Nutritional profile and management of patients with primary immunodeficiencies (PID) undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) has not been described in the literature. We aim to report the nutritional challenges and practices peculiar to this population before and after HSCT and suggest clinical pathways for their management. We conducted a single-centre retrospective study. Inclusion criteria were children aged less than 20 years with a diagnosis of PID who have undergone HSCT at the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne since April 2014 with a minimal follow-up of 1 year. Nutrition

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by fat accumulation affecting >5% of the liver volume that is not explained by alcohol abuse. It is known that fructose gives rise to NAFLD and it has been recently described that the ingestion of fructose in low amounts in aldolase B deficient mice is associated with the development of fatty liver. Therefore, it is reasonable that patients with HFI (Hereditary Fructose Intolerance) present fatty liver at diagnosis, but its prevalence in patients treated and with adequate follow-up is not well documented in the literature.

Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of rare diseases characterized by skin and mucous membrane fragility. EB primarily involves the skin and, in specific subtypes, the mucous membrane, resulting in complications which can strongly affect nutritional status (e.g. gastrointestinal complications, hand deformities, pain). The aims of nutritional support mainly include improving nutritional status, alleviating the stress of oral feeding and minimizing nutritional deficiencies, thus consequently improving growth, pubertal development, bowel functi

BACKGROUND: Although the association between nutrition and muscle and bone health has been widely studied, the role of adequate nutrition in the prevention of falls remains uncertain. Therefore, this study examined the association between a Mediterranean-style dietary pattern and the risk of falling in older adults.
METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study with 2,071 participants aged ≥60 y from the Seniors-ENRICA study. In 2008-2010, adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed with the MEDAS score, and study participants were followed-up through 2012 to assess incident falls dur

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Emerging findings have raised concerns about significant associations between excessive copper (Cu) and abnormal glucose metabolism. Nevertheless, related researches on the relationship of Cu concentration and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are limited. The objective of this study was to determine whether plasma Cu concentration is associated with GDM.
METHODS: A case-control study of 248 cases of GDM and 248 age-, parity- and gestational age-matched controls was conducted in Wuhan, China between August 2012 and April 2015. Fasting blood samples of participants were co

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Loss of muscle and bone mass is prevalent in the stroke population. Few studies have investigated the difference between having a stroke and hemiplegia and their influence on segmental body composition. This study aimed to evaluate the changes of body composition in the extremities and trunk of stroke patients in comparison with those of the healthy controls.
METHODS: Stroke patients with an onset of longer than 6 months and healthy participants matched by age and gender were recruited. Body weight, height, grip strength, and gait speed were measured, and a dual-energy x-ra

Many theories have been advanced concerning the cause of Charlotte Brontë's death, none of which fully explain all the symptoms she experienced in the course of her final illness. Her death certificate records the cause of death as phthisis (tuberculosis), but there is no evidence, other than circumstantial, to support this diagnosis. A diagnosis of Addison's disease, caused by tuberculosis of the adrenals, has been proposed, but this is unlikely, since it does not fit well with two and a half months of severe anorexia, nausea and vomiting, followed by remission of these symptoms and eventual

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) limits food ingestion and may alter the intestinal expression of genes involved in the endogenous synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). These changes may decrease the systemic availability of bioactive PUFAs after RYGB. To study the impact of RYGB on the dietary ingestion and plasma concentration of PUFAs and on the intestinal expression of genes involved in their endogenous biosynthesis in severely obese women with type 2 diabetes.
METHODS: Before, and 3 and 12 months after RYGB, obese women (n = 20) self-reported a seven-day die

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Enteral feeding is commonly required during radiotherapy treatment for head and neck cancer. Only limited qualitative research into head and neck cancer patients' experiences of enteral tube feeding has been undertaken. The aim of this qualitative study was to evaluate patients' experiences of EF and the surrounding decision making process.
METHODS: Semi-structured, face-to face interviews were conducted with ten patients who had completed (chemo)radiotherapy/radiotherapy for head and neck cancer at a cancer centre in the North of England. Interviews were recorded, transcri

