Social class and parenting children with mild and moderate mental retardation.

Based on Kohn's (1977) and Gecas' (1979) theories of social class and parenting values, the role of socioeconomic status (SES) as a determinant of parenting attitudes and behaviors and as a moderator of problems associated with raising children with handicaps was evaluated among 171 families raising a child with mild or moderate mental retardation. Self-report measures assessed mothers' and fathers' attitudes regarding control, independence, and closeness within the family, and parental and family problems. Supportive, aversive, and controlling parent-child interactions were observed in the ho

Evaluation of seroepidemiological associations between HIV-infection, hepatitis B and other sexually transmitted diseases in African patients.

To assess the possible role of sexually transmitted diseases as cofactors for the spread of AIDS, 248 adult patients were tested for the presence of antibodies against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and syphilis. The survey was conducted in a hospital at Kagondo, Kagera Region, Northwest Tanzania, Africa. Subjects were randomly chosen from the outpatient clinic to include those with and without sexually transmitted diseases, as well as AIDS/pre-AIDS patients. The data were univariately and multivariately analysed by linear logit models, including interactions of de

Nutritional issues in perinatal alcohol exposure.

Animal models are important in perinatal alcohol research because they provide an opportunity to study the effects of alcohol while controlling for biological, social and environmental factors which are difficult to control in human studies. One of the variables which has often been overlooked in animal studies, however, is nutrition. Even when there has been an awareness of the need for nutritional controls, such controls have been particularly difficult to implement because alcohol and nutrition interact at so many levels. In this review the interactions of alcohol and nutrition are discusse

Effectiveness of interventions for improving social inclusion outcomes for people with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities-more than a billion people worldwide-are frequently excluded from social and political life, and often experience stigmatising attitudes and behaviours from people without disabilities. This stigma, coupled with inaccessible environments and systems and institutional barriers (e.g., lack of inclusive legislation), may result in discrimination against people with disabilities (and their families) to the degree that they are not able to enjoy their rights on an equal basis with others. OBJECTIVES: This review examines the effectiveness of interventions for i

Sub-Additive Effects of Autism-ADHD Comorbidity on Resting-State Pupillary and Oculomotor Phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) share substantial clinical and physiological overlap. While naturalistic and sensory-driven paradigms increasingly capture evoked neurophysiological responses, the intrinsic baseline physiology of these conditions remains poorly defined. We characterized resting-state pupillary volatility and oculomotor stability across the ASD-ADHD spectrum using dimensional and categorical (DSM-5) frameworks. METHODS: We analyzed resting-state eye-tracking data from a large pediatric cohort (N = 2,315) from the He

Neighborhood Disadvantage and Dementia Risk Among Older Patients With Kidney Failure: Differences by Race/Ethnicity and Urbanicity.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Among older patients with kidney failure, those who are minoritized or residing in rural areas experience a disproportionate burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Neighborhood disadvantage drives health disparities, but few studies have directly examined its association with ADRD and whether this association varies by race/ethnicity and by urbanicity. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: United States Renal Data System data; older patients (age ≥ 55 years) initiating dialysis in 2003-2021. EXPOSURES: Residential neighborhood disadv

Validation of novel naturalistic limb movement stimuli for studying biological motion perception in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how we perceive and interpret the movements of other living beings is fundamental to social interaction, survival, and navigating our dynamic environment. Traditional studies of biological motion perception have predominantly employed simplified stimuli, such as point-light displays, which sacrifice ecological validity for experimental control. METHODS: To overcome this limitation, we created a novel stimulus set featuring naturalistic videos of isolated hand and leg movements. These stimuli incorporated variations in viewing perspective (first-person vs. third-per

Effect modification and interaction between ethnicity and socioeconomic factors in severe COVID-19: analyses of linked national data for Scotland.

OBJECTIVE: Minority ethnic groups disproportionately experienced adverse COVID-19 outcomes, partly a consequence of disproportionate exposure to socioeconomic disadvantage and high-risk occupations. We examined whether minority ethnic groups were also disproportionately vulnerable to the consequences of socioeconomic disadvantage and high-risk occupations in Scotland. DESIGN: We investigated effect modification and interaction between area deprivation, education and occupational risk and ethnicity (assessed as both a binary white vs non-white variable and a multi-category variable) in relatio

From victims to aggressors: the link between childhood family abuse and adolescent peer bullying.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent bullying and childhood family abuse are widespread social issues with lasting negative effects on victims' psychological health and behavior. Research suggests that childhood family abuse increases the likelihood of adolescents engaging in bullying. However, the dynamic relationship between these two phenomena, particularly the mechanisms involved, has been understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how childhood family abuse leads to adolescent bullying behavior through the mediating roles of loneliness and delinquent peer affiliation, offering a theoretical b

Impact of early, longitudinal community-based education on medical student self-efficacy: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The critical transition from preclinical theory to clinical practice in medical education is often hampered by a crisis of student confidence. Self-efficacy - belief in one's capabilities - is paramount for effective patient interaction, yet how longitudinal, early community-based experiences during the preclinical phase foster this self-efficacy remains underexplored. This study investigated the impact of an early, longitudinal community-based education program, CFHC, which provides patient interaction from the first to seventh semester, on medical students' self-efficacy for clin

Intergenerational support and depressive symptoms among older adults in rural China: the moderating roles of age, living alone, and chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: While depressive symptoms are recognized as major mental health problems in later life, there is a lack of study in examining potential moderators in the association between intergenerational support and depressive symptoms, especially in social contexts with low socioeconomic status and inadequate formal public support. This study set out to examine the association between intergenerational support and depressive symptoms among older adults in rural Northeast China, and the potential moderating roles of age, living alone, and number of chronic diseases on this link. Reduction of appearance artifacts in wearable on-skin electronics.

