Stress and Skin: An Overview of Mind Body Therapies as a Treatment Strategy in Dermatology.

Stress has multiple and wide-ranging physiologic and clinical impacts on skin disease. This has led to an interest in mind body therapies as potential adjunct treatments for skin disease. The stress response results in the activation of the endocrine, neurologic, and immune systems, with a resulting cascade of impacts, that are both systemic and cutaneous. The 2 main arms of the stress response are the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The resultant release of cortisol, catecholamines, and neuropeptides has multiple effects. Clinically, these have been sho

Differential Diagnosis of an Unusual Snakebite Presentation in Benin: Dry Bite or Envenomation?

A 20-year-old man presented to a rural hospital in Bembéréké, northern Benin, after a witnessed bite from a small, dark snake to his left foot that occurred 3 hours earlier. The description of the snake was consistent with several neurotoxic elapids known to inhabit the area in addition to various species from at least 10 different genera of non-front-fanged colubroid (NFFC) venomous snakes. The presentation was consistent with the early signs of a neurotoxic snakebite as well as a sympathetic nervous system stress response. Diagnosis was further complicated by the presence of a makeshift tour

Involvement of Cytokines in the Pathogenesis of Salt and Water Imbalance in Congestive Heart Failure.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) has become a major medical problem in the western world with high morbidity and mortality rates. CHF adversely affects several systems, mainly the kidneys and the lungs. While the involvement of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and the sympathetic nervous system in the progression of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and renal dysfunction in experimental and clinical CHF is well established, the importance of pro-inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of this clinical setting is still evolving. In this context, CHF is associated with overexpression of pro-in

Current Treatment Options for CHF Management: Focus on the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System.

Heart failure (HF) is highly prevalent in our society and its incidence is increasing in concert with the growing aged population. Experimental and clinical studies have consistently shown that HF is ameliorated by inhibition of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Acknowledging that heightened activation of the RAAS contributes significantly to HF progression has led to the development of pharmacologic antagonists of RAAS components that have greatly improved both symptoms and prognosis of patients suffering from this syndrome. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors repres

Hypotension, subarachnoid block and the elderly patient.

This article reviews the current literature on the management of hypotension during subarachnoid block in the elderly. Hypotension results from blockade of the sympathetic nervous system, which causes decreases in both systemic vascular resistance and cardiac output. Abolition of normal cardiovascular reflexes is also important and may explain unexpected cardiac arrests during subarachnoid block. Untreated block in the elderly results in decreases in systolic arterial pressure, systemic vascular resistance and central venous pressure. Cardiac output appears not to decrease as has been previous

Myocardial beta-adrenoceptors in pacing-induced heart failure: regulation by enalapril?

In heart failure, both the sympathetic nervous system and the renin angiotensin system play important pathophysiological roles, and the two systems may interact with each other, e.g., angiotensin II facilitating noradrenaline release. An abnormality in beta-adrenoceptor density (i.e., a decrease) occurs in clinical and pacing-induced heart failure. This observation together with the therapeutic effectiveness of converting-enzyme inhibitors in the management of patients with heart failure led to the current investigation. The aim was to explore the impact of chronic enalapril treatment on the s

Salivary Stress Biomarkers (Chromogranin A and Secretory IgA): Associations with Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms in Healthcare Professionals.

Background/Objectives: Shift-working healthcare professionals are exposed to high psychophysiological demands associated with occupational stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Salivary chromogranin A (sCgA) and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) are non-invasive biomarkers reflecting sympathetic nervous system activation and mucosal immune function, respectively, and are increasingly used to assess biological stress responses. This study examined changes in these biomarkers and their associations with anxiety and depression. Methods: This cross-sectional comparative observational study was

Early-life sodium restriction programs autonomic dysfunction and salt sensitivity in male C57BL/6J mice.

Preterm birth increases the risk of cardiometabolic disease in adulthood. Infants born during the second trimester of pregnancy, a critical period of hypothalamic development, are at risk of sodium (Na) depletion due to renal immaturity and large urine Na losses. We previously demonstrated in male mice that Na restriction during the equivalent mouse hypothalamic development period [postnatal day (PD)21-PD42] programs long-term changes in energy balance via increased thermogenic sympathetic nervous activity. We therefore hypothesized that early-life Na restriction programs changes in cardiovasc

Autonomic regulation in athletic horses repetitively participating in two novice jumping classes on consecutive days.

INTRODUCTION: Animal welfare is of great concern in equestrian sports and has been evaluated in athletic horses competing at different levels. However, the impact of consecutive days of jumping competition and the extent of resultant stress responses remains unclear. To address this point, the present study compared the changes in stress response via heart rate variability (HRV) in horses participating in two national jumping events on consecutive days. METHODS: The study involved six experienced horses equipped with heart rate monitoring devices. HRV variables were measured before, during, a

Direct and indirect effects of adiposity on markers of autonomic nervous system activity in older adults.

Several cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (e.g., hypertension, poor glycemic control) can affect and be affected by autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Since excess adiposity can influence CVD development through its effect on hypertension and diabetes mellitus, it is important to determine how adiposity and altered ANS activity are related. The present study employed structural equation modeling to investigate the relation between adiposity and ANS activity both directly and indirectly through biological variables typically associated with glycemic impairment and cardiac stress i

Activation AMPK in Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus Improves Renovascular Hypertension Through ERK1/2-NF-κB Pathway.

