Ukrainians under continuous traumatic stress: towards increasing the diagnostic condition's clinical utility.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization would include a diagnosis of Continuous Traumatic Stress (ConTS) Reaction or Disorder in its ICD-11 classification system if there were more empirical evidence to support it. However, research on people experiencing ongoing traumatic experiences is always difficult from an ethical standpoint. Our modest study re-examined the structural validity of the Goral et al. CTS (2021) questionnaire and some predictive relationships in samples of Ukrainians in their home country compared to externally displaced Ukrainians (to Austria). METHOD: N = 46 Ukrainians

Structure of family health and its association with obesity-related eating behavior and depressive symptoms: Insights from network analysis.

The health of families is inextricably linked to the health of individuals and communities, providing the foundation for their development. Family health is a multifaceted concept and has been suggested to impact individuals' obesity-related eating behavior and the alleviation of depressive symptoms. However, existing studies have not comprehensively examined the structure of family health and its' potential associations with obesity-related eating behavior and depressive symptoms. The present study employed network analysis to ascertain the most pivotal characteristics within the interdiscipl

Engineered Self-Regulating Macrophages for Targeted Anti-inflammatory Drug Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by increased levels of inflammation that primarily manifests in the joints. Macrophages act as key drivers for the progression of RA, contributing to the perpetuation of chronic inflammation and dysregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1). The goal of this study was to develop a macrophage-based cell therapy for biologic drug delivery in an autoregulated manner. METHODS: For proof-of-concept, we developed "smart" macrophages to mitigate the effects of IL-1 by delivering its inhibi

Family Dynamics and Functioning of Adolescents from Two-Child and One-Child Families in China.

BACKGROUND: To promote the balanced development with the population, China has phased out a one-child policy in 2016, and a two-child policy was launched, which has led to dramatic changes in family structure. The transition could be a huge challenge for adolescents who are in a period of psychological vulnerability. PURPOSE: This study explored the differences and predictors of family dynamics and functioning between two-child and one-child families in the context of China's two-child policy. METHODS: We used the Self-rating scale of Systemic Family Dynamics (SSFD) and Family Assessment Dev

A comparison of the effects of occupation-based interventions with and without responsibility feedback and conventional interventions on participation in people with idiopathic Parkinson's disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with debilitating motor and non-motor symptoms which affect participation in meaningful occupations. Occupation-based interventions can improve participation in people with PD. Evidence for incorporating structured and intensive occupational therapy by considering the concept of responsibility is lacking for this population. This trial will compare the effects of occupation-based interventions with and without responsibility feedback and conventional interventions on participation in people with idiopathic PD. Qualitative interviews in patients with lipodystrophy to assess the patient experience: evaluation of hunger and other symptoms.

BACKGROUND: New treatments are being evaluated for lipodystrophy; however, limited information is available on the patient experience. Results of a prior patient panel showed that hunger and temperature-related symptoms were an issue for participants. Therefore, evaluation of any changes in these symptoms is recommended for inclusion in new treatment options. The objective of this study was to further understand the patient experience and to evaluate newly developed items of hunger and temperature regulation. METHODS: Individual, in-depth telephone interviews were conducted via semi-structure

A search for new options to manage fecal incontinence.

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a highly prevalent condition known to substantially impair a patient's quality of life. Although a non-invasive treatment option, currently available anal plugs are poorly tolerated, not significantly effective and therefore not often used. We present a new disposable device based on an innovative concept that renews the interest for non-invasive "external" control of bowel content for FI patients. The Contix™ (Forconti Medical Ltd, Cesarea, Israel) permits creation of temporary "artificial" fecal impaction to avoid bowel leakage while inserted high into the "non sen

Pilot Study of Mindfulness Training on the Self-Awareness of Motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease - A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate feasibility and effects of a newly developed mindfulness intervention tailored to specific needs of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Background: The phenomenon of impaired self-awareness of motor symptoms (ISAm) in PD might be reduced by increasing patients' mindfulness. A PD-specific mindfulness intervention has been developed and evaluated as a potential treatment option: IPSUM ("Insight into Parkinson's Disease Symptoms by using Mindfulness"). Methods: IPSUM's effectiveness is evaluated by comparing an intervention with a waitlist-control group.

