Anxious, Depressed, and Suicidal: Crisis Narratives in University Student Mental Health and the Need for a Balanced Approach to Student Wellness.

There is growing global awareness of the poor mental health of university students, as well as the need to improve students' access to services and expand the range of available evidence-based interventions. However, a crisis narrative is emerging, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, that runs the risk of positioning all students as potential patients in need of formal psychiatric interventions. Our aim in this commentary is to critically present the evidence that supports increased attention to student mental health, while also raising a concern that the crisis narrative may it

Cognitive profile in adult women with turner syndrome: IQ split and associations with ADHD and ASD.

INTRODUCTION: The behavioural phenotype in Turner syndrome (TS) is associated with an uneven cognitive profile and social and executive difficulties. Still, studies in adult populations of TS are scarce, and the interactions between different behavioural domains are unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the cognitive profile in relation to measures of ADHD and ASD in a Swedish sample of 30 adult women with TS. METHODS: Standardized psychological tests and questionnaires were used for behavioural assessments in a sample of adult women with a diagnosis of TS (n = 30). Both frequentist a

Sexual dimorphism in synaptic inputs to the mouse amygdala and orbital cortex.

The medial amygdala (MeA) is a sexually dimorphic brain region that regulates fear responses, emotional memories, and social behaviors. It is known to be larger and contains more cells in males. The MeA integrates information through input connections from olfactory regions, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, ventral hippocampus, and thalamic and hypothalamic structures. We hypothesize that in addition to the size differences, there are differences in regional connectivity between the sexes. In this study, we utilized G-deleted rabies monosynaptic retrograde tracing to compare amygdala presy

Measuring the Influence of Curricular Content and Personal Stories on Substance Use Stigma.

BACKGROUND: Understanding of the lived experience is an important educational strategy for improving attitudes toward stigmatized patient groups. This study evaluated the influence of a personal story intervention on nursing students' attitudes toward people who use opioids and measured attitudinal change from students' regular mental health and addictions curriculum. METHOD: This study used a single-group longitudinal design. Stigma outcomes were measured using the Opening Minds Provider Attitudes Toward Opioid Use Scale. Mean scores were analyzed for four time periods: control, social conta

Educators as Health and Education Mediators for African Asylum Seekers in Israel.

Israel is not isolated from the global migration process. It is required to provide a medical, educational, and socio-cultural response to the integration of tens of thousands of African asylum seekers. This qualitative-phenomenological study collected data from 15 educators as a primary source and learned about their actions to mediate health and educational issues for African asylum seekers. The findings reveal four categories: (1) a healthy lifestyle; (2) emotional-behavioral; (3) learning disabilities and special needs; (4) diseases, vaccines, and medical treatments. It seems that educator

A Review of Commercial and Non-Commercial Wearables Devices for Monitoring Motor Impairments Caused by Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are among the 10 causes of death worldwide. The effects of NDDs, including irreversible motor impairments, have an impact not only on patients themselves but also on their families and social environments. One strategy to mitigate the pain of NDDs is to early identify and remotely monitor related motor impairments using wearable devices. Technological progress has contributed to reducing the hardware complexity of mobile devices while simultaneously improving their efficiency in terms of data collection and processing and energy consumption. However, perhaps t

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural America.

Despite considerable social scientific attention to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on urbanized areas, very little research has examined its impact on rural populations. Yet rural communities-which make up tens of millions of people from diverse backgrounds in the United States-are among the nation's most vulnerable populations and may be less resilient to the effects of such a large-scale exogenous shock. We address this critical knowledge gap with data from a new survey designed to assess the impacts of the pandemic on health-related and economic dimensions of rural well-being in the N

Overtreating Alzheimer's Disease.

The management of frailty in older persons is not easy, implying interventions beyond the simple prescription of medications. Biological complexity, multimorbidity, polypharmacy, and social issues often hamper the possibility to directly translate the evidence coming from research into clinical practice. Frailty indeed represents the most relevant cause of the “evidence-based medicine issue” influencing clinical decisions in geriatric care. Today, patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are much older and frailer than some decades ago. They also tend to have more drugs prescribed. In parallel,

Understanding the needs of justice-involved adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in an Indigenous community.

Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) experience a range of neurodevelopmental challenges, often compounded by social and environmental adversity. One of the most concerning outcomes that can be associated with FASD is involvement in the justice system, where individuals with FASD are vastly over-represented. Individuals with FASD who are both justice-involved and Indigenous experience added layers of marginalization. In this community-based study, we explored the needs of 16 adults who participated in an FASD-informed restorative justice program in an Indigenous community in

Dictyostelium discoideum as a Model to Assess Genome Stability Through DNA Repair.

