From natural theology to the extended synthesis: Historical milestones and conceptual expansions in evolutionary biology.

This article explores the historical development of evolutionary biology-from Natural Theology to the Modern Synthesis (MS)-and the ongoing debate around the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES). Over the past 2,500 years, evolutionary thinking has emerged from the interplay between empirical discoveries and dominant philosophical paradigms. Beginning with Aristotle and Saint Augustine, we trace how Darwin and Wallace introduced a scientific framework grounded in natural mechanisms. In the early 20th century, the MS unified Mendelian genetics and Darwinian selection, forming a gene-centered m

Nonenergy Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS): Assessing Durability of Nongaseous Carbon Products Across Terrestrial Storage Fates.

Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage, or BiCRS, pathways use plants or algae that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and store it underground or in long-lived products. While some BiCRS approaches generate an energy product, all BiCRS approaches generate a carbon product. A new subset of BiCRS approaches focus on the storage of these raw or converted carbon products for generation of carbon credits. However, the durability of these approaches is highly variable as carbon products vary widely in their "form" and the conditions of their "fate." We organize our thinkin

Subjective cognitive decline prevalence, impacts, and discussions with healthcare professionals among middle-aged and older women veterans and non-veterans, 2021-2022.

OBJECTIVES: Veterans may be at higher risk of cognitive decline due to military-related risk factors (e.g. traumatic brain injury). We compared the prevalence and impacts of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) among veteran and non-veteran women. METHOD: Using data from the 2021-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Cognitive Decline module in 29 jurisdictions, women ≥45 years reporting increased memory problems or confusion over the past year were classified as having SCD. We calculated weighted estimates among 1,905 women veterans (n = 268 with SCD) and 66,880 women non-veterans (n

Predicting emergency mortality risk in traumatic brain injury: comparative analysis of machine learning and large language model GPT-5.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly important in predicting outcomes of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Traditional machine learning (ML) models, such as support vector machines (SVMs), have shown high accuracy, whereas the potential of large language models (LLMs) in structured clinical prediction remains underexplored. PURPOSE: This study compared the predictive performance of ML and LLM approaches (ChatGPT-5 with Thinking response mode) using the same TBI dataset and evaluated the impact of prompting strategies and threshold calibration on model reliability and c

Network models of symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Network modeling of post-concussion symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has emerged as a promising tool for understanding how cognitive, emotional, and somatic symptoms co-occur and interact. However, the generalizability of networks developed in individual studies remains unclear. This study aimed to develop the first-ever meta-analytic pooled between-persons network structure of post-concussion symptoms and systematically examine the between-study heterogeneity of these symptom networks. METHODS: Using the Meta-Analytic Gaussian Network Aggregation (MAGNA) frame

Acceptability, Feasibility, and Preliminary Efficacy of the Substance Use and Health Risk Intervention (SUHRI) for Youth on Probation.

Youth involved in the juvenile justice system are a vulnerable population that often engage in illegal and destructive behaviors, including substance use, crime, and risky sex practices. Brief, interactive interventions that engage at-risk youth in prosocial activities and are designed to improve decision making around high-risk behaviors are needed. The current study tested the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of a technology-based intervention for risky behavior among youth on probation. The Substance Use and Health Risk Intervention (SUHRI) is a four-session protocol usi

Research into resistance training response heterogeneity: a summary of the 2025 conference at the University of Jyväskylä.

The Inter-Individual Variation in Resistance Training Response Conference was hosted at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland November 19-21, 2025. This paper summarizes key themes that emerged across lectures and discussions. First, resistance training induces multidimensional adaptations at the tissue, muscle fiber, and ultrastructural levels, including radial muscle fiber hypertrophy through increased myofibril number, longitudinal growth through sarcomere addition throughout the length (not ends) of muscle fibers, and metabolic adaptations that emulate other models of rapid cell growth. Accelerating scientific discovery with Co-Scientist.

Scientific discovery is driven by scientists generating novel hypotheses for complex problems that undergo rigorous experimental validation. To augment this process, we introduce Co-Scientist, a multi-agent AI system built on Gemini for structured scientific thinking and hypothesis generation. Co-Scientist aims to help scientists discover new original knowledge. Conditioned on their research objectives and prior scientific evidence, it formulates demonstrably novel research hypotheses for experimental verification. The system's design involves agents continuously generating, critiquing and ref

Acute pancreatitis: new insights.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute pancreatitis is an increasingly common cause of hospitalization in children, yet management strategies have historically been extrapolated from adult practice. Over the past 12-18 months, emerging evidence has challenged long-standing approaches to early care and reframed pediatric pancreatitis as a marker of underlying susceptibility. This review is prompt in synthesizing recent insights that are reshaping contemporary pediatric practice. RECENT FINDINGS: Current literature supports a change in thinking away from aggressive, fixed-rate fluid resuscitation toward mode

