Geometric accuracy of an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene canine tibia model fabricated using fused deposition modelling and the effects of hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilisation.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques have been used to produce anatomical models and surgical guiding instruments in orthopaedic surgery. The geometric accuracy of the 3D printed replica may affect surgical planning. This study assessed the geometric accuracy of an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) canine tibia model printed using fused deposition modelling (FDM) and evaluated its morphological change after hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) gas plasma sterilisation. The tibias of six canine cadavers underwent computed tomography for 3D reconstruction. Tibia models were fabricated

Alexis St. Martin Gastropexy: A Novel Technique for Gastropexy During Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Tube Placement.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a preferred method of long-term enteral nutritional support. Despite its ease of placement, it has a 4% major complication rate, requiring surgical intervention or hospitalization. Early PEG tube dislodgment can cause peritonitis, requiring emergent laparotomy at significant morbidity and cost. T-fasteners have been used as an adjunct gastropexy, but nearly one third migrate into the abdominal wall within the first 2 weeks. We describe a low-cost, minimally invasive technique using widely available surgical instruments to appose the gast

Effect of laparoscopy by single-port endoscopic access in benign adnexal surgery: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery has become the preferred surgical approach due to a reduction in postoperative pain, better recovery, shorter hospitalization, and improved esthetic outcomes. Laparoscopic surgery with single-port laparoscopy (SPL) is a laparoscopic surgery technique that is based on making a single parietal incision using a single trocar specifically designed to allow introduction of several instruments. The level of evidence regarding the advantages of SPL in terms of postoperative pain has remained low despite several randomized studies. Adult patients exhibiting a surgical

Implementation of a semiautomatic method to design patient-specific instruments for corrective osteotomy of the radius.

PURPOSE: 3D-printed patient-specific instruments (PSIs), such as surgical guides and implants, show great promise for accurate navigation in surgical correction of post-traumatic deformities of the distal radius. However, existing costs of computer-aided design and manufacturing process prevent everyday surgical use. In this paper, we propose an innovative semiautomatic methodology to streamline the PSIs design. METHODS: The new method was implemented as an extension of our existing 3D planning software. It facilitates the design of a regular and smooth implant and a companion guide starting

Robot-assisted hepatectomy and complete excision of the extrahepatic bile duct for type IV-A choledochal cysts.

BACKGROUND: Complete removal of the dilated biliary tree is regarded as inevitable in choledochal cysts due to its malignant potential. However, technical difficulty and the high risk of postoperative complications as well as the various presentations of the disease make the surgical options for type IV-A cysts challenging and controversial. We report the first case of a type IV-A choledochal cyst treated using a robot-assisted approach. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 41-year-old healthy female was admitted with intrahepatic and extrahepatic cysts incidentally found on routine checkup. Preoperative i

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography-related perforations: Diagnosis and management.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has become an important therapeutic modality for biliary and pancreatic disorders. Perforation is one of the most feared complications of ERCP and endoscopic sphincterotomy. A MEDLINE search was performed from 2000-2014 using the keywords "perforation", "ERCP" and "endoscopic sphincterotomy". All articles including more than nine cases were reviewed. The incidence of ERCP-related perforations was low (0.39%, 95%CI: 0.34-0.69) with an associated mortality of 7.8% (95%CI: 3.80-13.07). Endoscopic sphincterotomy was responsible for 41% of perfo

Interventional MR-guided excisional biopsy of breast lesions.

Interventional MR (IMR) machines have produced unique opportunities for image-guided surgery. The open configuration design and fast pulse sequences allow intraoperative scanning to monitor procedures. This study was undertaken to assess the potential use of IMR for image-guided surgery. Benign breast lesion excision was chosen as an uncomplicated surgical model. Ten female patients with known benign tumors underwent excision biopsy under general anesthesia in a Signa SP10 .5-T IMR machine (General Electric Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI). Lesions were localized with precontrast and postcontra

Robotic adrenalectomy: a comprehensive review of perioperative outcomes, comparative efficacy, and technological advancements.

The adrenal glands are small but vital endocrine organs responsible for hormone production, which is essential for stress response, fluid balance, and blood pressure regulation. Adrenalectomy, the surgical removal of one or both adrenal glands, is indicated in various benign and malignant conditions such as pheochromocytomas, aldosterone-producing adenomas, and adrenocortical carcinoma. Historically performed via open surgery, adrenalectomy has evolved significantly with the introduction of laparoscopic adrenalectomy in the 1990s and more recently, robotic adrenalectomy. Robotic adrenalectomy

Robot-assisted thoracoscopic resection of a posterior mediastinal tumor with preserving the artery of Adamkiewicz.

BACKGROUND: The artery of Adamkiewicz (AKA) provides the major blood supply to the lower two-thirds of the spinal cord. As the AKA typically arises from a left posterior intercostal artery at the levels between 9 and 12th thoracic vertebrae, injury of the AKA during thoracic surgery such as resection of a lower paravertebral tumor may cause serious neurological complications. Robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) has several advantages over video-assisted thoracic surgery including three-dimensional and high-definition view with high image magnification and reduced restriction in movement of

Higher Surgery and Recovery Room Air Pressures Associated with Reduced Surgical Site Infection Risk.

BACKGROUND: Incisional surgical site infections (SSIs) following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) prolong hospital stays, elevate healthcare costs and increase likelihood of further complications. High air pressure deactivates bacteria and is utilized for commercial food preservation, assuring microbiologically safe pharmaceuticals and sanitizing instruments. However, research on utilizing air pressure deactivation thresholds in surgical and postoperative rooms to reduce rates of SSIs is lacking. METHODS: A case-control study of 801 CABG patients, 128 SSI cases and 673 controls was cond
