Neurological deficit and alterations in the hippocampus still frequently occur following bacterial meningitis in children, despite the antibiotic treatment. We investigated the long-term outcomes using early versus late antibiotic therapy in experimental pneumococcal meningitis. To this aim, male Wistar rats underwent a basilar cistern tap receiving either sterile saline as a placebo or an equivalent volume of a Streptococcus pneumoniae suspension. Antibiotics were started 8 or 16 h after infection and the animals were followed for 10 days to the determination of long-term cognitive outcomes.

A combined meeting of the American Society of Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America was held recently in Washington, DC, USA, which gathered worldwide experts in the fields of infectious diseases, microbiology and the pharmaceutical industry, among others. Owing to its huge attendance and being among the largest conferences in the world during the year for infectious disease specialists, we focus only in the most relevant issues related to pediatric vaccines. Among others, we mention dengue, rotavirus, HIV, influenza virus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis

The restoration of hearing to persons with severely or profoundly impaired hearing by means of a cochlear implant is one of the great achievements of bionics applied to medicine. However, pneumococcal meningitis in implant recipients has received high profile public attention as a result of the US Food and Drug Administration's public health notification and recent media attention. Worldwide, 118 of the 60,000 people who received cochlear implants over the past 20 years have acquired meningitis, causing deep concern in the international medical community. This review provides answers to pediat

Septic arthritis induced by Streptococcus pneumoniae is an uncommon manifestation of pneumococcal infection. Pneumococcus has been identified as the inciting pathogen in only 6% of cases of septic arthritis in recent retrospective studies (Ross et al., 2003). Approximately 50% of patients with pneumococcal septic arthritis have a preceding or concurrent extra-articular focus of infection. The septic joint evolves from hematogenous seeding of the highly vascular synovial membrane by bacteria. Polyarticular disease occurs in only approximately 36% of patients. Most pneumococcal septic arthritis

In Poland, 3 693 cases of neuroinfections were reported in 2006, of which 989 had bacterial aetiology, 1 874--viral aetiology, and 512--other or unknown origin. The etiological agent was determined in 455 (46%) cases of bacterial neuroinfections. Among them Neisseria meningitidis was found in 148 cases, Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) in 39 cases and Streptococcus pneumoniae in 119 cases. An increasing trend in meningococcal infections incidence has been observed in 2006, and a substantial decrease of Hib incidence, related to increasing vaccination coverage. Viral neuroinfections incidenc

Bacterial meningitis is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, despite advances in antibiotic therapy. Meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae is associated with a particularly high incidence of neurological sequelae including deficits resulting from damage to the hippocampus. Previous studies have documented that in neonatal rats with experimental pneumococcal meningitis, cells in the subgranular layer of the dentate gyrus undergo apoptosis. The aim of the present study was to define in more detail the nature of the dying cells in the dentate gyrus. Using bromodeoxyuridi

PURPOSE: To report clinical manifestations and the bacteriologic profiles of three patients with bilateral bacterial keratitis following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
METHODS: Photorefractive keratectomy was performed for mild to moderate myopia or compound myopic astigmatism. Bandage contact lenses were fitted at the conclusion of each surgery. Bilateral infectious keratitis was diagnosed within 3 days after surgery. Smear and culture were obtained in all three cases. Patients were treated with topical fortified antibiotics (cefazolin and gentamicin).
RESULTS: All patients presented wi

Hearing loss is one of the most common sequelae in survivors of pneumococcal meningitis, affecting up to 26% of them. Here, we established the first mouse model of meningitis-associated hearing loss and investigated the role played by the Toll-like receptor-associated adapter molecule MyD88. C57BL/6 mice were infected intracisternally by Streptococcus pneumoniae. By use of audiometry and histological analysis, cochleae were assessed in uninfected control mice during the acute stage and after recovery. MyD88-deficient mice were analyzed 24 h after infection. Wild-type mice lost hearing capacity

