Destruction of Chitosan and Its Complexes with Cobalt(II) and Copper(II) Tetrasulphophthalocyanines.

Chitosan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from chitin with a wide range of uses. Phthalocyanines are macroheterocyclic compounds that have a number of useful properties such as coloring and catalytic and antioxidant activity. Phthalocyanines are able to immobilize on chitosan, forming complexes with new useful properties. In this work, we evaluated the ability of phthalocyanines to increase the thermal stability of chitosan. Chitosan (CS) forms complexes with copper(II)-(CuPc) and cobalt(II)-(CoPc) tetrasulphophthalocyanines. The processes of destruction of chitosan (CS) and its

The influence of biophysical parameters in a biomechanical model of cortical folding patterns.

Abnormal cortical folding patterns, such as lissencephaly, pachygyria and polymicrogyria malformations, may be related to neurodevelopmental disorders. In this context, computational modeling is a powerful tool to provide a better understanding of the early brain folding process. Recent studies based on biomechanical modeling have shown that mechanical forces play a crucial role in the formation of cortical convolutions. However, the effect of biophysical parameters in these models remain unclear. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the cortical growth, the initial geometry and the ini

Automatic Lung Segmentation on Chest X-rays Using Self-Attention Deep Neural Network.

Accurate identification of the boundaries of organs or abnormal objects (e.g., tumors) in medical images is important in surgical planning and in the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. In this study, we propose a deep learning-based method to segment lung areas in chest X-rays. The novel aspect of the proposed method is the self-attention module, where the outputs of the channel and spatial attention modules are combined to generate attention maps, with each highlighting those regions of feature maps that correspond to "what" and "where" to attend in the learning process, respectively. There

Three-dimensional printing in adult cardiovascular medicine for surgical and transcatheter procedural planning, teaching and technological innovation.

Three-dimensional (3D)-printing technologies in cardiovascular surgery have provided a new way to tailor surgical and percutaneous treatments. Digital information from standard cardiac imaging is integrated into physical 3D models for an accurate spatial visualization of anatomical details. We reviewed the available literature and analysed the different printing technologies, the required procedural steps for 3D prototyping, the used cardiac imaging, the available materials and the clinical implications. We have highlighted different materials used to replicate aortic and mitral valves, vessel

Representational gravity: Empirical findings and theoretical implications.

Judgment of the location of a previously viewed moving or stationary target is often displaced in the direction of implied gravitational attraction, and this has been referred to as representational gravity. Variables that have been investigated for a possible influence on representational gravity include characteristics of the target (size/mass, velocity, distance traveled, orientation, modality), display (retention interval, response measure, height in the picture plane), context (nontarget intramodal stimuli, cross-modal components of a single stimulus), and observer (oculomotor behavior, b

The zoonotic pathogen Leptospira interrogans mitigates environmental stress through cyclic-di-GMP-controlled biofilm production.

The zoonotic bacterium Leptospira interrogans is the aetiological agent of leptospirosis, a re-emerging infectious disease that is a growing public health concern. Most human cases of leptospirosis result from environmental infection. Biofilm formation and its contribution to the persistence of virulent leptospires in the environment or in the host have scarcely been addressed. Here, we examined spatial and time-domain changes in biofilm production by L. interrogans. Our observations showed that biofilm formation in L. interrogans is a highly dynamic process and leads to a polarized architectu

Trematode Parasite Infection Affects Temperature Selection in Aquatic Host Snails.

Animals infected by parasites or pathogens can exhibit altered behaviors that may reduce the costs of infection to the host or represent manipulations that benefit the parasite. Given that temperature affects many critical physiological processes, changes in thermoregulatory behaviors are an important consideration for infected hosts, especially ectotherms. Here we examined the temperature choices of freshwater snails (Helisoma trivolvis) that were or were not infected by a trematode (flatworm) parasite (Echinostoma trivolvis). Active snails that explored the experimental temperature gradient

The review of differential equation models of HBV infection dynamics.

Understanding the infection and pathogenesis mechanism of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is very important for the prevention and treatment of hepatitis B. Mathematical models contribute to illuminate the dynamic process of HBV replication in vivo. Therefore, in this paper we review the viral dynamics in HBV infection, which may help us further understand the dynamic mechanism of HBV infection and efficacy of antiviral treatment. Firstly, we introduce a family of deterministic models by considering different biological mechanisms, such as, antiviral therapy, CTL immune response, multi-types of infect

Full-field displacement measurement of corneoscleral shells by combining multi-camera speckle interferometry with 3D shape reconstruction.

Changes in the biomechanical properties of the connective tissue of the eye occur with age and underlie the development of several ocular diseases, such as glaucoma, myopia, and keratoconus. The biomechanical dynamics of ocular connective tissue are measured by ex vivo inflation testing, in which intraocular pressure (IOP) is varied and optical methods are used to produce maps of corneal and scleral displacement. Current optical methods are limited by acquisition rate, occlusions, poor spatial resolution, and insufficient 3D mapping. We developed an interferometric optical method integrates fo

Effect of tissue permeability and drug diffusion anisotropy on convection-enhanced delivery.

Although convection-enhanced delivery (CED) can successfully facilitate a bypass of the blood brain barrier, its treatment efficacy remains highly limited in clinic. This can be partially attributed to the brain anisotropic characteristics that lead to the difficulties in controlling the drug spatial distribution. Here, the responses of six different drugs to the tissue anisotropy are examined through a parametric study performed using a multiphysics model, which considers interstitial fluid flow, tissue deformation and interlinked drug transport processes in CED. The delivery outcomes are eva

Revealing biomedically relevant cell and lectin type-dependent structure-activity profiles for glycoclusters by using tissue sections as an assay platform.

