Health care needs of homeless and runaway youths. Council on Scientific Affairs.

Large numbers of homeless adolescents can be found in this country, with estimates of their numbers ranging from 500,000 to more than 2 million. Some are runaways while others are involuntarily without shelter, often having been forced out of their homes. Most receive no help from social service agencies and their lack of skills forces them into a marginal existence, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and victimization. Health problems are numerous and health care is generally inadequate for several reasons, including a lack of treatment facilities, the behavior of the adolescents themselves, th

Sensitisation by mycobacteria and the effects of BCG on children attending schools in the slums of Bombay.

Quadruple skin testing with new tuberculins was used to evaluate the effects of previously administered BCG Madras in children attending schools in the slums, or living in Kopri Leprosy Colony in Bombay. There were differences between schools both in the level of sensitisation of children without BCG scars and in the effects of BCG vaccination. Results obtained at one school resembled those obtained in a previous study in Agra, where BCG was thought to be ineffective. Results from the other schools and Kopri were more like those previously reported from Ahmednagar, where BCG was considered to

Neonatal circumcision and penile problems: an 8-year longitudinal study.

The prevalence of penile problems was examined in a birth cohort of more than 500 New Zealand children studied from birth to 8 years of age. By 8 years, circumcised children had a rate of 11.1 problems per 100 children, and uncircumcised children had a rate of 18.8 per 100. The majority of these problems were for penile inflammation including balanitis, meatitis, and inflammation of the prepuce. However, the relationship between risks of penile problems and circumcision status varied with the child's age. During infancy, circumcised children had a significantly higher risk of problems than unc

Clinical epidemiology of symptomatic primary herpetic infection in children. A study of 50 cases.

We have studied a series of 50 children with clinical primary herpetic infection during 1975-1985. Our data confirm: absence of sex differences and seasonal variations, a peak age of incidence between 6 and 24 months, a prevalence of patients of lower social status, evidence of recurrent herpes labialis as the most frequent source of infection, and frequency of herpes simplex virus 1 gingivostomatitis. The relevant findings of this study were as follows: herpes simplex virus 2 was isolated in 10% of the patients, 6% of cases occurred in the first six months of life, infection was multifocal in

Oral health related quality of life in head and neck cancer survivors within the first year following treatment: a cross-sectional study in Karachi, Pakistan.

After completing treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC), patients often face oral complications like oral pain, limited mouth opening and dry mouth which significantly reduce their oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). These issues impact their overall well-being, social activities and long-term survival. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate OHRQoL and its association with sociodemographic characteristics, oral hygiene practices and oral clinical parameters such as oral hygiene status and oral mucositis grade in patients who have completed treatment for head and neck c

Palliative care, homelessness, and restricted or uncertain immigration status.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness have limited access to palliative care support despite high levels of ill health and premature mortality. Most research exploring these challenges in the United Kingdom has focused on people living in hostels or temporary accommodation. People with uncertain or restricted immigration status are often unable to access this accommodation due to lack of entitlement to benefits. There is little research about the experiences of those in the United Kingdom who cannot access hostels or temporary accommodation due to restricted or uncertain immigration sta

Online education and its relation to hearing status among higher-secondary students in Bangladesh: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Online education gained its popularity in the education system during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The online platform, including social media, was institutionalized globally for the purpose of tutoring to keep the education process ongoing under feasible circumstances. However, the post-pandemic continuation of online education and prolonged usage of electronic devices imposed a greater risk of health issues related to sensory impairment. Our study aimed to determine the impact of online education on students' hearing status and its associated factors. METHODS: A cross-section

The silence of opioids-dependent chronic pain patients: A text mining analysis from sex and gender perspective.

Existing evidence indicates sex-related differences in Prescription Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in Chronic Non-Cancer Pain (CNCP). However to date, there is scant evidence for other socioeconomic factors in these differences. Our aim was to enquire about the influence of gender and drug copayment of OUD narratives by the text mining analysis. A prospective mixed-methods study was designed and performed at Pain Unit (PU) including 238 real world patients with CNCP divided in controls (n = 206) and OUD cases (n = 32) due to DSM-5 diagnosis Variables related to pain, sleep, mental and health status

Impact of caring for patients with polyhandicap on institutional health care workers' quality of life: a cross-sectional and longitudinal evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Profound intellectual multiple disabilities or polyhandicap (PLH) is defined as a combination of profound mental retardation and serious motor deficits resulting in extreme dependence. Support for these patients is multidisciplinary, complex, and time-consuming. Thus, institutional health care workers (HCWs) face specific working conditions: frequent physical tasks, distressed families, and restricted feedback. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify determinants of quality of life (QoL) of HCWs and to study longitudinal evolution. METHODS: The study used data from the French cohort EVA