Fever and a petechial rash are strongly associated with meningococcal disease in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Early antibiotic therapy is indicated and, consequently, a reduction of confirmed cases by culture, Gram stain, and latex agglutination test is expected. We evaluated a multiplex PCR assay to identify Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae in biological samples from cases of non-culture proven meningitis with a petechial rash at presentation. To detect DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (n = 71) or blood (n = 5), a PCR screen was performed, based on the crgA

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori has now been widely recognized as a causative agent of gastroduodenal diseases. The development of safer anti- H. pylori compounds is desirable due to the antibiotic-resistant strains emerged to date.
METHODS: We successfully developed the compounds of Rice-fluid derived from unpolished, polished, and usually cooked Japanese rice, and investigated their in vitro antibacterial activities by means of the Time-Kill-Curve methods against various species of bacteria including H. pylori strains.
RESULTS: All of the compounds revealed keen bactericidal activities aga

Published data on antimicrobial resistance are lacking for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Knowledge of local patterns of resistance is essential to optimize guidelines for empirical antimicrobial treatment. Awareness of susceptibility patterns in other parts of the world may be important for determining empirical antimicrobial therapy for travelers or patients transferred from abroad. Antibiograms from unique isolates of common hospital and community bacteria are described in a tertiary referral hospital in the UAE, which had no antimicrobial restrictions and limited resources. Prulifloxacin, the prodrug of ulifloxacin, is a broad-spectrum oral fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. After absorption, prulifloxacin is metabolized by esterases to ulifloxacin. The drug has a long elimination half-life, allowing once-daily administration. In vitro, ulifloxacin is generally more active than other fluoroquinolones against a variety of clinical isolates of Gram-negative bacteria, including community and nosocomial isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus, Providencia and Morganella spp., Moraxella catarrhalis, Haemophilus spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing public health concern, all the more as it is concurrently accompanied by limited antimicrobial drugs development, especially broad-spectrum antibiotics. Tigecycline, the first in the novel glycylcycline class to undergo clinical development, showed extensive in vitro activity against a broad range of Gram positive aerobes, among which Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Gram negative pathogens, such as Haemophilus influenzae and enterobacteriae, despite these germs resistance to beta-lactams, vancomycin, and a number of other common an

Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality among paediatric infectious diseases. The aim of this study is to analyse specific data on Sp meningitis out of the Bacterial Meningitis (BM) French Surveillance Network about mean age of BM cases and clinical features. Overall 367 Sp BM were reported between January 2001 to January 2004 (sex ratio M/F: 1.3), 69.7% were < 2 years old, median age 0.8 year (minmax 0-16.8 years). Before two years old children, 94.1% had no medical risk factor and no underlying conditions: on the other hand, after two years old, these f

New antimicrobial agents are urgently needed for clinical use due to the increasing prevalence and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria that are commonly responsible for serious and life-threatening diseases. The need to develop new agents that effectively overcome existing mechanisms of resistance displayed by bacteria resistant to currently available drugs has become paramount. Tigecycline, the first in a new class of antimicrobials, the glycylcyclines, is an analogue of minocycline with additional properties that negate most mechanisms mediating resistance to the tetracyclines. In vitro t

The aim of the present study was to review our recent experience in the diagnosis and treatment of acute mastoiditis and its complications in a single tertiary-care, university-affiliated pediatric center. Ninety-eight children with 101 episodes of acute mastoiditis were included in the study. The mean interval from onset of illness to mastoiditis was 4.5 days. Ear cultures most often grew Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (23.7% each). Complications occurred in 15.8% of episodes. The only factor differentiating children with and without complications was white blood cell cou

Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are mostly caused by viruses. Antibiotic misuse for viral URTIs in children is a serious problem that not only results in selection of resistant strains of bacteria but also wastes millions of dollars each year in Taiwan. Antibiotic resistance among common respiratory bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Moraxella catarrhalis has become a major issue for public health. The common cold, acute pharyngotonsillitis, acute otitis media, acute sinusitis, acute bronchitis, influenza and acut
