Sexually transmitted hepatitis C infection: the evolving epidemic in HIV-positive and HIV-negative MSM.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The scale-up of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy and introduction of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has changed the epidemiology of sexually acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) amongst HIV-positive and HIV-negative MSM. RECENT FINDINGS: Sexually acquired HCV continues to occur predominantly amongst HIV-positive MSM. Despite an increased uptake of DAA therapy the incidence of acute HCV has not declined consistently amongst HIV-positive MSM, likely a result of high infection and reinfection rates. Increasing cases of sexually acquired HCV have been reported amongst HIV-nega

The health response to the Rohingya refugee crisis post August 2017: Reflections from two years of health sector coordination in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

On August 25 2017, an unprecedented influx of Rohingya refugees began from Rakhine State in Myanmar into Bangladesh's district of Cox's Bazar. The scale and acuteness of this humanitarian crisis was unprecedented and unique globally, requiring strong coordination of a multitude of actors. This paper reflects on the health sector coordination from August 2017 to October 2019, focusing on selected achievements and persisting challenges of the health sector strategic advisory group (HSSAG), and the health sector working groups including epidemiology and case management, sexual and reproductive he

Using network analysis to identify risk and protective factors for mental health in LGBTQ+ youth.

OBJECTIVE: Youth with marginalized gender and sexual identities, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning youth (LGBTQ+) are at heightened risk for mental health concerns due to oppressive social contexts. To guide clinical practice and address health disparities for LGBTQ+ youth, researchers must identify central and influential risk and protective factors that have the greatest potential to affect mental health. METHOD: Network analysis was used to model the complex relationships between risk factors, protective factors, mental health, and personal identities (gende

FACIAL ASYMMETRY IS NEGATIVELY RELATED TO CONDITION IN FEMALE MACAQUE MONKEYS.

The face is an important visual trait in social communication across many species. In evolutionary terms there are large and obvious selective advantages in detecting healthy partners, both in terms of avoiding individuals with poor health to minimise contagion and in mating with individuals with high health to help ensure healthy offspring. Many models of sexual selection suggest that an individual's phenotype provides cues to their quality. Fluctuating asymmetry is a trait that is proposed to be an honest indicator of quality and previous studies have demonstrated that rhesus monkeys gaze lo

Patient-reported quality of life in people living with HIV in Romania: a cross-sectional PROM-based study.

BACKGROUND: In Romania, people living with HIV represent heterogeneous cohorts shaped by distinct epidemiological and social contexts. While antiretroviral therapy (ART) has markedly improved survival, quality-of-life (QoL) encompasses broader dimensions not fully captured by clinical indicators. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) offer a valuable approach to understanding these dimensions in routine care. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional study using the OCTAVE PROM to assess patient-reported health-related QoL among people with HIV in Romania. The self-completed qu

Factors associated with unintended pregnancy and contraceptive practices in justice-involved adolescent girls in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a decline in unintended teenage pregnancy in Australia, rates remain higher amongst justice-involved adolescent girls, who are more likely to be from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, have histories of abuse, substance use and/or mental health issues. Furthermore, exposure to the criminal justice system may alter access to education and employment and opportunities, potentially resulting in distinct risk-factor profiles. We examine factors associated with unintended pregnancy, non-contraceptive use and Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) in a sample of sex

Healthcare providers balancing norms and practice: challenges and opportunities in providing contraceptive counselling to young people in Uganda - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancies among young women force girls to compromise education, resulting in low educational attainment with subsequent poverty and vulnerability. A pronounced focus is needed on contraceptive use, pregnancy, and unsafe abortion among young women. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore healthcare providers' (HCPs) perceptions and practices regarding contraceptive counselling to young people. DESIGN: We conducted 27 in-depth interviews with doctors and midwives working in seven health facilities in central Uganda. Interviews were open-ended and allowed the participant to speak f

Prevalence and factors associated with risky sexual behaviors among adolescent girls and young women in Rwanda: evidence from a national population-based cross-sectional HIV impact assessment, 2018-2019.

INTRODUCTION: globally, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15 to 24 face higher risks of acquiring HIV and unintended pregnancies, primarily due to risky sexual behaviors (RSBs) such as engaging in sex for money and having sex without a condom. This study assessed factors associated with RSBs among AGYW in Rwanda. METHODS: this study analysed weighted data from the 2019 Rwanda Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (RPHIA), a cross-sectional study that collected data from October 2018 to March 2019. The analysis used the Jackknife method in survey logistic regression. Statistical si

Factors associated with HIV self-testing and PrEP use among Nigerian youth: Baseline outcomes of a pragmatic, stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young adults (AYA, 14-24 years) bear a disproportionate burden of new HIV infections in Nigeria and are more likely to have worse HIV outcomes compared to other age groups. However, little is known about their access to recommended sexual health care services, including HIV self-testing (HIVST), sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing, sexual behavior patterns, awareness and or access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and overall risk for HIV. METHODS: We present a baseline analysis of the 4 Youth by Youth randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the

Prevalence of Tobacco and Poly-Tobacco Use as a Function of Sexual Orientation Identity and Sex.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research has characterized poly-tobacco use (ie, use of at least two nicotine/tobacco products) among adults with sexual minoritized (SM) identities (ie, lesbian, gay, and bisexual). Additional work is needed to examine disparities in use by sexual orientation identity and determine whether these disparities differ by sex. We aimed to examine the prevalence of tobacco product use and poly-tobacco use by sexual orientation identity and sex among a nationally representative sample of US adults. AIMS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from 32 352 adult respondents (34.9% 18-24 ye

The influence of psychosocial and sexual wellbeing on quality of life in women with differences of sexual development.

BACKGROUND: Previous research indicating that women with differences of sexual development (DSD), namely women with Turner syndrome (TS), women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and women with XY-DSD, have an impaired psychosocial and sexual well-being and quality of life (QOL), was often limited by small samples and inadequate control groups (CGs). Only few studies analysed which psychosocial and sexual factors influence QOL in women with DSD and no study so far has examined whether the DSD-condition itself and the diagnostic group to which they belong moderate this influence. Giving syphilis and gonorrhea to friends: Using in-person friendship networks to find additional cases of gonorrhea and syphilis.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis and gonorrhea reached an all-time high in 2018. The resurgence of syphilis and gonorrhea requires innovative methods of sexual contact tracing that encourage disclosure of same-sex sexual contacts that might otherwise be suppressed. Over 75% of Grindr mobile phone application users report seeking "friendship," so this study asked people diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhea to identify their friends. METHODS: Patients at the two Baltimore sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics and the Baltimore City Health Department were asked 12 questions to elicit members of thei