Hypertension is a globally prevalent disease, but the pathogenesis remains largely unclear. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a nutrition-sensitive signal of cellular energy metabolism, which has a certain influence on the development of hypertension. Previously, we found a down-regulation of the phosphorylated (p-) form of AMPK, and the up-regulation of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1-R) and that of p-ERK1/2 in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of hypertensive rats. However, the exact mechanism underlying the relationship between AMPK and AT1-R in the PVN during hype

Clenbuterol, a Selective β2-Adrenergic Receptor Agonist, Inhibits or Limits Post-Stroke Pneumonia, but Increases Infarct Volume in MCAO Mice.

BACKGROUND: Large ischemic stroke provokes an inflammatory response, promoting the release of norepinephrine (NE) by intensifying the sympathetic nervous system. This augmented sympathetic outflow was deemed to act on β2-adrenergic receptors (β2-ARs) expressed by immune cells, rendering organisms to post-stroke infections, like pneumonia. To clarify this issue, we introduced selective β2-ARs agonist clenbuterol (CLEN) to stroke mice to investigate how β2-adrenergic signaling augmentation after stroke affects immune response and post-stroke outcomes, including central and peripheral. METHODS:

Objective Improvements in Peripheral Arterial Disease from Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is important in the regulation of perfusion. Dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) modulates sympathetic tone and is approved to treat complex regional pain syndrome, a disorder related to SNS dysfunction. We herein present 3 cases of DRG-S therapy to improve blood flow and symptoms of ischemia in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). METHODS: Patient 1 is a 44-year-old female with dry gangrene of the third and fourth digits of her right hand due to Raynaud's syndrome who was scheduled for amputation of the affected digits. DRG-S leads were pla

Heart rate variability and pulmonary dysfunction in rats subjected to hemorrhagic shock.

BACKGROUND: The activity of autonomic nervous system and its association with organ damage have not been entirely elucidated in hemorrhagic shock. The aim of this study was to investigate heart rate variability (HRV) and pulmonary gas exchange in hemorrhagic shock during unilateral subdiaphragmatic vagotomy. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into groups of Sham, vagotomized (Vag), hemorrhagic shock (HS) and Vag + HS. HS was induced in conscious animals by blood withdrawal until reaching to mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) of 40 ± 5 mmHg. Then, it was allowed to MAP re

The differences in brain stem transcriptional profiling in hypertensive ISIAH and normotensive WAG rats.

BACKGROUND: The development of essential hypertension is associated with a wide range of mechanisms. The brain stem neurons are essential for the homeostatic regulation of arterial pressure as they control baroreflex and sympathetic nerve activity. The ISIAH (Inherited Stress Induced Arterial Hypertension) rats reproduce the human stress-sensitive hypertensive disease with predominant activation of the neuroendocrine hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and sympathetic adrenal axes. RNA-Seq analysis of the brain stems from the hypertensive ISIAH and normotensive control WAG (Wistar Albino Glaxo) rat

Evidence for bidirectional and trans-synaptic parasympathetic and sympathetic propagation of alpha-synuclein in rats.

The conversion of endogenous alpha-synuclein (asyn) to pathological asyn-enriched aggregates is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). These inclusions can be detected in the central and enteric nervous system (ENS). Moreover, gastrointestinal symptoms can appear up to 20 years before the diagnosis of PD. The dual-hit hypothesis posits that pathological asyn aggregation starts in the ENS, and retrogradely spreads to the brain. In this study, we tested this hypothesis by directly injecting preformed asyn fibrils into the duodenum wall of wild-type rats and transgenic rats with excess levels of

Effects of Chronic Pelvic Pain on Heart Rate Variability in Women.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and myofascial pelvic pain are frequently comorbid chronic pelvic pain disorders. Differences in bladder function between interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and myofascial pelvic pain suggest that efferent autonomic function may differentiate these syndromes. Heart rate variability, defined as the difference in duration of successive heartbeats, serves as an index of autonomic function by measuring its ability to modify heart rate in response to neurophysiological changes. High frequency heart rate variability was used as a reflecti

Spinal cord injury level and the circulating cytokine response to strenuous exercise.

PURPOSE: A complete spinal cord injury (SCI) above the sixth thoracic vertebra (T6) results in the loss of sympathetic innervation of the adrenal medulla. This study examined the effect of a complete SCI above and below T6 on plasma concentrations of epinephrine, circulating interleukin 6 (IL-6) and other inflammatory cytokines in response to acute strenuous exercise. METHODS: Twenty-six elite male wheelchair athletes (8 = C6-C7 tetraplegic [TETRA], 10 = T6-L1 paraplegic [PARA], and 8 = non-spinal-cord-injured controls [NON-SCI]) performed a submaximal exercise test followed by a graded exerc

Insulin versus glucagon crosstalk: central plus peripheral mechanisms.

Plasma glucose level depends on the peripheral intra-islet crosstalk between A cells (glucagon) + B-cells (insulin) and D-cells (somatostatin). Gastrointestinal hormones (secretin, CCK-PZ, gastrin, and serotonin) modulate the glucose- and amino acids-induced secretions of insulin and glucagon, respectively. Serotonin (5-HT) arose from the enterochromaffin cells during postprandial periods excites basal but inhibits excited B-cells. Serotonin excites adrenal glands that release adrenaline (Ad) + dopamine (DA). The former is positively correlated with hyperglycemia, whereas DA antagonizes this e

Arginine vasopressin enhances sympathetic constriction through the V1 vasopressin receptor in human saphenous vein.

BACKGROUND: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) not only acts directly on blood vessels through V1 receptor stimulation but also may modulate adrenergic-mediated responses in animal experiments in vivo and in vitro. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether AVP can contribute to an abnormal adrenergic constrictor response of human saphenous veins. METHODS AND RESULTS: Saphenous vein rings were obtained from 32 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. The vein rings were suspended in organ bath chambers for isometric recording of tension. AVP (3x10[-9] mol/L) enhanced the contr