The increasing realization of the involvement of lectin-glycan recognition in (patho)physiological processes inspires envisioning therapeutic intervention by high-avidity/specificity blocking reagents. Synthetic glycoclusters are proving to have potential for becoming such inhibitors but the commonly used assays have their drawbacks to predict in vivo efficacy. They do not represent the natural complexity of (i) cell types and (ii) spatial and structural complexity of glycoconjugate representation. Moreover, testing lectins in mixtures, as present in situ, remains a major challenge, giving dir

The role of Wnt signaling in the healing myocardium: a focus on cell specificity.

Various cell types are involved in the healing process after myocardial infarction (MI). Besides cardiac resident cells (such as cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts and endothelial cells) already present at the lesion site, a massive influx of leukocytes (mainly monocytes and neutrophils) is observed within hours after the ischemic event. So far, little is known about modes of interaction of these cells. Wnt signaling is an evolutionary conserved signaling cassette known to play an important role in cell-cell communication. While the overall reactivation of Wnt signaling upon ischemic injury is well d

Astrocytes decrease adult neurogenesis during virus-induced memory dysfunction via IL-1.

Memory impairment following West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease (WNND) is associated with loss of hippocampal synapses with lack of recovery. Adult neurogenesis and synaptogenesis are fundamental features of hippocampal repair, which suggests that viruses affect these processes. Here, in an established model of WNND-induced cognitive dysfunction, transcriptional profiling revealed alterations in the expression of genes encoding molecules that limit adult neurogenesis, including interleukin 1 (IL-1). Mice that had recovered from WNND exhibited fewer neuroblasts and increased astrogenesis with

Mitochondrial genotyping of Fascioloides magna from Bavaria, Germany.

In last few years, a great effort has been made to understand genetic interrelationships of European and North American populations of giant liver fluke Fascioloides magna (Trematoda, Fasciolidae). In Europe, spatial distribution of this parasite is evidently dynamic and ongoing process since new F. magna populations have constantly been emerging. Most recently, occurrence of F. magna in red deer (Cervus elaphus), sika deer (Cervus nippon), fallow deer (Dama dama), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and wild boar (Sus scrofa) was reported from north-eastern Bavaria in Germany. Fascioloides magna

Stem Cell-Based Therapies for Ischemic Stroke: Preclinical Results and the Potential of Imaging-Assisted Evaluation of Donor Cell Fate and Mechanisms of Brain Regeneration.

Stroke is the second most common cause of death and is a major cause of permanent disability. Given the current demographic trend of an ageing population and associated increased risk, the prevalence of and socioeconomic burden caused by stroke will continue to rise. Current therapies are unable to sufficiently ameliorate the disease outcome and are not applicable to all patients. Therefore, strategies such as cell-based therapies with mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) or induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) pave the way for new treatment options for stroke. These cells showed great preclinical prom

Design and synthesis of a novel class of carbonic anhydrase-IX inhibitor 1-(3-(phenyl/4-fluorophenyl)-7-imino-3H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5d]pyrimidin 6(7H)yl)urea.

Carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) is a promising target in cancer therapy especially in the case of hypoxia-induced tumors. The selective inhibition of CA isozymes is a challenging task in drug design and discovery process. Here, we performed fluorescence-binding studies and inhibition assay combined with molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation analyses to determine the binding affinity of two synthesized triazolo-pyrimidine urea derived (TPUI and TPUII) compounds with CAIX and CAII. Fluorescence binding results are showing that molecule TPUI has an excellent binding-affinity for C

Three-Dimensional Structure of a Simple Liquid at a Face-Centered-Cubic (001) Solid Surface Interface.

A liquid in the vicinity of a solid-liquid interface (SLI) may exhibit complex structures. In this study, we used molecular dynamics simulations demonstrating for the first time that the liquid adjacent to the SLI can have a two-level structure in some cases: a major structure and a minor structure. Through a time-averaging process of molecular motions, we identified the type of the liquid structure by calculating positions of the maximum liquid density in three spatial dimensions, and these positions were found to distribute in many dispersed zones (called high-density zones (HDZs)). The majo

[The molecular mechanisms contributing to the pathophysiology of systemic inflammatory response after acute aortic dissection].

Type B acute aortic dissection (AAD) spares the ascending aorta and is optimally managed by medical therapy in the absence of complications. However, patients with enhanced inflammation sometimes present with aortic enlargement, thereby facing undesirable outcomes. Thus, a better understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in AAD-associated inflammatory processes and the requirement for a novel therapeutic approach for patients with type B AAD are unmet clinical needs. This study showed that dissection per se induced neutrophil-chemoattractant chemokine expression in the ao

[New Diagnostic Imaging Technique - Shear Wave Elastography].

Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a new non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique, that maps the elastic properties of tissues. Nowadays this modality develops increasingly in medicine across its disciplines and opens a new era of high-quality ultrasound examination because it increases the specificity and thus improves diagnostic assurance. This method is similar to manual palpation, shows elastic properties of biological tissues and provides a kind of reconstruction of the internal structure of soft tissues based on measurement of the response of tissue compression. Various biological tissues