Rumination as a Mediator Between Intolerance of Uncertainty and Online Health Anxiety, Moderated by Medical History.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the psychological mechanisms underlying cyberchondria by testing whether rumination mediates the association between intolerance of uncertainty and cyberchondria and whether this indirect effect is moderated by prior medical experiences and perceived access to healthcare. METHODS AND MEASURES: A cross-sectional design was employed with a non-clinical sample of 96 Romanian adults. Participants completed validated self-report measures of intolerance of uncertainty (IUS-12), rumination (Ruminative Responses Scale), and cyberchondria (Cyberchondria Severity Scale). Addition

Do positive aspects of caregiving lessen burden and depression, or the other way round? A mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVES: Positive aspects of caregiving (PAC) are assumed to protect against caregiver suffering, but evidence is lacking. Two studies examined this assumption through testing the reciprocal causality between PAC and burden/depression, and exploring the mechanisms linking these constructs. METHODS: MethodsIn Study One, 99 dementia caregivers were interviewed six months apart. In Study Two, 45 caregivers provided 620 diaries across eight weeks. RESULTS: In Study One, baseline burden predicted increased depressive symptoms, whereas baseline depressive symptoms predicted less PAC. Although b

Psychological aspects of sexuality in adults with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunctions in individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have been previously reported. However, most of these results refer to physical and behavioral measures. Psychological aspects have not been previously researched. METHOD: In the present study, we utilized an online version of the "Multidimensional Sexuality Questionnaire" (MSQ) in a sample of individuals with SAD (n = 242, 40.70 ± 13.40 years, 58.7% female). We hypothesized greater difficulties for SAD individuals compared to controls without SAD through the influence of fear and avoidance symptoms. RESULTS: B

How the Gender Dimension of One Health Helps Combat Outbreaks of Emerging and Reemerging Zoonotic Diseases: Case Studies.

When outbreaks of emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases are discussed, little attention is paid to differential gender impacts, or to gender involvement and roles in different settings during the outbreak. Gender roles shape how individuals' interactions with animals, wildlife, other people and the environment, which influences exposure to zoonotic pathogens. For example, in some rural communities, men may face risks of exposure to emerging pathogens during hunting whilst women who primarily take care of domestic animals may face prolonged exposure to other zoonotic diseases. In some setti

Mapping Interpersonal Hate: A Network and Mediation Analysis of Anger, Rumination, and Grudge.

Hate, an intense negative emotion, can disrupt and damage interpersonal relationships following transgressions. Despite its destructive potential, the psychological mechanism that fuels hate remains poorly understood. Anger has been identified as a primary component of hate, yet anger and hate differ in their appraisal tendencies and motivational goals. This raises a critical question: how does anger contribute to the emergence of hate? To address this, the present study examined the interplay among anger, anger rumination, grudge, and hate. A total of 740 participants completed self-report me

From one-size-fits-all to context-specific: the 10-day observation rule-a need for change.

WHO's 'Zero by 30' strategic plan relies on post-exposure prophylaxis guidelines designed for high-resource settings. This policy brief argues that the implementation gap of the 10-day observation rule in high-burden countries stems from fundamental infeasibility, exposing two paradigm defects in WHO guideline development: one-size-fits-all thinking and insufficient attention to implementation science. When the public misinterprets the 10-day rule as "wait and see" rather than "initiate PEP immediately while observing the animal," three biological facts render this misinterpretation fatal: sym

A Home Between Environmental Changes and Climatic Anxiety.

It is becoming harder to feel at home. As wildfires, floods, drought, and heat become recurrent rather than exceptional, and as everyday life fills with weather alerts, evacuation warnings, and preparedness drills, many people experience a particular kind of distress: the pain of remaining in a place that is still physically present but no longer feels safe, familiar, or trustworthy. This paper examines that experience through the concept of solastalgia-homesickness felt while still at home-and argues that it is not a private mood or a distortion of thinking, but a meaningful disturbance in th

Protecting Patient Information in Healthcare.

This paper considers the connection between fairness and unfairness from a theoretical standpoint, highlighting the importance of critically evaluating the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on patients' perception of healthcare justice. The arguments and analysis are framed within the context of Hannah Arendt's concept of the 'banality of evil' and Miranda Fricker's concept of 'epistemic injustice'. The article suggests that the greatest threat to fairness and transparency when it comes to AI may not be people deliberately trying to cause harm, but rather a widespread cult
