Bimodal reading: benefits of a talking computer for average and less skilled readers.

Studies have shown that when information is presented through visual and auditory channels simultaneously (i.e., bimodal presentation), speed of processing and memory recall are enhanced. The present study demonstrated the efficacy of a bimodal approach to fostering reading comprehension. Eighteen average readers (9 girls and 9 boys) and 18 less skilled readers (8 girls and 10 boys) in Grades 8 and 9 participated in the study. Students were presented with social studies and science passages via a computer. Passages were presented in three conditions: visually (on screen), auditorily (read by d

Risk factors for benign breast disease.

The importance of various risk factors for benign breast disorders has been assessed an analysis of data obtained from a multicenter cohort study of contraceptive use among women in the United Kingdom (the Oxford Family Planning Association Contraceptive Study). Cases comprised all women diagnosed as having any type of benign breast lesion; 74 had fibroadenoma, 211 had histologically confirmed chronic cystic disease, 331 had breast lumps not subjected to biopsy and 70 had other disease. Each case was individually matched with another study participant who was free from recognized breast diseas

The natural history of violence.

In the past, human violence was associated with food shortage, but recently it has increased even in relatively well-fed societies. The reason appears from studies of monkeys under relaxed, spacious conditions and under crowding stress. Uncrowded monkeys have unaggressive leaders, rarely quarrel, and protect females and young. Crowded monkeys (even well-fed) have brutal bosses, often quarrel, and wound and kill each other, including females and young. Crowding has similar behaviour effects on other mammals, with physiological disturbances including greater susceptibility to infections. All thi

Quality and educational value of TikTok videos on rehabilitation exercises for triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries: A cross-sectional study.

BackgroundWhile TikTok's surge in health-related material creates valuable opportunities for patient education, the platform's absence of structured peer-review mechanisms raises concerns regarding the quality of available content. Increasingly, patients rely on social media for guidance on self-managing conditions such as Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) injuries; however, the quality of this information has not yet been rigorously evaluated.ObjectiveThe aim of this research was to systematically assess TikTok videos demonstrating rehabilitation exercises for TFCC injuries, specifical

Impact of Social Vulnerability on Future Risk of Metabolic Complications and Survival in Female Liver Transplant Recipients.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare outcomes research has historically used males as the reference; however, such a comparison ignores key biological processes. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate metabolic health in female liver transplant (LT) recipients, using female sex itself as the reference standard. METHODS: Social vulnerability index (SVI) is a composite marker of external stressors to individual health, with a high SVI indicative of higher social vulnerability. Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed to determine the association between SVI and the likelihood of developing metabolic complicat

Dignity therapy as a nursing intervention to address spiritual needs in palliative care: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care focuses not only on physical symptoms, but also addresses the psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of the individual. Spiritual care-understood as the search for meaning, purpose, and peace-is often neglected in clinical practice. Dignity therapy is a brief, individualised psychotherapeutic intervention designed to preserve dignity and respond to existential and spiritual needs at the end of life. AIM: To narratively examine the reported outcomes and feasibility of dignity therapy as a nursing intervention to address spiritual needs in patients receiving

Network Architecture of Anxiety-Related Distress in 346,677 Chinese Youth: Divergence by Educational Track and Developmental Stage.

Physical symptoms in children and adolescents are frequently misattributed to standalone medical conditions, obscuring how they relate to broader anxiety-related distress. Clarifying how physical symptoms are interconnected with other facets of anxiety-related distress-and how developmental and social contexts shape these interconnections-can inform more integrated assessment and intervention. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed a provincially representative sample of 346,677 Chinese students from primary, junior high, senior high, and vocational high schools. Participants completed the

Internal experience of an aging self: A grounded theory study on women's aging awareness beyond midlife.

PURPOSE: Awareness of one's own aging is a critical psychological process that shapes adaptation and well-being in later life. For women, age awareness is influenced by gendered experiences such as bodily changes, menopause, and shifting social roles. This study aimed to develop a grounded theory explaining how women aged 50-75 construct and adapt their awareness of aging through everyday life contexts. METHODS: This study was guided by constructivist grounded theory, informed by symbolic interactionism and social constructionism. Nineteen in-depth interviews were conducted between 2021 and 2

Bio-inspired cognitive robotics vs. embodied AI for socially acceptable, civilized robots.

Although cognitive robotics is still a work in progress, the trend is to "free" robots from the assembly lines of the third industrial revolution and allow them to "enter human society" in large numbers and many forms, as forecasted by Industry 4.0 and beyond. Cognitive robots are expected to be intelligent, designed to learn from experience and adapt to real-world situations rather than being preprogrammed with specific actions for all possible stimuli and environmental conditions. Moreover, such robots are supposed to interact closely with human partners, cooperating with them, and this impl

Glucocorticoids-induced depressive-like behaviors in mice: oral ingestion of corticosterone or hydrocortisone - A comparative study.

Chronic administration of glucocorticoids is widely used to model stress-related depression in rodents. However, corticosterone, the primary endogenous glucocorticoid in rodents, is highly lipophilic and typically requires ethanol dissolution, which may confound behavioral outcomes. Hydrocortisone (cortisol) is also detectable in mouse blood and it displays a closely related dynamics under physiological and stressful conditions to corticosterone. This study compared the behavioral effects of oral exposure to hydrocortisone hemissucinate with corticosterone (dissolved in 1% ethanol) in mice. To

17β-estradiol regulates the behavioral, neuronal, and physiological responses to acute witness stress in female rats.

Females are more than twice as likely as males to develop stress-related conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD, but the neural mechanisms underlying this heightened stress sensitivity are unknown. Recent evidence demonstrates that cyclical ovarian hormones may contribute to the augmented stress responses observed in females. Thus, the current experiments were designed to determine the role of estrogen in the neuronal, behavioral, and physiological responses to social stress in female rats. Adult, female, Sprague-Dawley rats underwent ovariectomy or a sham procedure and were implante

Use of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in Clinical Care: A Community-Based Allied Health Setting.

OBJECTIVES: Measuring patient health outcomes is important for effective healthcare. Community-based allied health care provides services for people with complex and often deteriorating conditions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if a single outcome measure was applicable across a multidisciplinary team of eight allied health professions to measure the impact of the team. The chosen measure was the EuroQoL, 5-dimension, 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) which we compared to changes in discipline specific functional and quality of life measures. Role of Technology in Promoting Heart Healthy Behavior Change to Increase Equity in Optimal Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Populations most affected by cardiovascular health disparities, including underrepresented populations with lower socioeconomic status, people with disabilities, and those living in underserved rural communities, are disproportionately exposed to adverse social determinants of health. Specifically, economic instability and suboptimal living conditions within the neighborhood and built environment directly determine access to resources and opportunities for healthful behaviors. In this scientific statement, we examined the technology-enabled interventions that address cardiovascular health beha
