 13 m/s. The in vivo signals from the micromanometers were matched with those from conventional fluid-filled catheter transducers leveled at the scapulohumeral joint. Thirty minutes after completing control exercise measurements, furosemide was administered IV at a dosage of 1 mg/kg of body weight, and resting, as well as exercise, measuremen

Expression of epidermal growth factor receptors by odontogenic jaw cysts.

The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) by odontogenic epithelium was studied in odontogenic cysts (n = 35), ameloblastoma (n = 6), and periapical granulomas containing proliferating epithelial rests of Malassez (n = 7) using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to EGFr (clone E30, F4 and C11) known to react with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections. Odontogenic epithelium in all specimens demonstrated immunoreactivity with all three antibodies. Clone E30 consistently gave the most intense, membrane located staining pattern of the three antibodies tested. Generally, stainin

Effect of hormonal and substrate backgrounds on cell membrane function in normal males.

Hormonal and substrate influences on in vivo cellular membrane function were evaluated in 15 healthy male volunteers. Each subject underwent serial evaluations of membrane function in the anterior tibialis muscle, as assessed by transcutaneous measurement of resting membrane potential (Em). Group A subjects (n = 9) underwent measurement of resting Em in the basal state and again during the 10th day of intravenous feeding (IVF). Group B subjects (n = 6) underwent measurement of resting Em in the basal state during epinephrine infusion and again during epinephrine infusion on the 7th day of IVF.

Shear Wave Elastography in Children: Normative Values and the Impact of Healthy Habits in a Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Biomechanical properties of the musculoskeletal system are important to understand muscle function, but they are difficult to assess noninvasively. Shear wave elastography (SWE) allows objective quantification of muscle elasticity. However, normative data and the influence of lifestyle habits on muscle elasticity in children remain unclear, particularly across multiple upper and lower limb muscles and in relation to modifiable healthy behaviors. The main objective was to assess muscle elasticity at rest and during maximum passive stretching (MPS) in children using SWE, and to addre

MoCap-Referenced Neck-Shoulder sEMG-IMU Decoding for Discrete Assistive Commands: A Pilot Study.

Hands-free command interfaces are essential for users who cannot reliably operate joysticks or upper-limb myoelectric control. Neck-shoulder surface electromyography (sEMG) is a promising alternative; however, performance is often reported using window-level validation which can overestimate accuracy due to overlap and trial leakage, and false-trigger behavior is not always quantified when an idle REST state is included. This pilot study presents a motion-capture (MoCap)-referenced decoding framework that uses four bilateral upper trapezius (UT) and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) sEMG channels with

Cardiac Output During Exercise: Thermodilution Versus Direct Fick.

BACKGROUND: Accurate cardiac output (CO) measurements during exercise are essential for the diagnosis of exercise pulmonary hypertension (PH), exercise precapillary PH, and exercise postcapillary PH. The purpose of this study is to compare performance of thermodilution CO to gold-standard direct Fick CO (dfCO) at rest and exercise. METHODS: A single-center prospective cohort study of patients undergoing invasive cardiopulmonary exercise test over a 3-year period. For the primary outcome, we predicted CO at each stage of exercise and recovery using generalized additive modeling. In secondary a

Comparison of perioperative analgesia between posterior stabilized and posterior cruciate retaining prostheses following total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Posterior-stabilized (PS) and posterior cruciate retaining (CR) prostheses constitute the most widely used knee prostheses. This study aimed to determine the effects of PS and CR prostheses on postoperative analgesia following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and provide a reliable clinical basis for optimizing postoperative analgesic effects. METHODS: Overall, 120 consecutive patients were enrolled in this study and classified into PS (n = 60) and CR (n = 60) groups according to the type of prosthesis used. All patients underwent TKA along with spinal anesthesia. All patients receiv

Suppression of Deactivation of Working Memory and Promotion of Activation of Sustained Attention in the Default Mode Network Are Affected by Schizotypy in a Large Sample of Nonclinical Subjects.

INTRODUCTION: Schizotypy is a personality trait characterized by subclinical expression of the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia. Maladaptive schizotypy is given the clinical designation of schizotypal personality disorder. Previous studies have shown that functional disturbance of the default mode network (DMN) is associated with maladaptive schizotypy. Working memory impairment is a particularly common feature of maladaptive schizotypy and schizophrenia. As these characteristics can also be observed in the healthy population, our purpose was to identify the neural correlates of schizotypy

The combination of interpectoral plane and superficial serratus anterior plane blocks for the prevention of persistent pain after total mastectomy: a triple-blinded, randomised, placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic post-mastectomy pain may be preventable with regional analgesia. Ultrasound-guided fascial plane blocks are accepted alternatives to paravertebral block for patients undergoing mastectomy. While fascial plane blocks may be used individually, combining them may be more effective. This study tested the hypothesis that combining interpectoral plane and superficial serratus anterior plane blocks would reduce the incidence of chronic post-mastectomy pain compared with the superficial serratus anterior plane block alone. METHODS: We enrolled adult women scheduled to undergo to
