Variability in eating disorder risk and diagnosis in transgender and gender diverse college students.

PURPOSE: To examine differences in elevated eating disorder risk and self-reported eating disorder diagnosis across subgroups of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) college students. METHODS: Data from 5057 TGD college students participating in the national Healthy Minds Study between 2014 and 2019 were analyzed. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses examined heterogeneity in prevalence and odds of elevated eating disorder risk, as measured by the SCOFF, and self-reported eating disorder diagnosis by gender, as well as by intersecting gender and sexual orientation identities. How intoxicated are you? Investigating self and observer intoxication ratings in relation to blood alcohol concentration.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to accurately detect alcohol intoxication is an important skill for people who use these substances and for a variety of professions (e.g. policing, responsible service of alcohol). Previous studies have found that intoxicated people are generally poor at estimating their own intoxication (particularly at high blood alcohol concentration; BAC) and the relationship between perceived intoxication and BAC appears to flatten at higher BAC levels. Studies of observer ratings of other's intoxication have yielded mixed results. The aim of this study was to investigate both s

[Participation in self-help groups: impact on self-management and knowledge].

BACKGROUND: Self-help groups (SHGs) are an inherent part of patient involvement and play an important role in the healthcare system. Until now, however, there has been a lack of systematic investigations and quantitative data about the individual impact of self-help for patients and relatives. OBJECTIVES: This study presents the results of a comparison between members of SHGs and non-members. Thereby, the effects of self-help shall be described in terms of empowerment and self-management. The study is part of the project "Health-related Collective Self-Help in Germany" (Gesundheitsbezogene Se

Depressive Symptoms Are Associated with Self-Reported Physical Limitations That Are Activity Dependent in a Cross-Sectional Analysis of Subjects with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

One in four patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has depression. However, the effect of depressive symptoms on self-reported physical function among patients with COPD is not fully defined. We tested the hypothesis that depressive symptoms among patients with COPD are associated with increased self-reporting of physical limitations in a nationally representative sample of adults living in the USA. We sampled 775 adults with obstructive lung disease and history of regular smoking from 2007 to 2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariable log

Impact of a negative emotional antitobacco mass media campaign on French smokers: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mass media campaigns to encourage smoking cessation have been shown to be effective in a context of comprehensive tobacco control programme. The effectiveness of antismoking ads that evoke negative emotions remains unclear, in particular in countries with high smoking prevalence and among smokers with low perceived susceptibility, low self-efficacy or who are not users of smoking cessation services. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate short-term and long-term effects of a 1-month French national highly emotional media campaign, with a focus on these specific targets. DESIGN: A 6-month longitu

Training future clinicians: An interprofessional approach to treating tobacco use and dependence.

The high prevalence of smoking among persons with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders has not changed in the past decade despite a decline in smoking among the general population. Interprofessional collaborative care offers clinicians the opportunity to engage their patients in tobacco cessation treatment that is coordinated and comprehensive. Investigators applied a 1-group, pre/post-test design with qualitative and quantitative descriptive analyses to estimate the impact of an interprofessional tobacco education program on perceived self-efficacy and self-reported counsel

The effect of childhood emotional maltreatment on romantic relationships in young adulthood: A double mediation model involving self-criticism and attachment.

OBJECTIVE: Despite growing recognition of the importance of childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) on the development of psychopathology, very few studies have addressed its impact on adult romantic relationship functioning, particularly among otherwise relatively well-functioning individuals. In an attempt to further elucidate the mechanism underlying the negative impact of CEM on romantic relationships, we tested an integrative mediational model linking CEM to romantic relationships through the impact of CEM on the development of self-criticism and adult attachment. Diabetes self-management education is not associated with a reduction in long-term diabetes complications: an effectiveness study in an elderly population.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The efficacy of diabetes self-management education on glycaemic control, self-care behaviour and knowledge has been established by short-term studies in experimental settings. The objective of this study was to assess its effectiveness to improve quality of care and reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications in unselected older patients with recently diagnosed diabetes in routine clinical care. METHODS: Using population-level health care administrative databases and registries, all patients aged ≥66 years in Ontario, Canada with diabetes for <5 years w

Eating disorders and sense of self: a learning theory conceptualization.

The learning theory view of sense of self is that problems in one's knowledge about the self arise when: (1) caregivers fail to recognize indicators of a child's private emotional and visceral experiences and (2) subsequently fail to offer appropriate labels that discriminate among those experiences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of the process believed to build a sense of self to level of interoceptive awareness (IA) and to risk for eating disorders. One hundred twenty seven undergraduate and graduate students (112 women) completed the Eating Disorders Inventory-3

Reliability of self-reported tobacco use in bipolar disorder: an exploratory study of euthymic patients visiting a tertiary care hospital in India.

BACKGROUND: Unlike schizophrenia, only a little attention has been paid to tobacco dependence in patients with bipolar disorder despite a similarly high prevalence and predisposition to health risks. The euthymic phase is especially suitable for tobacco screening by the treating psychiatrist. However, the validity of self-report for tobacco use in this patient population remains undetermined. AIM: The current study aims to assess the validity of self-reported tobacco use in euthymic bipolar disorder. METHOD: The psychiatric out-patients with DSM-IV TR diagnosis of bipolar type-I in remission

Ambience and drug choice: cocaine- and heroin-taking as a function of environmental context in humans and rats.

BACKGROUND: We have recently observed an unforeseen dissociation in the effect of environmental context on heroin versus cocaine self-administration in rats. Rats housed in the self-administration chambers (Residents) took more heroin than rats that were transferred to the self-administration chambers only for the test sessions (Nonresidents). The contrary was found for cocaine. The twofold aim of the present study was to investigate: 1) drug choice as a function of ambience in rats given access to both cocaine and heroin, and 2) ambience of choice for cocaine- versus heroin-taking in human ad

Subjective responses and cardiovascular effects of self-administered cocaine in cocaine-abusing men and women.

This study aimed to examine sex differences in cocaine self-administration and cocaine-induced subjective and cardiovascular measures. The research was based on secondary analysis of data collected in our human laboratory in which subjects self-administered cocaine infusions (8, 16 and 32 mg/70 kg) over a 2-hour period under a fixed ratio 1, 5 minute time out schedule in three test sessions. Subjects were 10 women and 21 men with a history of either cocaine abuse or dependence who were not currently seeking treatment. Women and men self-administered similar amounts of cocaine. Coping with oral surgery by self-efficacy enhancement and perceptions of control.

Recent work has suggested that patients' coping could be improved in stressful dental situations if perceptions of self-efficacy and control could be enhanced. To test this hypothesis, 70 first-time third-molar extraction patients were randomly assigned to one of four surgery preparation conditions: standard preparation, oral premedication, relaxation, and a relaxation+efficacy-enhancing feed-back condition in which subjects were given false galvanic skin response (GSR) biofeedback leading them to believe that they were highly skilled at relaxing. Analyses indicated that: (1) all treatments we

Optimising dementia screening in community-dwelling older adults: A rapid review of brief diagnostic tools in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: Timely detection of dementia enables early access to dementia-specific care services and interventions. Various stakeholders brought together to refine Singapore's dementia care strategy identified a lack of a standardised cognitive screening tool and the absence of a comparative review of existing tools. We hence conducted a rapid review to evaluate the diagnostic performance of brief cognitive screening tools in identifying possible dementia among community-dwelling older adults in Singapore. METHOD: Brief cognitive screening tools were defined as interviews or tests administe
