The Long-Term Health Implications of Marital Disruption: Divorce, Work Limits, and Social Security Disability Benefits Among Men.

We provide new evidence on the long-term impact of divorce on work disability among U.S. men. Using data from the 2004 Survey of Income and Program Participation linked to U.S. Social Security Administration records, we assess the relationship between divorce and subsequent self-reports of work limitations and the receipt of federal disability benefits. The examination of self-reports and administrative records of medically qualified benefits provides dual confirmation of key relationships. We compare men who experienced a marital dissolution between 1975 and 1984 with continuously married men

Long-term improvements in oral communication skills and quality of peer relations in children with cochlear implants: parental testimony.

BACKGROUND: Few research studies have examined longitudinal improvements in oral communication skills and quality of peer relationships of children with implants. Moreover, although the emerging literature suggests that improvement in social functioning follows improvement in oral communication, it is still unknown what factors enhance or impede the relations between these constructs. METHODS: Based on parent interviews, the current study examined the long-term improvements in speech and oral language skills and relationships with hearing peers in 19 implanted children. RESULTS: Results demo

The bidirectional relationships between online victimization and psychosocial problems in adolescents: a comparison with real-life victimization.

Although peer victimization is of major concern and adolescents spend increasing amounts of time on the Internet, relatively little is known about the psychosocial antecedents and consequences of online victimization. The main aim of this study was to compare the psychosocial antecedents and consequences of online versus real-life victimization. More specifically, the bidirectional relationship between online and real-life victimization on the one hand and psychosocial problems (i.e., loneliness and social anxiety) on the other was examined. In addition, the moderating role of online aggressio

Being an adolescent with a cochlear implant in the world of hearing people: coping in school, in society and with self identity.

OBJECTIVE: The cochlear implant has revolutionized functioning with severe-to-profound sensori-neural loss. A deaf child implanted at an early age with good habilitation may have good language abilities and function well in daily life. As the implanted child grows up, managing in the world of hearing people may become more complex. During adolescence, the teenager copes with many issues, including identity, socialization with the peer group, and managing in the school setting. These issues may be even more challenging for the adolescents using a cochlear implant. This study was designed to she

Barriers to free antiretroviral treatment access among kothi-identified men who have sex with men and aravanis (transgender women) in Chennai, India.

The Indian government provides free antiretroviral treatment (ART) for people living with HIV. To assist in developing policies and programs to advance equity in ART access, we explored barriers to ART access among kothis (men who have sex with men [MSM] whose gender expression is feminine) and aravanis (transgender women, also known as hijras) living with HIV in Chennai. In the last quarter of 2007, we conducted six focus groups and four key-informant interviews. Data were explored using framework analysis to identify categories and derive themes. We identified barriers to ART access at the f

Bad blood: poverty, psychopathy and the politics of transgression in Kenya Colony, 1939-59.

This article examines the inter-relationship between psychiatry and sex, both fertile fields within the recent historiography of colonialism and empire. Using a series of case files pertaining to European patients admitted to the Mathari Mental Hospital in Nairobi during the 1940s and 1950s, this article shows how sexual transgression among colonial Europeans precipitated, and was combined with, mental distress. Considering psychiatric treatment as a form of social control, the article investigates a number of cases in which a European patient had been perceived to have transgressed the normat

Effect of gender and school level on disordered eating behaviours and attitudes in Mexican adolescents.

PURPOSE: Cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is the standard of care in non-metastatic muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). There are limited data regarding the alternative choices for cisplatin-ineligible patients. This study has investigated the oncological outcomes of gemcitabine plus cisplatin (Gem/Cis) and gemcitabine plus carboplatin (Gem/Carbo) in this setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred forty consecutive patients with MIBC (cT2-T4a) receiving neoadjuvant Gem/Cis or Gem/Carbo before chemoradiation (CRT) or radical cystectomy (RC) were retrospectively evaluated betw

Association between level of emotional intelligence and severity of anxiety in generalized social phobia.

