PTSD, optimism, and life satisfaction during early SUD treatment among native Hawaiian and Pacific islander patients.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and resilience change rapidly early in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. However, these processes have not been characterized among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) patients, despite disproportionate trauma exposure and treatment barriers. Examining how posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, optimism, and quality of life satisfaction fluctuate during early treatment may help improve care. This study investigated within- and between-person associations among PTSD, optimism, and life satisfaction over the first month of treatment. METHODS: From

Neuroprotective mechanism of Ribisin A on Aβ25-35-induced PC12 cell damage model.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) is a neurotoxic substance, and studies have found that its excessive deposition in the brain, forming senile plaques, is a major pathological feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In previous studies, Ribisin A, a benzofuran compound, was purified from Phellinus ribis and found to have neuroprotective effects. This study aims to elucidate the neuroprotective mechanism of Ribisin A in an Aβ25-35-damaged PC12 cell model. This study established an in vitro AD model using PC12 cells damaged by Aβ25-35. We applied methyl tetrazolium (MTT), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit

Menstrual cyclicity of cannabis use: a longitudinal study using phase-aligned cycle time scaling (PACTS).

BACKGROUND: Despite rising rates of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) among females, research on female-specific implicated factors remains limited. Emerging evidence suggests that substance use behavior may fluctuate across the menstrual cycle, particularly among individuals with premenstrual disorders (PMDs). However, findings for cannabis use are limited and inconsistent. The present study aimed to investigate menstrual cyclicity of cannabis use likelihood and quantity, and potential implicated factors. METHODS: Naturally cycling individuals with diagnosed or suspected PMDs were

Effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on cognitive functioning and the expression of APP and BDNF in the hippocampus of rats with streptozotocin -induced Alzheimer-like disease.

We aimed to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of the active substance of green tea, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), on behavioral phenotypes and markers of neurogenesis in an Alzheimer disease (AD) rat model. The groups included sham, AD, and three AD groups receiving orally EGCG with different doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg. The AD model was induced by intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of streptozocin (STZ) at a dose of 3 mg/kg. Spatial learning and memory were evaluated in the Morris water maze (MWM) test. Real-time PCR assay was used for evaluating the expression of bet

A genetic exploration of the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder and cardiovascular diseases.

Experiencing a traumatic event may lead to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including symptoms such as flashbacks and hyperarousal. Individuals suffering from PTSD are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but it is unclear why. This study assesses shared genetic liability and potential causal pathways between PTSD and CVD. We leveraged summary-level data of genome-wide association studies (PTSD: N = 1,222,882; atrial fibrillation (AF): N = 482,409; coronary artery disease (CAD): N = 1,165,690; hypertension (HT): N = 458,554; heart failure (HF): N = 977,323). Association of Discharge Against Medical Advice with Surgical Outcomes and Healthcare Costs.

BACKGROUND: Patients who leave the hospital prematurely often remain in a compromised clinical state, which can increase the risk of complications. Discharge against medical advice (DAMA) has been associated with increased morbidity, fragmented care, and higher healthcare costs, but its impact on major surgical populations remains understudied. We sought to evaluate trends, risk factors, and postoperative outcomes among surgical patients who were DAMA. STUDY DESIGN: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (2016 to 2020) was used to identify adult patients (18 years or older) undergoing major ope

Effects of Tesamorelin on Neurocognitive Impairment in Persons With HIV and Abdominal Obesity.

BACKGROUND: In people with HIV who are virally suppressed with antiretroviral therapy, abdominal obesity (AO) is linked to neurocognitive impairment (NCI), potentially due to visceral adiposity, inflammation, and reduced insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Tesamorelin, a growth hormone-releasing hormone, reduces AO and increases IGF-1, suggesting that it might mitigate NCI in people with HIV and viral suppression. METHODS: This 6-month phase 2 randomized open-label clinical trial compared tesamorelin vs standard of care (SOC) for NCI in people with HIV who were virally suppressed and abdomi

Examining the association between psychological resilience and chronic versus discrete stressors among individuals who use opioids in Baltimore, Maryland.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological resilience has emerged as a key construct of interest in the study of substance use. However, very few studies have examined resilience among individuals who are actively using drugs. Furthermore, many studies of psychological resilience have focused on individual-level factors. This study addresses the call for a more 'ecological' approach to the study of resilience by exploring how socio-structural vulnerabilities may shape individuals' assessment of their own ability to cope. METHODS: The Peer Harm Reduction of Maryland Outreach Tiered Evaluation study conducted

Immediate oral feeding after free-flap reconstruction of the oral cavity.

AIM: There remains no consensus on the definition or value of early oral feeding after head and neck surgery. The main objective of this study was to determine how immediate oral feeding (IOF) with soft diet within 2 days following free-flap reconstruction of the oral cavity affected severe post-operative morbidity within 30 days and length of hospital stay (LoS). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in 2021-2023 in our tertiary hospital center. The associations between severe post-operative morbidity and LoS with the independent variable of IOF were analyzed by multivariate

Abuse of tapentadol compared to other atypical opioids among individuals entering treatment for opioid use disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Tapentadol is an atypical opioid analgesic thought to have dual mechanisms of action: µ-receptor agonism and inhibition of norepinephrine reuptake. Unlike other atypical opioids, tapentadol is a schedule II-controlled substance. We compared the prevalence of abuse (use to get high) of tapentadol to other atypical opioids used to treat pain (buprenor-phine and tramadol). DESIGN: An observational, serial cross-sectional study. SETTING: Individuals enrolling in treatment programs for opioid use disorder in 2019. Each completed a self-administered, paper questionnaire assessing prescr

Differences in Demographic, Risk, and Protective Factors in a Clinical Sample of Children who Experienced Sexual Abuse Only vs. Poly-victimization.

Children exposed to child sexual abuse (CSA) vary considerably with regards to their presenting concerns and treatment needs. One factor creating heterogeneity amongst children experiencing CSA is their history of experiencing other victimizations (i.e., poly-victimized or not). However, little is known about risk factors for poly-victimization as well as differences in protective factors among these two groups. Additionally, there is currently limited understanding of whether poly-victimization is associated with greater trauma symptoms in children exposed to CSA and being seen for trauma tre

The Preimplantation Psychosocial Evaluation and Prediction of Clinical Outcomes During Mechanical Circulatory Support: What Information Is Most Prognostic?

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial evaluations are required for long-term mechanical circulatory support (MCS) candidates, no matter whether MCS will be destination therapy (DT) or a bridge to heart transplantation. Although guidelines specify psychosocial contraindications to MCS, there is no comprehensive examination of which psychosocial evaluation domains are most prognostic for clinical outcomes. We evaluated whether overall psychosocial risk, determined across all psychosocial domains, predicted outcomes, and which specific domains appeared responsible for any effects. METHODS: A single-site retr