Facial electrophysiological signals are crucial to human-machine interfaces and health care monitoring. Soft and skin-conformable electrodes enabled long-term and comfortable signal monitoring. However, the appearance of the electrodes affects the wearer's social interactions and self-identity, making daily usage difficult and leaving appearance artifacts. Here, we developed fully invisible and unperceivable on-skin electrodes free from appearance artifacts. Neither the wearer nor observers can detect the visual and tactile presence of the electrodes on the skin. The unperceivable property was

Sex Allocation in Nonstandard Haplodiploids.

AbstractThe value that a mother places on the production of a son or daughter depends critically on how genes are transmitted between parents and offspring. The inheritance system shapes both the reproductive value of males and females and the relatedness between parents, offspring, and other interacting individuals. Recently, a new form of haplodiploidy was discovered in Varroa mites, where although sons are produced asexually, they are diploid rather than haploid. A similar system, albeit with a different mechanism of diploid male production, is also known in Lecanoid scales. This diploid ar

The mouse gut microbiota responds to predator odor and predicts host behavior.

Chronic stressors can alter the mammalian gut microbiota in ways that mediate host stress responses, but the impacts of acute stressors on these interactions are less well understood. Here, we show that brief exposure of wild-derived mice to predator odor altered gut-microbiota composition, which in turn predicted host behavior. We investigated the individual and combined effects of 15-minute exposures to synthetic fox fecal odor and 30 days of chronic social isolation, an established chronic stressor. Using ethological assays, visceral adipose tissue transcriptomics, and genome-resolved metag

A wireless modular platform for neuro-behavioral recording and closed-loop manipulation in small animals.

Investigating the neural mechanisms of social group interactions and other naturalistic behaviors in small animals remains limited by current technology. Tethered neural recording systems are incompatible with many of these behaviors, while existing wireless devices for small animals are constrained by weight, bandwidth, recording duration and the lack of closed-loop modulation capabilities. Here we overcome these limitations by developing a Wireless, Interactive, Lightweight Datalogger (WILD) with integrated flexible neural probes, optogenetics, an inertial measurement unit, an ultrasonic mic

Relationship between household attributes and contact patterns in urban and rural South Africa.

Households play a crucial role in the propagation of infectious diseases due to the frequent and prolonged interactions that typically occur between their members. Recent studies have emphasized the need to include socioeconomic variables in epidemic models to account for the heterogeneity induced by human behavior. While sub-Saharan Africa suffers the highest burden of infectious disease diffusion, few studies have investigated the mixing patterns in the countries and their relation with social indicators. This work analyzes household contact matrices measured with wearable proximity sensors

"It was unusual but amazing": demand creation for PrEP among adolescents' men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in Brazil.

This study aimed to analyze the challenges in demand creation for participation in an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) project in two Brazilian capitals. This qualitative study was conducted with men who have sex with men and transgender women aged 15 to 19 years who lived in two Brazilian state capitals. For this analysis, 27 semi-structured interviews carried out from 2019 to 2020 were evaluated by reflexive thematic content analysis. For participants, PrEP demand creation was essential for their interaction, mediation, bonding, and attachment and proved effective for PrEP acceptability a

The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma, Pathological Dissociation, and Behavioral Addictions in Young Adults: Findings from a Cross-Sectional Study.

Interactions between childhood trauma (CT) and dissociation can contribute to psychiatric disturbances. We explored this phenomenon in relation to behavioral addictions (BAs) in a sample (n = 633) of young adults (age: 18-34 years). Self-report measures investigating CT, dissociation, and symptoms related to gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder, problematic social media use, exercise dependence and compulsive buying were used. Scales related to BAs were summarized into a single measure ("Total Behavioral Addiction Index" - TBAI) for inferential analyses. A model analyzing the direct and

Using ncRNAs as Tools in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment-The Way towards Personalized Medicine to Improve Patients' Health.

Although the first discovery of a non-coding RNA (ncRNA) dates back to 1958, only in recent years has the complexity of the transcriptome started to be elucidated. However, its components are still under investigation and their identification is one of the challenges that scientists are presently facing. In addition, their function is still far from being fully understood. The non-coding portion of the genome is indeed the largest, both quantitatively and qualitatively. A large fraction of these ncRNAs have a regulatory role either in coding mRNAs or in other ncRNAs, creating an intracellular

The COVID-19 pandemic: The evaluation of the emergency remote parent training program based on at-home support for children with down syndrome.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of emergency remote training programs for young children with Down syndrome, learning difficulties, and severe health problems and their parents became a requirement. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of the "applied emergency remote training program", prepared to address the needs of parents with children with Down syndrome and to offer them at-home support. It is an evaluative case study conducted with 11 parents of 11-35 months old children with Down syndrome. The findings demonstrated that the program could be conducted in a home e