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated systemic disease, caused by ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. Gut microbiota dysbiosis might play a significant role in pathogenesis of chronic enteropathies and its modulation can be used as an intervention strategy in CD as well. In this study, we aimed to identify correlations between fecal microbiota, serum tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in healthy children and children with CD after administration of probiotic Bifidobacterium breve BR03 and B632.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Teduglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) analog, is an approved medication specific for short bowel syndrome patients with chronic intestinal failure (SBS-IF). Due to its intestinotrophic properties, it improves intestinal absorption of fluids and nutrients, which was shown to reduce the need for parenteral support in clinical trials. The present report aims to describe the experience of teduglutide's effects in routine medical care with focus on clinical and nutritional effects.
METHODS: Data of adult SBS-IF patients, treated with teduglutide between Sept. 2014 and M

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The subjective global assessment (SGA) is commonly used to assess nutritional status in patients with cirrhosis. Sarcopenia, a major component of malnutrition, is associated with survival in cirrhosis, and can be objectively diagnosed by computing the skeletal muscle index (SMI) using cross-sectional imaging. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of sarcopenia between SGA categories in patients with cirrhosis, and to determine their association with decompensation/mortality.
METHODS: We included 315 patients (66% males) who were assessed for liver transplantati

Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is the first line therapy for paediatric Crohn's disease, providing a complete nutritional feed whilst simultaneously inducing remission in up to 80% of cases. The effect of EEN on systemic/local intestinal immune function and subsequent inflammation (including barrier permeability, direct anti-inflammatory effects and cytokine signalling pathways), alongside changes in the microbiome (specific species and broad taxonomic shifts, functional changes) are becoming clearer, however the exact mechanism for induction of remission in Crohn's disease remains uncertai

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hospitalized patients show a high rate of malnutrition, which is associated with poor patient outcomes and high healthcare costs. However, relatively few studies have investigated the association between clinical and economic outcomes and malnutrition in hospitalized patients, particularly those with cardiac and pulmonary conditions.
METHODS: This multicenter prospective observational cohort study included 800 patients hospitalized at four Colombian hospitals with a diagnosis of congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, community-acquired pneumonia, or chronic

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is the most prevalent dystrophy of childhood and is characterized by generalized motor delays due to progressive muscular weakness, leading to loss of muscle mass. Additionally, patients with DMD develop obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and Insulin Resistance (IR). Omega-3 Long-Chain PolyUnsaturated Fatty Acids (Ω-3LCPUFA) increase fat mass, decrease lean mass, and decrease hyperinsulinemia and IR. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of Ω-3LCPUFA consumption on lean mass, fat mass, hyperinsulinemia, and IR in children with DMD.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Lack of consensus on clinical indicators for the assessment of pediatric disease associated malnutrition (DAM) may explain its under-recognition in clinical practice. This study surveyed the opinions of health professionals (HP) on clinical indicators of DAM and barriers impeding routine nutritional screening in children.
METHODS: Web-based questionnaire survey (April 2013-August 2015) in Australia, Belgium, Israel, Spain, The Netherlands, Turkey and UK.
RESULTS: There were 937 questionnaires returned via local professional associations, of which 693 respondents fulfilled

AIMS: We aimed to examine the associations of leisure-time physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) with the prevalence of sarcopenia, body composition and muscle strength among older adults having overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome, from the PREDIMED-Plus trial.
METHODS: Cross-sectional baseline analysis including 1539 men and women (65 ± 5 y). Sarcopenia was defined as low muscle mass (according to FNIH cut-offs) plus low muscle strength (lowest sex-specific tertile for 30-s chair-stand test). We applied multivariable-adjusted Cox regression with robust variance and constan

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition is widespread among older people and related to poor outcome. Reported prevalences vary widely, also because of different diagnostic criteria used. This study aimed to describe prevalences in several populations of older persons in different settings using harmonized definitions.
METHODS: Available studies within the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Knowledge Hub 'Malnutrition in the Elderly' (MaNuEL) were used to calculate and compare prevalences of malnutrition indicators: low BMI (<20 kg/m2; age-specific BMI <20 if age 65-<70 and <22 kg/m2 if age ≥70 years
