Day-to-Day Variability of Respiratory Resistance in Asthma and COPD: Influence of Intra-Breath Data Sampling and Observation Period.

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of lung function variability is recommended for the diagnosis of asthma, but its specificity in separating asthmatic from COPD subjects is low. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the day-to-day variability of respiratory resistance depends on the respiratory phase considered and observation time. METHODS: Respiratory resistance was measured daily by oscillometry at 5 Hz in 47 mild asthmatics, 20 moderate-to-severe COPD, and 35 healthy subjects. The coefficient of variation was calculated over multiple time scales using full breaths, inspiratory phase, or mid-in

TRAQ in clinical practice: A narrative review for health care transition readiness.

BACKGROUND: Advances in medical care have dramatically improved survival rates for children and youth with special health care needs (SHCN), with more than 90% now reaching adulthood. As a result, pediatric-to-adult health care transition has become a critical component of lifespan care. Despite national consensus recommendations, fewer than one in four adolescents receive the transition services needed to prepare them for adult-oriented care. Standardized, validated instruments to assess and promote transition readiness are essential to close this gap. OBJECTIVE: This review describes the pr

An integrated experimental-computational electromagnetic-thermal framework for predicting bioheat response of the human head to wearable wireless devices.

The increasing use of wearable wireless devices operating in close proximity to the human body has raised the need for reliable assessment of electromagnetic exposure and associated thermal effects in biological tissue. In particular, wireless earbuds produce both electromagnetic energy absorption and device self-heating as potential sources of localized temperature elevation near the head. This study presents an integrated experimental-computational-electromagnetic-thermal framework for predicting the bioheat response of the human head. The approach combines infrared thermography measurements

An Innovative Formula for Keratosis Pilaris Treatment-A Randomized Controlled Study Based on the "Exfoliation-Dissolution-Repair" Concept.

OBJECTIVE: Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common follicular keratotic skin disorder characterized by follicular papules and skin roughness, often accompanied by itching and inflammation, significantly affecting appearance and psychological health. METHODS: This 28-day prospective, open-label, randomized controlled study evaluated the effectiveness of a novel combined formula for KP treatment. The formula included a scrub (Olea europaea shell powder, hydrated silica, and papain) and a moisturizing lotion with plant oils (peony seed oil, oat kernel oil, and rice bran oil). Sixty KP patients aged 1

Transforming Clinical Skills Training: Integrating OSCE into Team-Based Learning for teaching undergraduate medical students.

OBJECTIVE: Team-Based Learning (TBL) approach primarily targets the cognitive domain and employs MCQs during iRAT and tRAT stages to promote active learning and problem-solving through collaborative teamwork. We adapted TBL for teaching the psychomotor domain by replacing MCQs with OSCEs during iRAT and tRAT and introducing self-assessment followed by feedback from peers and tutors on clinical skills performance. We assessed the effectiveness of adapted TBL approach on clinical skills performance through comparison with standard clinical teaching. METHODOLOGY: A Quasi-experimental study with

Impact Of A Structured Emotional Well-Being Workshop On Psychological Outcomes And Patient Activation In Rheumatoid Arthritis And Spondyloarthritis: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and spondyloarthritis (SpA), frequently experience psychological distress and reduced well-being despite adequate control of inflammation with biological or targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (b/tsDMARDs). Psychosocial interventions may improve emotional health and self-management, although evidence within routine multidisciplinary care remains limited. This study evaluated the impact of a structured emotional well-being workshop on psychological outcomes and patient activat

Detection of residual consciousness using EEG indicators related to rectal perception: protocol for a diagnostic accuracy study.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate diagnosis of disorders of consciousness (DoC), including unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) and minimally conscious state (MCS), remains a long-standing and unresolved challenge in clinical practice. Current diagnostic frameworks rely predominantly on behavioral responsiveness, with the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) serving as the clinical gold standard. However, behavior-based evaluation is intrinsically vulnerable to examiner subjectivity and cognitive-motor dissociation, contributing to misdiagnosis rates of up to 40%. From a theoretical perspective, consci

Fatigue beyond inflammation in inflammatory rheumatic diseases: a narrative review and treatable-traits framework.

Fatigue frequently persists after clinically visible inflammation has improved in inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs). This narrative review integrates evidence updated through 21 July 2026 on mechanisms, assessment, and management of fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Sjögren's disease (SjD). Across these conditions, associations between fatigue and conventional inflammatory measures are inconsistent and usually weaker than associations with pain, sleep disturbance, mood symptoms, disability, central pain sensitivity, comorbidity, medication effec

Knowledge and HIV-Related Stigmatizing Attitudes Among Healthcare Workers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Healthcare workers are central to the care of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV), yet their own stigmatizing attitudes can undermine it. This cross-sectional study assessed HIV/AIDS knowledge and stigmatizing attitudes toward PLHIV among healthcare workers and the factors associated with stigma. Methods: All physicians and nurses employed at three public hospitals in Mersin, Turkey (N = 2230), were invited to participate; because participation was voluntary and anonymous, the analysed sample was self-selected and is best characterised as a convenience sample. Data were collected o

Agreement Between the Harmonized and the Self-Explanatory Versions of the Revised ALS Functional Rating Scale in a Clinical Setting.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The harmonized version of the ALS Functional Rating Scale - Revised (ALSFRS-R) is typically administered according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure procedural consistency. In contrast, obtaining the self-explanatory (SE) version of the ALSFRS-R does not include the use of SOPs. The aim of this study was to examine the level of agreement between the harmonized and the SE version of the ALSFRS-R in a cohort of ALS patients. METHODS: In a prospective study, the harmonized ALSFRS-R was assessed in 107 ALS patients. In parallel, all patients independently comple

Assessing Core Affective Dimensions in OCD: Development and Validation of the Obsessive-Compulsive Core Dimensions Scale (OC-CDS).

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex condition characterized by obsessions and compulsions driven by different affective dimensions, including guilt, disgust and not just right experiences (NJREs). However, research has often examined these factors separately, without analysing their interaction. To address this gap, we developed and validated the Obsessive-Compulsive Core Dimensions Scale (OC-CDS), a self-report measure designed to simultaneously assess guilt avoidance, disgust avoidance and NJRE avoidance that drive OCD symptoms. Two studies conducted on Italian non-clinical samp

The Construct of Awe in Community Psychology: Toward a More Comprehensive Assessment for Applications to Vulnerable Populations.

This article contributes to the literature by (a) providing evidence of benefits of awe-inspiring interventions for a vulnerable population (i.e., residents of a homeless shelter), (b) reporting the development and validation of two new psychometric instruments that fill a significant void in the assessment of awe, and (c) providing recommendations for future research examining the use of these new instruments in assessing awe in vulnerable populations. Awe refers to peak experiences of sublime wonderment, accompanied by awe-related reactions including a sense of vastness, self-transcendence,

Self-reported non-adherence to immunosuppressive medication detected by the BAASIS predicts allograft rejections in kidney transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: After kidney transplantation adherence to immunosuppressive medication is crucial for graft survival and its assessment requires valid measurements. The Basel Assessment of Adherence-to Immunosuppressive Medications Scale (BAASIS) is a validated self-report tool to detect non-adherence, however, its ability to predict clinically relevant outcomes remains to be established. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study including 226 consecutive kidney graft recipients transplanted at the Medical University of Vienna between 2018 and 2019 the adherence toward immunosuppressive medicatio
