The importance of analyzing the serum C3-epimer level for evaluating vitamin D storage in some special populations.

OBJECTIVE: The serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is recommended by various management agencies for evaluating the nutritional status of vitamin D (VitD). However, 25(OH)D cannot reflect the actual composition and activity of VitD in vivo. This study used UPLC-MS/MS to detect the levels of serum VitD metabolites in some special populations, so as to clarify its importance in accurately evaluating VitD storage in vivo. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 2029 subjects were enrolled, including 1204 cases in minor health (MH), 467 in the minor disease (MD), 119 in the adult health (AH) and 239 in

A Multicenter Retrospective Evaluation of Specialized Laboratory Investigations in the Workup of Pediatric Patients With New-Onset Supraventricular Tachycardia.

INTRODUCTION: Specialized laboratory evaluation of supraventricular tachycardia in children may occur, but the utility is unknown. The study objectives are to assess the type, frequency, and results of specialized laboratory testing performed in pediatric patients presenting with new-onset supraventricular tachycardia. We hypothesized that when specialized laboratory testing occurs (particularly for cardiac failure, toxicologic, inflammatory, and thyroid diseases), the results are generally within normal limits. METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study using an electronic health rec

[Management of refractory septic shock with blood purification therapy using a special filter. Report of one case].

Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in critically ill patients with COVID-19 and blood purification therapies have a role to immunomodulate the excessive inflammatory response and improve clinical results. One of the devices designed for these therapies is the oXiris® filter, allowing to perform renal replacement therapy combined with selective adsorption of endotoxins and cytokines. We report a 55-year-old male with COVID who developed a septic shock secondary to a sepsis caused by Pseudomona aeruginosa, refractory to the usual management. A veno-venous continuous hemofiltration was

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Special Statement: Quality metrics for optimal timing of antenatal corticosteroid administration.

Preterm birth is a leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Antenatal corticosteroid administration before preterm birth reduces the risks of perinatal death, respiratory morbidity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and intraventricular hemorrhage and reduces the costs of perinatal care. Antenatal corticosteroids are optimally effective when administered within 7 days before preterm birth. However, only 20% to 40% of early preterm infants receive antenatal corticosteroids within 7 days before birth, in part because it is difficult to predict the precise timing of preterm birth. Until 2020,

Effects of plication procedures in special cases of Peyronie's disease: a single-center retrospective study of 72 patients.

General recommendations regarding surgical techniques are not always appropriate for all Peyronie's disease (PD) patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of plication procedures in PD patients with severe penile curvature and the effects of early surgical correction in patients who no longer have progressive deformities. The clinical data from 72 patients who underwent plication procedures were analyzed in this study. Patients were divided into Groups A and B according to the curvature severity (≤60° or >60°) and Groups 1 and 2 according to the duration of

A Review of the Role of Imaging Modalities in the Evaluation of Viral Myocarditis with a Special Focus on COVID-19-Related Myocarditis.

Viral myocarditis is inflammation of the myocardium secondary to viral infection. The clinical presentation of viral myocarditis is very heterogeneous and can range from nonspecific symptoms of malaise and fatigue in subclinical disease to a more florid presentation, such as acute cardiogenic shock and sudden cardiac death in severe cases. The accurate and prompt diagnosis of viral myocarditis is very challenging. Endomyocardial biopsy is considered to be the gold standard test to confirm viral myocarditis; however, it is an invasive procedure, and the sensitivity is low when myocardial involv

Special Education Teachers' Use of Technologies During the COVID-19 Era (Spring 2020-Fall 2021).

UNLABELLED: Neoantigen (NeoAg)-based vaccines have emerged as promising immunotherapeutic approaches for lung cancer (LC) treatment. However, the high mutational variability of p53 protein poses challenges for durable vaccine design. In this study, we implemented a coevolution-guided immunoinformatics approach to design an epitope-based multi-epitope peptide vaccine targeting p53. We analyzed 224 homologous p53 sequences to identify coevolving amino acids using compensation and correlation methodologies. Compensation analysis identified 12 coevolving groups comprising 26 residues (6.6%), where