Generalized social phobia (GSP) is characterized by a marked fear of most social situations. It is associated with an anomalous neural response to emotional stimuli, and individuals with the disorder frequently show interpretation bias in social situations. From this it might be suggested that GSP involves difficulty in accurately perceiving, using, understanding and managing emotions. Here we applied the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) to medication-free GSP (n=28) and no pathology (n=21) individuals. Patients with GSP performed within the normal range on the measure

Patients' priorities for health research: focus group study of patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: The inclusion of consumer preferences in prioritizing research topics is widely advocated, but prioritization is driven largely by professional agendas. METHODS: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were purposively sampled from four kidney dialysis and transplant centres in Australia to participate in nine focus groups (three each for pre-dialysis, dialysis and transplant patients), which were conducted from July 2006 to September 2006. Each involved 6-8 participants. Transcripts were coded and thematically analysed to identify recurrent research topics and the participants

Understanding the association between maltreatment history and adolescent risk behavior by examining popularity motivations and peer group control.

The purpose of the present study was to examine how peer group processes of pressure and control and individual motivations for popularity would add to, and moderate the relationship between, childhood maltreatment and risky behavior in adolescence. A total of 1558 youth (804 girls) from three high schools in Ontario, Canada (M age = 15.02 years, SD = .86) reported on their alcohol use, delinquent behavior, childhood experiences of physical and emotional maltreatment and neglect, peer group processes involving control and individual popularity motivations. Regression analyses showed that, beyo

[Conception and evaluation of a group therapy intervention for patients with chronic pain disorders and applications for early retirement pensions].

OBJECTIVE: Patients with chronic pain disorder are generally thought to be difficult to treat in psychosomatic rehabilitation. On average, their disorders tend to take a more chronic course than those of other patients, and they develop a higher rate of additional socio-medical problems, all of which increase the probability of therapy failure. Most of the time, such failures are attributed solely to the desire for early retirement and disability pensions, that is, a characteristic of the patient. However, a lack of specific therapeutic offers for patients with predominant psycho-social proble

Comparative efficacy of spirituality, cognitive, and emotional support groups for treating eating disorder inpatients.

Spiritual interventions are rarely used in contemporary treatment programs and little empirical evidence is available concerning their effectiveness. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a spiritual group intervention for eating disorder inpatients. We compared the effectiveness of a Spirituality group with Cognitive and Emotional Support groups using a randomized, control group design. Participants were 122 women receiving inpatient eating disorder treatment. Patients in the Spirituality group tended to score significantly lower on psychological disturbance an

Socioemotional understanding and frequent aggression in people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.

Aggression in a proportion of people with intellectual disabilities is often assumed to be due to social-cognitive deficits. We reported on two studies in which we compared the emotion recognition and perspective-taking abilities of 43 frequently aggressive individuals and 46 nonaggressive peers. No difference was found between the groups' ability to label facial affect. The perspective-taking task required participants to distinguish between reactions of angry versus calm characters. Although both groups had similar success with elements of the task, the aggressive group proved better at pred

Epidemiologic risk factors for chronic prostatitis.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome is a multifactorial problem, which affects men of all ages and in all demographics. Recent studies have shown that the prevalence of prostatitis is approximately 2-10% among unselected men in North America, Europe and Asia. This data clearly indicates that chronic prostatitis constitutes an important problem in international health care. Nevertheless, the aetiology and pathogenesis of chronic prostatitis have yet to be clearly delineated, despite the numerous efforts which have been made, with regard to both basic and clinical research. In fact,

Views of breastfeeding difficulties among drop-in-clinic attendees.

Breast-milk is the optimum form of nutrition for the first 6 months of life. However, breastfeeding rates in the UK are low and static compared to other European countries and those in the North-west of England in the UK are even lower. Of the women who initiate breastfeeding, many cease in the first month following the birth for reasons that might be avoided. To try and prevent this, UNICEF Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) 'Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding' state that maternity facilities should foster the development of support groups for breastfeeding women. The aim of the pres

Factors associated with the effects of a structured psychiatric intervention on breast cancer patients.

The authors developed a structured group intervention for Japanese breast cancer patients. This program is a series of five 90-minute sessions including psycho-education, problem-solving, psychological support, relaxation training, and guided imagery. The aim of this study was to investigate discriminating factors between the improving and non-improving group. From November 1996 through November 1998, 110 patients participated in this study. Out of 110 patients, 9 failed to complete the five sessions. Nine did not return the questionnaire 6 months later, due to death of 3 individuals and re-lo
