Effectiveness of psychological interventions for smoking cessation in adults with mental health problems: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: People with long-term mental health problems are heavier smokers than the general population, and suffer greater smoking-related morbidity and mortality. Little is known about the effectiveness of psychological smoking cessation interventions for this group. This review evaluates evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effectiveness of psychological interventions, used alone or with pharmacotherapy, in reducing smoking in adults with mental health problems. METHODS: We searched relevant articles between January 1999 and March 2019 and identified 6,200 papers. Two rev

Tobacco Smoking Rates in a National Cohort of People with Substance Use Disorder Receiving Treatment.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prevalence of tobacco smoking among individuals receiving treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) remains high. Respiratory disease and other harms are of prime concern to health policy-makers, given the contributory role played by tobacco smoking in the excess rates of premature mortality seen in individuals with SUD. The aim was to use SUD treatment data to investigate tobacco smoking prevalence among subgroups of adults over the course of treatment. METHODS: We used the English National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS) to examine number of days tobacco ha

Influence of the donor history of tobacco and marijuana smoking on early and intermediate lung transplant outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Donor smoking histories are common in the lung donor pool, which are known to adversely affect post-lung transplant (LTx) outcomes. However, no evidence is available about smoking status (current/former), cumulative dose effect, or the combined effect of tobacco with marijuana. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our local state-based donation organization records and subsequent LTx recipient outcomes. The primary outcome was 3-year graft survival, with cause of death as secondary outcomes. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to explore smoking status or

The changes in pulmonary functions in occupational divers: smoking, diving experience, occupational group effects.

BACKGROUND: Diving challenges the respiratory system because of the pressure changes, breathing gases, and cardiovascular effects. We aimed to analyse the long term effect of occupational diving on pulmonary functions in terms of diving experience (year), smoking history, and occupational groups (commercial divers and SCUBA instructors). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed respiratory system examination results of the experienced occupational divers who were admitted to the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Department for periodic medical examination between January 1, 2013 and

Changes in smoking behavior among victims after the great East Japan earthquake and tsunami.

BACKGROUND: In areas affected by the tsunami of the great East Japan Earthquake, smoking behavior may have deteriorated due to high stress and drastic changes in living environment. Surveys were conducted to reveal changes in smoking behaviors among victims. METHODS: A population-based random-sample home-visit interview survey of victims in Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures affected by the tsunami disaster was conducted in 2012 (n = 1978), while a population-based nationwide survey was conducted in 2013 (n = 1082). A panel survey in 2014 was conducted with respondents of the 2012 survey (n = 930).

Peripheral Blood Flow Changes to Cutaneous and Muscular Beds in Response to Acute Hookah Smoking.

Hookah (waterpipe) smoking is a growing tobacco epidemic. Though perceived as a safer tobacco alternative, hookah smoke contains, in addition to tobacco combustion products, large amounts of charcoal combustion products-implicated in cardiovascular disease-from the burning charcoal used to heat the flavored tobacco. To date, little is known on the vascular effects of hookah smoking. The aim of this study was to characterize the peripheral circulatory response to acute hookah smoking in cutaneous and muscular beds. In 21 healthy young adult habitual hookah smokers who did not smoke cigarettes (

Identification of miRNAs and the target genes related to male infertility and smoking using bioinformatics approaches.

The impact of smoking on male fertility has been extensively acknowledged. Many studies have shown that smoking reduces sperm production, motility and fertilizing capacity by increasing seminal oxidative stress and DNA damage. In this study, expression profiles of miRNAs and their predicted target genes, showing dysregulation in smokers and associated with male infertility, were obtained, using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets. Differentially expressed miRNAs, related to male infertility in sperm samples of smoking and non-smoking men, were picked out using the GEO2R online tool. Then, t

Smoking and sleep apnea duration mediated the sex difference in daytime sleepiness in OSA patients.

PURPOSE: Daytime sleepiness is a common symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is more common in men, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess whether or not sex differences in daytime sleepiness persisted after controlling for age and OSA severity and to explore the factors contributing to daytime sleepiness in patients with OSA. METHODS: A total of 104 pairs of patients with OSA, matched by age and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), were enrolled in this retrospective study. Demographic data were collected; daytime sleepiness was measured by the Epwor

PET Imaging Reveals Early Pulmonary Perfusion Abnormalities in HIV Infection Similar to Smoking.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the most common noninfectious pulmonary disease among people living with HIV, independent of smoking. However, the cause for this enhanced susceptibility remains unclear, and the effects of HIV on pulmonary perfusion and ventilation are unknown. Methods: We used PET/CT in 46 smokers and nonsmokers, 23 of whom had documented HIV infection. Emphysema was assessed by CT and perfusion by 13N (13NN) PET scans. After removal of image noise, vertical and axial gradients in perfusion were calculated. We tested for differences in the total spatial heterog

Effects of Hypertension, Diabetes, and Smoking on Age and Sex Prediction from Retinal Fundus Images.

Retinal fundus images are used to detect organ damage from vascular diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus and hypertension) and screen ocular diseases. We aimed to assess convolutional neural network (CNN) models that predict age and sex from retinal fundus images in normal participants and in participants with underlying systemic vascular-altered status. In addition, we also tried to investigate clues regarding differences between normal ageing and vascular pathologic changes using the CNN models. In this study, we developed CNN age and sex prediction models using 219,302 fundus images from normal

Two important controversial risk factors in SARS-CoV-2 infection: Obesity and smoking.

The effects of obesity and smoking in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic remain controversial. Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), is the human cell receptor of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19. ACE2 expression increases on lung alveolar epithelial cells and adipose tissue due to obesity, smoking and air pollution. A significant relationship exists between air pollution and SARS-CoV-2 infection, as more severe COVID-19 symptoms occur in smokers; comorbid conditions

Short-Term Cigarette Smoking in Rats Impairs Physical Capacity and Induces Cardiac Remodeling.

Despite the strong evidence on the cardiac and renal damages after chronic exposure to cigarette smoke, there is a paucity of data on its short-term effects. The study evaluated the short-term effects of cigarette smoking on left ventricular (LV) remodeling, in vitro myocardial and renal function. Female Wistar rats were randomized to control (C) and cigarette smoking rats for eight weeks. Physical capacity was assessed using an adapted model of exhaustive swim; left ventricle (LV) morphology and function were also evaluated. Renal function was assessed by creatinine clearance and urine protei