Challenging rehabilitation environment for older patients.

INTRODUCTION: After hospitalization, 11% of the older patients are referred to rehabilitation facilities. Nowadays, there is a trend to formalize the rehabilitation process for these patients in a Challenging Rehabilitation Environment (CRE). This concept involves the comprehensive organization of care, support and the environment on a rehabilitation ward. However, since literature on the principles of CRE is scarce, this review aimed to explore and describe the principles of CRE. METHODS: A search was made in PubMed for relevant literature concerning CRE. Then, articles were hand searched fo

The association of demoralization with mental disorders and suicidal ideation in patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Demoralization refers to a state in which there is a perceived inability to cope, that is associated with a sense of disheartenment and a loss of hope and meaning. This study investigated the co-occurrence versus independence of demoralization with mental disorders and suicidal ideation to evaluate its features as a concept of distress in the context of severe illness. METHODS: In a cross-sectional sample of 430 mixed cancer patients, we assessed demoralization with the Demoralization Scale (DS); the 4-week prevalence of mood, anxiety, and adjustment disorders and suicidal ideatio

Chemoprotection of murine hematopoietic cells by combined gene transfer of cytidine deaminase (CDD) and multidrug resistance 1 gene (MDR1).

BACKGROUND: Hematologic toxicity represents a major side effect of cytotoxic chemotherapy frequently preventing adequately dosed chemotherapy application and impeding therapeutic success. Transgenic (over)expression of chemotherapy resistance (CTX-R) genes in hematopoietic stem- and progenitor cells represents a potential strategy to overcome this problem. To apply this concept in the context of acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplasia, we have investigated the overexpression of the multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) and the cytidine deaminase (CDD) gene conferring resistance to anthracyclines and

Making a difference: the construction of ethnicity in HIV and STI epidemiological research by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

Biomedical and public health researchers and practitioners routinely record and comment on ethnicity: however, the use of this category is often vague and without explicit statement on what ethnicity is or how it correlates to health disparities. Presented here is an inquiry into the case of ethnicity in HIV/STI research in the Netherlands. This paper considers the construction and operationalization of the concept ethnicity in HIV/STI epidemiological research in the Netherlands. The concept ethnicity is followed as it is defined, measured, categorized, communicated and constructed in the annu

The more perceived neijuan, the more lying flat? The mediating role of self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: The rise of "neijuan" - defined as irrational overexertion with minimal reward - and "lying flat", which refers to a withdrawal from stress and limited opportunity, has become a significant social phenomenon in China. However, both the relationship among these concepts and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain under-explored. The study investigates how perceived neijuan impacts adolescents' tendency to lie flat and explores the mediating role of self-efficacy. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using a diary method, we conducted a 12-day (workdays) survey of 191 middle school students

A Beginner's Guide to Applying Large Language Models in Behavioral Interventions.

Digital behavioral interventions are increasingly used to support chronic disease self-management, yet many systems rely on predetermined content that limits personalization and sustained engagement. Large language models (LLMs) offer new opportunities to deliver conversational behavioral support. However, integrating LLMs into behavioral interventions requires careful architectural, methodological, and ethical planning, which may be challenging for researchers without formal training in artificial intelligence. This viewpoint provides a structured introduction to LLMs tailored to behavioral s

The Ethical Obligation to Treat Infectious Patients: A Systematic Review of Reasons.

During pandemics, healthcare providers struggle with balancing obligations to self, family, and patients. While HIV/AIDS seemed to settle this issue, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rekindled debates regarding treatment refusal. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL Complete, and Web of Science using terms including obligation, refusal, HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and pandemics. After duplicate removal and dual, independent screening, we analyzed 156 articles for quality, ethical position, reasons, and concepts. Diseases in our sample included HIV/AIDS (72.2%), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SAR