Preserving genome integrity through repair of DNA damage is critical for human health and defects in these pathways lead to a variety of pathologies, most notably cancer. The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum is remarkably resistant to DNA damaging agents and genome analysis reveals it contains orthologs of several DNA repair pathway components otherwise limited to vertebrates. These include the Fanconi Anemia DNA inter-strand crosslink and DNA strand break repair pathways. Loss of function of these not only results in malignancy, but also neurodegeneration, immune-deficiencies and congen

Understanding obesity-related behaviors in youth from a systems dynamics perspective: The use of causal loop diagrams.

This paper reports how we applied systems dynamics methods to gain insight into the complexity of obesity-related behaviors in youth, including diet, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep, by integrating a literature review into causal loop diagrams (CLDs). Results showed that the CLDs consisted of multiple subsystems and three types of dynamics appeared, including (1) feedback loops, (2) connections between feedback loops and subsystems, and (3) mechanisms. We observed clear similarities in the dynamics for the four behaviors in that they relate to "traditional" subsystems, such as

How ESKD complicates the management of diabetic foot ulcers: The vital role of the dialysis team in prevention, early detection, and support of multidisciplinary treatment to reduce lower extremity amputations.

Diabetic foot ulcers do not heal as well in ESKD as in the absence of kidney failure, and rates of recurrent foot ulcers, as well as lower extremity amputation, are higher. This review of the literature highlights the vital role of the dialysis team in prevention, early detection, and support of treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Our review has five goals-(a) increase nephrologists' understanding of the high morbidity and mortality associated with chronic foot ulcers and (lower extrimity) LE amputations in ESKD; (b) promote nephrologists' understanding of grading systems for diabetic foot ulce

Pregnancy outcomes, early separation, and psychiatric relapse experienced by South African women with peripartum psychosis: a descriptive exploration.

The peripartum is associated with increased incidence of severe mental illness (SMI), a greater occurrence of psychotic symptoms and psychiatric admissions. This study aimed to describe the psychiatric, medical and psycho-social risk factors affecting South African mothers who experienced peripartum psychosis. Using a prospective, descriptive design, we conducted a detailed interview and supplementary information was collected by review of clinical records. The study examined the accounts of forty mothers who experienced peripartum psychosis between 6 and 18 months postpartum. Descriptive stat

ENIGMA-anxiety working group: Rationale for and organization of large-scale neuroimaging studies of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and disabling but seem particularly tractable to investigation with translational neuroscience methodologies. Neuroimaging has informed our understanding of the neurobiology of anxiety disorders, but research has been limited by small sample sizes and low statistical power, as well as heterogenous imaging methodology. The ENIGMA-Anxiety Working Group has brought together researchers from around the world, in a harmonized and coordinated effort to address these challenges and generate more robust and reproducible findings. This paper elaborates on the conc

Reward.

Neurons throughout frontal cortex show robust responses to rewards, but a challenge is determining the specific function served by these different reward signals. Most neuropsychiatric disorders involve dysfunction of circuits between frontal cortex and subcortical structures, such as the striatum. There are multiple frontostriatal loops, and different neuropsychiatric disorders involve different loops to greater or lesser extents. Understanding the role of reward in each of these different circuits is a necessary step in developing novel treatments for these disorders. This chapter summarizes

Bilingualism for Dementia: Neurological Mechanisms Associated With Functional and Structural Changes in the Brain.

As the number of older adults increases, the prevalence of dementias, such as Alzheimer's dementia (AD), vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementias, also increases. Despite research into pharmacological approaches for treating diverse diseases, there is still no cure. Recently, novel non-pharmacological interventions are attracting attention. Non-pharmacological approaches include cognitive stimulation, alterations in diet, physical activity, and social engagement. Cognitive stimulating activities protect against the negative effects of cognitive decline caused

Swallowing and Voice Outcomes following Treatment of Hypopharyngeal Cancer: The Need for Supervised Rehabilitation.

Advances in and intensification of treatment in hypopharyngeal cancer have led to an increase in organ preservation and in overall survival. Treatment intensification comes at the cost of more pronounced acute and long-term side effects causing functional impairments in voice and swallowing. Swallowing and voice problems have a significant impact on communication, eating and nutrition, social well-being and quality of life. Swallowing problems may be so severe that patients suffer profuse aspiration or are left gastrostomy-tube dependent. Pre-treatment evaluation of swallowing and voice as wel

A missense variant in PER2 is associated with delayed sleep-wake phase disorder in a Japanese population.

Delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSWPD) is a subtype of circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, and is characterized by an inability to fall asleep until late at night and wake up at a socially acceptable time in the morning. The study aim was to identify low-frequency nonsense and missense variants that are associated with DSWPD. Candidate variants in circadian rhythm-related genes were extracted by integration of genetic variation databases and in silico assessment. We narrowed down the candidates to six variants. To examine whether the six variants are associated with DSWPD, we performed a
